Seems like the Arenado trade get more unlikely by the day.

I know many on this board are against it, but I thought it would make us better. I'm hoping for one final move to beef up the squad heading into the year.

The Brendan Rodgers acquisition was a nice little surprise that could work out really well.

I'd be okay with the trade if a lot of his salary gets eaten by the cardinals and they take Montero

It makes us better this year and likely next year
I think this is the rub. Cards aren't willing to do this.

Looks like the cardinals are on the hook for 27M this year, 22M next year and then 15M in 2027.

I'd hope they take montero and a prospect which would offset 11M for us and then maybe the cardinals cover another 5M this upcoming season.

That would mean we pay Arenado 11M this year. I feel like that would be a great deal

Agreed. I hope he would not be an everyday player, though. Espada should have an easy time rotating and resting guys with Walker, Paredes, Altuve, Dubon, maybe Rodgers, I assume Singleton, and another IF like Arenado.

That brings up a question. What would the roster look like if Dana did get Arenado? Would Rodgers or Singleton have a spot?

Roster locks- position players (10 at present):
  • Yainer Diaz
  • Victor Caratini
  • Christian Walker
  • Jose Altuve
  • Jeremy Peña
  • Isaac Paredes
  • Yordan Alvarez
  • Chas McCormick
  • Jake Meyers
  • Mauricio Dubn

Bench/platoon options (likely only 3 spots available):
  • Ben Gamel
  • Zach Dezenzo
  • Jon Singleton
  • Brandon Rodgers

Roster locks- starters (5)
  • Framber Valdez
  • Hunter Brown
  • Ronel Blanco
  • Spencer Arrighetti
  • Hayden Wesneski

Roster locks- relievers (3):
  • Josh Hader
  • Bryan Abreu
  • Tayler Scott

Reliever options, and some may be locks (5):
  • Bryan King
  • Kaleb Ort (discomfort)
  • Forrest Whitley
  • Shawn Dubin
  • Rafael Montero

Bonus... pitching returnees at some point, hopefully (locks, if they do):
  • LMJ (starter)
  • Garcia (either)
  • Javier (assume starter)
  • France (may not be a lock)

Wesneski could move to the pen, I guess, and Blanco too if enough starters come back and pitch effectively. That would make the pen stout, IMO.

Anyway, back to Arenado. Not many spots available for another infielder. Who would back up Walker if not Singleton... Diaz, Dezenzo, or Dubon?
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Based on what?

From what I've gathered it's no more likely or unlikely.

I made it to the second batter of spring training before saying something bad about Cintron.

Quote:

In December, the Cardinals were willing to send $15-20 million to the Astros as part of the deal to help pay down Arenado's salary, sources said. The eight-time All-Star is set to earn $74 million over the next three years, though the Rockies are on the hook for $10 million as part of their 2021 trade with the Cardinals, while $12 million of the deal is deferred, bringing the present-day value of what he is owed to roughly $60 million. The money the Cardinals were willing to include would have brought the Astros' commitment down to roughly $40-45 million over three years.

So they can take Montero plus pay another 4-9 M over the next few seasons.

I wonder who we'd give up in this deal.

"Washed" in this case is a relative term.

Offensively he should be above avg. defensively he should be well above avg. is that worth 3/74? Hell no! But if he costs us more like 3/45 (present day value plus Cards taking Montero & paying it down a little) then it's perfectly fine.

If it means we get Arenado ABs over Dubon ABs then it's a big win. It also helps the INF D which means Framber, Brown, & McCullers all got better.

I was against it when it meant we don't get Paredes or Walker. But we got them. This is gravy on top of everything.

agreed. The folks in thread have had a head start thinking through this potential addition due to 2015.

The rest of the media and fanbase had no clue this could still happen.

That gives you a core of Altuve, Yordan, Pena, Yainer, Arenado, Walker and Paredes to work around for three years. Most of the pitching is locked up as well for that time frame, except for Framber. That's a really competitive core for three years before new blood like Smith and Matthews take over.

Edit to add Yainer
