Santander and Teoscar both have QO tags. Profar does not and he projects at the cheapest of the 3. But there is a reason. Last year was outlier for him. He's also a LFer where as the other 2 are both corners.

Paredes looks like a younger, cheaper Bregman to me who hasn't fully hit his prime in the majors yet.
Wesneski feels like one of those pitchers who underperforms elsewhere but gets into the Astros pitching lab with their analytics and so forth, scouting, and approach and suddenly becomes dominant. Much like Kikuchi did after they traded for him.
And Cam Smith has the look of a guy who will be in the All Star game a lot over his career. He lit up minor league pitching after getting drafted last summer. In 32 games across A, A+, and AA he had 115 AB and slashed .313/.396/.609 for a 1.005 OPS. He'll probably get an invite to spring training to see MLB/AAAA pitching and be assigned to Corpus in AA to start the season.

Obviously you hate to see Tucker get traded, but he had only 1 year left and was never going to sign with what we were going to offer him.
I love this trade. We get a controllable 3B for 3 years who hits hard to left field and basically has comparable stats to Alex Bregman. We now do not need to chase Alex Bregman if he doesn't want to sign our offer, and we get the QO pick from him leaving. If Alex does stay, then Peredes fills a need for a 1B.
We also get a hot prospect with Cam Smith who is projected to slot in at 3B and if he gets in the league early then we can move Peredes over to 1B.
We get a really solid reliever that's young and has years of control left.
This is the kind of trade you make to silently rebuild and let other teams overpay for superstars when we have multiple positions we're trying to fill with above average players even if they aren't superstars.
Also gives us payroll flexibility to go after some outfield talent. Doesn't need to be superstars, just needs to be better than than the garbage we have out there.

So Crane wasn't willing to trade with the Yankees at all? Seems weird. IMHO, **** the Yankees, but if they offer the better deal, why do I care Tucker is going there for 1 year?
CF could be a problem. Not really any good FAs out there. I guess if we could sign a LF and RFer then Dubon could play center? I just really dread seeing Meyers or Chas out there for another season.

I wonder if the Astros might look at someone like Carlos Santana on a modest 1 year deal to play 1B until Cam Smith reaches the Show (allowing Paredes to slide to 1B).
Then you could try to make one splash signing (Santander?) in the OF. Those 2 would also add a pair of switch hitters to what is suddenly a VERY RH lineup.

You can't. But that's a risk either way and shouldn't be considered as part of the deal. If he stayed in Houston, he could sign with the Yankees.

Ah, gotcha…I misunderstood. I thought you were claiming he wouldn't accept any deal with the Yankees. This deal with the Cubs (in my opinion) is great and the best they could hope for as a 1 year rental. Shores up 2 positions cheap for the next 3 years minimum (and 6 years in Smith's case). Also frees up money to replace Tucker. I hate to quote Moneyball, but you really are replacing Tucker in the aggregate…and for much cheaper.

I'd focus on OF help first. I feel better about platooning Jon at first with our catchers than I do about our current outfield. That first base platoon was actually productive. It also gets more bats in the lineup while allowing Yordan to DH. You don't want your outfield batting 7-8-9, so we have to seek help there.

That's where I'm at too. If he had played all year and totally balled out, it'd be way harder to see him go. After the injury taking so much time last year, I kinda feel very "meh" about him leaving.
