Good outing for Bradford! Just 1 unearned run.

Lorenzen getting stretched out, up to 89 pitches. Probably needs another outing to sharpen up more based on the stats. This is basically his spring training.

Wilson says he may be in the rotation next week:

Gray, Heaney and Dunning better start shoving, and quick.

Yeah, he's just-a guy, nothing more. He will likely lose his spot on the 40 once the reinforcement pitchers start to become available.

Keep Dunning in that rotation and move Gray to the pen and focus on two pitches as a reliever. Dude was nails in the playoffs when he didn't try to throw the kitchen sink at people.

This was my thoughts last week but caught hell for it. Contract be damned I think Gray, and Heaney for that matter, can help this team more out of the pen than as starters.

We are in the middle of 17 straight days without an off day. Go 6 man rotation once or twice and figure out who heads to the pen in a few weeks.

Pretty sure that's the plan with Lorenzen joining the staff his next start, which should be early next week.

Hopefully Gray and Heaney figure it out and we have several options to rest guys and/ or send arms to the pen when the reinforcements come in, starting with Max next month.

Speaking of a 6 man rotation, do you think it's possible teams consistently implement this in a way to limit the injuries to pitchers with more rest?

We all know pitch clock, spin rate, velocity, etc. aren't going anywhere and that seems the only logical solution to help curb the issue
gigem1223

Would be ideal but how many teams have 6 viable MLB starting pitchers? Most teams struggle to even have 4 that give you a chance to win most nights. Also gotta factor in performance based contracts and guys like Cole Hamels who threw a fit at the thought of it.

What a great outing by Bradford:

6.2 IP, 5H, 0ER, 1BB, 7SO (94-62)
1 Unearned Run.

Lorenzen pitched for RR, today:
4.2 IP, 6H, 4ER, 5BB, 6K (89PC-53ST)

Nadel said that Lorenzen's next stop is with the Rangers. He said Eovaldi will get the Start in Houston.

He said Lorenzen would get slotted into the Detroit series and looking at the projected SPs...

4/11 v A's: Gray
4/12 @ Houston: Dunning
4/13 @ Houston: Heaney
4/14 @ Houston: Eovaldi
4/15 @ Detroit: <Empty>
4/16 @ Detroit: Gray
4/17 @ Detroit: Dunning
4/18 @ Detroit: Heaney

This would suggest Lorenzen bumps Bradford on the 15th.

Honestly, Bradford may not be the big name SP... but he has been our best SP this season.

That's a hard sell, to me:
3GS, 1.40 ERA, 19.1 IP, 10H, 17 SO, 2BB, 0.62 WHIP.

No way Bradford is bumped from the rotation right now. He's been our best starting pitcher.

True. I'm not a big stats guy but I wonder how that could affect the average injury rate. I mean having a 6th man with say a ~5.00 ERA (?) give or take that keeps you from losing McLanahan, Bieber, Cole, deGrom etc. for a year plus and consistently getting 20 starts a year has to be worth something.

All the talk of the mounting issue this year makes me wonder what teams are going to come up with cause how it is just isn't sustainable. Pitchers won't get long term deals anymore and something will have to give. Fun part is figuring out what and imo makes for a pretty cool convo

If anything Lorenzen takes spot of Heaney or Gray in rotation.

Hernandez with another shutout inning tonight. Time for him to come back to the big club.
gigem1223

Doesn't sound like he's taking anyone's spot for now. Sounds like they'll go to a 6 man for a bit and make a decision when needed.

If you haven't watched Dr. Meister, you ought to...

You probably know, but he is the Rangers Ortho and one of (if not the) leading surgeon doing TJs these days.

If AJP developed a relationship with him while with the Rangers, there is a good chance that means he is around and Maddux and our SPs are getting some direction/advice from him.

He specifically calls out Dunning and Bradford in a good way.

Remember teams used to use a 4-man rotation. The Dodgers 1st went to a 5-man rotation in the 1970s. Granted the mound was lowered 5" in 1969 (from 15" to 10")

SPs used to throw 125-130 PC 10 years ago and now they only hit 90-95.

Saw that, pretty awesome interview! Never put 2 and 2 together of the Dunning, Bradford type that don't over power you, most certainly by design and maybe we're catching on. The rest of our healthy starters aren't really flame throwers either..and the ones we do have that are out are Scherzer and deGrom who throw gas (or at least Scherzer used to)

I think with the way injuries have been going you talk to the performance based guys about how they're going to hit any of those criteria while they're out for the year recovering from TJ.
DallasAg 94

And Max's injury right now is a herniated disk. At 40'ish, you're going to see those types of things, which are different than the elbow type issues. Granted he finished 2023's regular season with a shoulder muscle issue.

If I were Chris Young... I'd have a video compilation for pitchers I'm looking at signing for FA and saying, "Mechanic-wise, what are concerns?!" I'd do that before I'd even talk to an agent or getting health info.

I hadn't thought about having an Orthopedic consulting on pitching mechanics. I had wanted to be an Orthopedic from 6th grade until my 2nd year of college when I realized it took 13 years of college/med school. I had a great arm, played 3B and CF mostly. Never much of a pitcher. However, I've always looked at P from an engineering and physics perspective, not a health perspective.

When criminals get asked why they committed the crime, a common response is they never thought they'd get caught.

I GMs are starting to bake in a TJ surgery as a cost of doing business, but I think SPs believe it won't happen to them.

I think when you look at a guy like Hamels, you're looking at a guy who pitched over 183 IP for 11 seasons in a 15 year career. He hung them up in 2020 and AFAIK, never had TJ surgery. He was a model of being durable.

Japan uses a 6-man rotation, which I believe is because because they have 6 game weeks. I believe the Minors have adopted a similar scheme based mostly around limiting travel and costs.
