Yeah it seems petty at this point. Just rubs me the wrong way that after seeing his market value and not signing anywhere, he's still going to squabble over something like this when we give him the best number of years in the best place he wants to stay. It's "close enough" to where you don't turn this down twice. It's a business on both sides of course, but this is just dragging on way longer than it has to. Just strikes me as being excessively greedy.

Astros should give Bregman a deadline this week. Take it or leave it, last and final offer. I don't think we are in any pressure situation to sign Bregman and Dana/Crane should not think we are either.

If I'm being honest, while Bregman coming back improves the team, I think it hurts long-term and I think there's cheaper options this year that can perhaps improve our club in more positions of need for far cheaper and with far less years attached.

We can also roll into the trade deadline with more financial flexibility to make a splash if necessary.

That's not how any salary negotiation works. Can you imagine applying and interviewing for a job, receiving an offer, countering the offer, and then being told because you countered, the next offer has just gone down from the original?

I mean, sure, if the company had already taken drastic and irreversible steps to replace you between the time of the original offer and the counter? Yes, I can forsee that as a very realistic possibility. Maybe that's just me.

If you decline the team's best offer and the team goes and hires somebody else to fill the position, absolutely, you have no right to expect the original offer to still be on the table. If nobody else Alex wants to play for is offering 5-6 years, then the Astros shouldn't be offering him that either. Make a fair offer for the market he has in front of him and if he leaves, then he didn't want to be here.
