Bregman could take a non deferred contract, stick it in a money market fund, and get 220M+ based on a 170M contract over the same duration as a deferred contract if you want to spin it that way

You have to compare apples to apples

Thats crappy and I've heard GMs on the radio say that they hate that. Opt out after 1 year and you basically have to try and resign a player who is a FA again. And it's going to cost you more money to do it.
The Red Sox have a stud prospect who is likely a 2B in the bigs. If Devers is staying at 3B they may be content to let Alex walk after one year. The last few offseasons certainly tell me they aren't keen on long term deals for guys past 30. They already got burned on Story.

I don't think anybody is rooting against him, but maybe it is just battered astro syndrome. We have gotten our hopes up too many times for guys coming back from injury, only to wind up disappointed.
