Sounds like Scherzer's return is imminent. I'd guess deGrom is still a ways off and we'll see when Mahle returns how far deGrom is.

I don't expect deGrom until the end of July at the absolute earliest, and with this looking like a "look forward to 2025" type of season, maybe even the end of August.

Even with the blowout numbers from last night, he still has a 3.31 ERA. He has had some injury stuff recently, but been a solid SP for us this season.

At the risk of sounding like our former AD, I think it's about managing expectations.

Realistic expectation for deGrom is that he comes back late this season, and gets a few innings in to further his recovery and hopefully set him up to be vintage deGrom in '25. Unrealistic expectation is that he comes back this season and dominates the way he has in the past. I can't think of a single pitcher who came back from TJ and was immediately as good as they were prior to. It takes a long time to recover from the surgery and then it also takes a while to get back in the groove of pitching.

Not counting out the playoffs this season, but if you're counting on deGrom to be a big piece of that, you're kidding yourself IMO.

Agreed. He's not giving you more than a handful of innings at the absolute most but I do think he needs to be out there pitching.

We are right where we need to be.

DeGrom seems to be about 2-3 weeks behind Mahle. He pitched off a mound yesterday and taking a week off then will throw 2 bullpens next week. All fastballs yesterday.

I think if DeGrom throws 50 IP this year we should consider that a huge win in getting ready for next year.

My belief is that we stay in contention for the playoffs and end up just making it. Was hoping for a bit better offense than what we have shown thus far. Pitching will round into form. But if we can make a run and make the playoffs, that should set us up well for next year when we hopefully don't start with the large amount of injuries.

Agree but I doubt we get that many. And how effective will he be? Don't forget this is his second TJ

I think he's going to largely be the same guy from a "stuff" standpoint. Medicine and knowledge of TJ is just too advanced for him to go from 100% deGrom to 75% or less of what he was. Will he be 2018 deGrom? No probably not, but could he still give you a 2019 version if he stays healthy? I think so.

Maybe. He's also 35 years old...not the same as a 26 year old recovering from TJ. I think he can get back to his old self, but I think 75% of what he was is probably what we'll see this season at best. Hope I'm wrong.

Oh yeah this season he won't be the same guy. I agree 100% with that. I was speaking to the time left on his contract. I think he can be 85% or more of his best self with a good offseason for his remaining time here as long as he doesn't have anymore major injuries.

Know we are light on bats at the moment, which is an understatement, but watching El Bombi last night, he might need some time off. He can't catch up with a low 90's fastball in the middle of the zone.

Thats exactly why….he has been very solid…. hopefully he just had a bad outing…… just seems everytime someone has a blow up game, that they were trying to battle thru something
