The White Sox season win total being 49.5 is absolutely hilarious
I've got a buddy middling high in the white sox operations organization, and rumor is that is furious about how the Sox are doing and is threatening once again to move the franchise, as he has a couple of times in the past.

The interesting thing is where he wants to move to; the areas he's been considering are Monterrey, Mexico (much lower than Mexico City, and also much closer to W.Texas, NM, and Southern AZ population centers. They're also considering a move between Austin and San Antonio, to hopefully pick up those two underserved population centers, and continue to attack the mexican beisbol fan.
Maybe this is what Bregman is holding out for. Hoping the White Sox up and move before the year and he can play in NM.

The Astros and other teams aren't waiting for Bregman to sign with them as much as they're waiting for him to sign anywhere so the other dominoes start to fall.

Example: If Bregman signs with the Yankees, that likely makes Walker much more available for Houston as NYY will likely no longer pursue. Right now Walker is waiting to see if the Yankees will raise their offer if Bregman doesn't sign there.

They can put a deadline on Alex to make a decision on if he wants to sign here if they want, but it wouldn't change anything as far as the rate that they're pursuing others. The whole league is waiting.

Someone has to blink and more dominoes will fall.

welp i guess we are just gunna look at the worlds most expensive domino line for a while, cause Boras will never be the first to cave! To a fault!

Boras is also Alonso's agent. Have to think some of the same teams are in on him so letting this linger forever has negative downstream impact on Scott.

Thoughts?
Kyle Tucker is going to see real fast what it means to play meaningless games in May.

At least he won't have to deal with absolutely choking in the playoffs.

Teams could make Bregman fairly irrelevant if they would just move on and don't play Boras' game. They need to use the trade deadline and Chapman/Montgomery as leverage.

Say, hey, we'll fill our needs without you, then when you sign a contract for much less than what you are being offered now, we'll just trade for you at the deadline.

Not going to work out like that most likely, but they at least have that leverage and need to use it to get these guys going.

Cubs
OK, well please note that part of my ongoing shtick is immediately ****ting on the teams of anyone who dares leave Houston as a free agent. The Cubs and whomever Bregman signs with will be lucky to win 10 games this year.

Other items to note when reading my posts, to keep you (the collective you, not you specifically) from being more annoyed by me than normal include the following.

1. I'm always going to blame Jeff Bagwell for messing things up in the front office, even if there is no proof he is.
2. I'm never going to admit that Mike Scott was a cheater.
3. I will adopt one "new stat" every 5 years as acceptable. And by "new" I mean things that have evolved since 2000. I'm currently deciding that I'm OK with OPS.
4. If I had the choice of no one in the world ever starving again or the Astros getting to Game 7 of the 1986 NLCS, I would take Game 7.
5. I will also say really ridiculous things about the Rangers in hopes of pissing off their lurking readers, especially that dumfuq that got me banned for a month last year, you know the one, hates girls?
6. I will tell the story every year about my Dad having no idea who Aaron Judge was during the 2017 ALCS and mocking Yankee fans for his ineptness.
7. Any reference to any 20th century player by anyone else triggers a switch in my hippocampus that causes me to look that guy up on B-R.com and start waxing poetic about his career.

Carry on

You left off your story about throwing out the first pitch…hating Servais, getting in a fight and being jailed and your obsession with the greatest sac fly hitter to ever play in Arlington

I'm not sure how to feel about this.

Sounds like the Cardinals were willing to pay down a good amount of the contract. That would've made a glove-first vet with offensive rebound potential more appealing

The aggressiveness towards acquiring Arenado as repeatedly reported by Chandler Rome seems to run counter to 2015's sources unless we just got an offer we loved or something.

Quote:

The Cardinals were willing to send $15-20 million to the Astros as part of the deal to help pay down Arenado's salary, sources said. The eight-time All-Star is set to earn $74 million over the next three years, though the Rockies are on the hook for $10 million as part of their 2021 trade with the Cardinals, while $12 million of the deal is deferred, bringing the present-day value of what he is owed to roughly $60 million. The money the Cardinals were willing to include would have brought the Astros' commitment down to roughly $40-45 million over three years.

I think Nolan knows he's in decline and doesn't want to deal with the pressure of replacing Alex and the constant comparisons. I hope he continues to feel that way and doesn't change his mind on blocking the trade

Nope. You have to figure for that amount of money off his contract, we were offering to give up a lot

Not sure how I feel about this.

On the one hand I'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze here but on the other I'm thinking, "fck him in the ear, does he think he's too good for us or what?"

This is a win!

Too much blue!

Long slow swing for aging star = DFA after wasting a few hundred PAs

What does he look like when the "luck" runs out?

He profiles more to a slightly better Dubon on offense than an impact hitter.

I think he wants to force himself to LA.

I know our resident insider has repeated that it's unlikely Alex resigns, but on the outside chance that it does happen, I hope it doesn't preclude us from making other trades / signings to still improve the team. Even if you have Alex at 3rd, the outfield needs to be addressed in a desperate way with a strong bat / defensive guy.

I was where you are back when he was first mentioned but then I took a closer look at his numbers.

This isn't just one outlier season of low production. His production has been in a steady decline for the past few years. HRs, RBIs, OPS all on a steady decline in the past 3-4 years.

I know awards are the best barometer for success but it's telling that he won a GG in every season since 2013 until 23 and 24.

There's a reason they wanna trade him.
It's way worse than I thought.

Aging playing with slow bat and long swing sees a decline (some major) in Hard Hit%, Exit Velo, Barrels, Fly Balls, Pop Ups, and pretty much all key batted ball data

Unless we think we have the magic touch to fix his swing, I want no part of him.
And it's not sour grapes because he blocked the trade. I felt that way 2 days ago.

The Dodgers won't make that trade. No way they play Nolan over Freeman or Muncy. Maybe, the Angels would do it, but they're not a contender.

If 6/175 gets it done, I MIGHT consider pulling the trigger on that. Bregman brings intangibles (and keeps the clubhouse happy) and you then pray that his bat holds up. Infield defense improves with him back and Paredes at 1B.

Then you either have to use Framber in a trade to get a young controllable OF upgrade or you have to bite the bullet on luxury tax and sign one legit OF bat to make all of this work.

That also means decreasing some roster flexibility as Yainer can only play on his off days if Yordan is in LF (so Diaz can DH). Cam Smith, DeZenzo, Matthews, etc. all look to polish up their OF skills (unless you think Matthews has a shot to be good enough to unseat Pena at SS).

I know Jim doesn't want to mess with his 6-year rule, but the team would be so much better off if the deal was 7/175 instead of 6/175. Bregman signing for ~29 M would mean we have to move Pressly and not eat any of his deal. Right now it looks like 29 M puts us ~5 M over. Pressly going would mean we have ~9 M to finish off the roster. That would get you some cheap guy like Kepler and a super dart throw reliever.

Regardless, I think both would be mistakes if that is plan A over spending money on OF or Polar Bear. If I am Dana I go trade for Donovan, sign Profar, and then use the rest on the best projectable reliever.
