Got sidetracked…came here to ask, If Rangers going to prioritize arms….. Shane Beiber offer Similar to Mahle???? maybe sweeten the pot a bit?? Or spend on lineup?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
He was mentioned... but I don't recall a real discussion. I see him as an option, but I don't know that I want to spend on him. Mahle hits $11M on CBT each yr.

With Eovaldi ($20M), but not Chafin (opt) and Robertson (opt)... the Rangers are sitting at about $205M in CBT That includes Serfs and projected-Arbs. It leaves about $36M to spend. $56 if Eovaldi declines. I expect us to be below CBT.

I think we need a DH/RHB, 2-3 BP pieces and 2 depth SPs.

Mahle made $5+$16, but his CBT was split at $11M each year. He is 8 months older than Bieber, so they are relatively in the same places, although Beiber had his TJ in mid-Apr, Mahle in last May. About 6 weeks later into the season. Meaning Beiber is a better candidate to pitch meaningful baseball than Mahle was.

CY indicated Eovaldi and Heaney are a priority. If Eovaldi doesn't accept his $20M opt, that likely means he has offers for a multi-year deal.

Sasaki, if posted, might be an option, but many expect he could sign with the Dodgers. He'll be subject to Int'l Pool money. He likely makes more in endorsements playing for LAD than he would Pool money.

If we miss on Sasaki, Eovaldi, and Heaney... I'm for lower tier options like resigning Urena and/or Lorenzen. Then, keep our SP powder dry for any mid-season bargains.

The question has been asked several times on here as to why Huff hasn't been given more of an opportunity at the ML level.

Well, I've been reading some stuff lately that sheds some light on that. Aside from the fact that he hasn't hit particularly well in the minors (this season on 13 HRs, .246 with 150 Ks) he apparently isn't doing the little things that you have to do as a catcher.

Quote:

The Rangers like Huff behind the plate in terms of receiving and throwing, but they are still not sold on his game preparation.

"Sam's going to have to earn his spot in spring training," Young said. "It's a performance-based game, and as much as we like Sam and believe there's potential there, it's up to him to perform at a level that makes the decision for us."
That's not very confidence inspiring, and sounds like it's time to put up or shut up for Sam. I expect he'll be traded or DFA'd by the end of spring training unless he really shows something.

Doesn't sound good for Huff, and not sure what his issue is. He seemed poised after 2023 to make the jump but it didn't happen.

COTS has him in his final Serf year for '25. Appears he is a Super-Two, meaning he has 4 years of Arb.

Not sure the Rangers have anyone in the system that is even close. Unless we can trade for a prospect like O's Basallo, who will be blocked by Rutschman. But, you're giving up an arm for him. He is the best C prospect (13th overall), according the MLB.

We likely have to sign a b/u C for 2025. Returning Carson Kelly wouldn't be bad.

Best catching prospect the Rangers have currently is Jesus Lopez (19 and probably 2-3 years away). I'd say finding a backup catcher is at the top of the list of "needs" for the Rangers. Will likely be somebody like James McCann.

It's been discussed on this thread, but Evan goes into Nate Lowe and his upcoming (likely) $10M+ salary following arbitration. in short, if the Rangers decide to move on and "save" money at 1B to help get under the CBT for 2025, we won't be getting an upgrade at 1B as a replacement.

I wonder if moving seager to first and smith to full time SS would be an option.

I am a big advocate of moving Seager to first base at some point. I think it's inevitable, although I don't see it happening in 2025.

Whether he does or not though, I love what Josh Smith gave this team in 2024 but I really don't see him as an every day shortstop. I like him way better as a utility guy.

Good post, thanks for framing the offseason.

Any high character veteran position player or DH that is out there that might make sense for us ? Even just for 1 season, like a Vlad Sr. I was fond of adding Charlie Blackmon for 2024 but he stayed in COL to retire.

JD Martinez, Joc Pederson, McCutcheon, or Jason Heyward? Michael A Taylor?

no link, but I read on a somewhat weird site that David Robertson is walking away from baseball…… anyone else heard anything like that?

Was hoping to get him back, but he would turn 40 at the start of the season. There is a mutual option for 2025 that would pay him $7MM (Rangers would have to pay $1.5mm to buy out), which in reality means he's a FA. I could see this being a "I'm retiring unless I get more $$$" play.

I don't really like the Yankess or the Dodgers, but here is somebody you can root for during the WS:

Jose coached my twin boys for a couple of seasons of select ball when he was in Frisco. He was the assistant coach since he couldn't commit to being at every practice and game because of his schedule. I don't remember him ever missing anything though.

He is a really, really good dude that loves our boys. He still texts and FaceTimes with my sons. One of my boys was talking to one of his high school assistant coaches about it one day, the coach doubted his story, so he FaceTimed Jose and he answered from the Yankee locker room. He grabbed Aaron Judge so they could say hi to him as well.

I'm a big fan. That's who I would love to see back in a Ranger uniform one day.

I'm rooting for the Yankees because all of the Clayton Kershaw teasing the last few years ( with no pay off) and the dodgers pretty much acquire everyone else's good players without paying or giving up anything of value.

The dodgers are probably the richest team in the league and have a really good farm, but nobody is able to get any of their decent prospects. The shohei backloading contract was bull**** as well. I knew that we deserved either Walker buehler or Alex verdugo from the dodgers in exchange for Yu Darvish, but all we got was willie Calhoun who was worthless.

Anyone who doubts the above statement should look at what Darvish did for the dodgers in the regular season and look at the fact that the Dodgers thought highly enough of Darvish to start him 3 times out of 7 games in the World Series.

I pretty much never pull for the Yankees unless they're playing the Astros or dodgers.

I'm not going to watch any of the WS this year because I can't stand either one of those teams. Zero interest in it. I remember I got that way about the Super Bowl back when it seemed like New England was in it every single season. I would've been much more interested in something like Milwaukee/Cleveland - the Dodgers & Yankees have just been there so many times I can't get interested in it. Part of it may be because I was a kid in the 70s when it seemed like it was the Yankees/Dodgers every year.

This is where I'm at. I tried to take the same approach as Grapesoda, but not pulling for the dodgers means I'm pulling for the yankees and I simply cannot bring myself to do so. Vice-versa is even worse. Thank goodness it's football season

Well the problem with that is no one forces teams to trade with other teams. Daniels had 28 other teams to talk to, or at least 5-6 that were in contention.

Regardless, I'm not really pulling for either team to win or lose. I like Dave Roberts and I like some players on both teams. Obviously I like Jose Trevino. But what my plan has been is to avoid MLB Network and not watch any ESPN baseball coverage leading up to the World Series and it has worked so very well. Now I'll watch tonight once I get home with the volume turned down low enough to where I'm not listening to the announcers blowing both organizations the entire game.

I like this approach. I'll be doing something pretty similar most likely. I do like playoff baseball though, the extra intensity it brings, etc. But I will NOT be giving up any of my college football Saturday for it though, especially with G2 set for Saturday night... and the Aggies are playing Saturday night. But even if it didn't overlap with the Aggie game time, I'd likely still be bypassing G2 for CFB.

Trevino was a good story and an easy person to root for. Good to hear his personal side translated.

Like him or not, JD stuck with his players.
