Why would you want league average production at 3B & above at 1B instead of above league average production at 3B & 1B while saving money?

Singleton + Caratini or Dezenzo platoon >>> Arenado

I don't disagree in general. I am not wanting to shill for Arenado, but it can make sense in the context of saving some money IF you intend to use it elsewhere though.

Signing Bregman may limit who we can get in the OF.

I still say signing Bregman may be a good idea at roughly the current offer. I wouldn't extend to 7 unless he's willing to take lower AAV.

If Bregman wants 6/175, there needs to be a club option on those last 2 years. I wouldn't want to be tied to him for that much beyond 3-4 years. I really don't think he is worth that much period, but if it keeps us from bringing in Capt. Lou 2.0 to be our new 3B, I am for it.

I'd do that deal but no way in hell Breggy would accept club option last 2 years.

Candidly I'm surprised we are willing to go above the original 6/$156M. My main focus right now would be locking up either Teoscar or Santander at much more palatable rates and then working a Framber deal.

Arenado is a very good defender but we need power at the corners.

I feel like Bregman is in that movie, Jerry Maguire…Boras is Maguire, Bregman is Rod Tidwell.

True

And for the record I'm glad he nixed it. After looking at his numbers I think it would've been a bad idea.

Agreed.

I'm not even necessarily making the case that we should def retain Bregman. Just that if we're going to go in a diff direction, why would our answer be to commit 3 years to a guy who's 34 and on decline. Oh well.
I think because Crane gets enamored with a name and past production.

I think that's why he and Click never worked. Click didn't want to name chase and probably wanted more of the unknown, garbage heap type player.

Lunhow was literally the perfect blend of GM for Crane. An identifier or cheap, quality talent and willing to go for the big name when it's right.

Too bad Lunhow didn't have the stones to tell his guys to stop the cheating system.

Crane sounds like a successful Drayton

Glad to see common sense spreading
Quote:

"The Astros making a trade for Arenado makes about as much sense as if (Pauley) and I were to both leave our beautiful wives and go elope with inflatable Christmas blowups," said Creighton on Sports Open Line. "It's make no sense whatsoever and it's wild we're having this discussion."

Creighton says a trade for Arenado would go against everything the Astros "claim is their philosophy."

"Why do the Astros not want to pay Alex Bregman? Because they don't want to get stuck with the back three years of the contract where there's a lot of money and the production goes down," said Creighton. "

Creighton also cited the examples of the Astros letting Carlos Correa, George Springer, Dallas Keuchel, Gerrit Cole and Charlie Morton all walk to free agency over the last seven years as the Astros refusing to budge from their philosophy.

"What is Nolan Arenado? He's a guy on the back of that contract in the last three years with all that money and the declining production," said Creighton. "He literally in the part of the contract the Astros don't want in any of the guys they let go."

What is the going rate, monetarily, for 1 WAR? I think Farmer had a post a few pages back, but the only thing I found was years 2018-2022. Over that span the average was about $8.12 million per WAR.

Bregman was a 4 WAR player in '24. Is anyone going to give him 30+ million?

I still think the Arenado trade is different than being stuck with a guy making a ton of money in his waning years because we wouldn't be paying all of his salary. But if he continues to decline, year two and especially year three could be less than ideal, especially if he's blocking a prospect.

We do have a little recency bias having just gone through the Abreu fiasco, so I think everyone is a little gun shy on aging players right now. There will obviously be some decline, but not many fall off the cliff like Abreu.

I'd like to use that salary elsewhere, but if we were already going to pull the trigger on Arenado, assuming it was that close, is that an indication that our other options aren't promising?

It's not just the money though. It's the players going the other way in the trade too. I would much rather spend that money and/or use the players tha0t were going to be moved to fill other needs in other trade or free agent signingss.

He is showing the same power decline as Abreu did before he came here. He deserves to be lumped in that group. .

I know we're supposed to be giving all the new clubhouse heads a shot, but we just seem miles and miles away from what got us to our golden age.

Hope I'm proven wrong.

I don't know, the Tucker trade was very smart and the exact kind of trade I could see Luhnow approving of.

The Arenado talk seems risky and short sided though.

Brown did quite well last trade deadline.

Doesn't look like we are in the conversation with any of the big free agents and we are not exactly the type of roster that just needs to add role players anymore.

The deal would have involved "just a couple of C-grade prospects" is what I'm told.

The deal was agreed on but the trigger wasn't going to be pulled just yet.

Christian Walker has been the #1 target since September and still is.

The Astros have also spoken with Santander. I wouldn't call them the favorites by any means but they're in it. Bregman is still a possibility as well.

Right now the entire league is sort of at a stand still waiting for things to start moving.
