Good. Would have been an ultimate fubar to not retain him. Former player, from the area, helped put together a World Series winner, etc.

Without knowing any details, I'm sure CY could find another place to make a ton more money.

OTOH... regardless of how 2024 goes, he brings back a manager that has a history of winning WS in alternating years.

He has a team loaded with talent for 2025 and baseline expectations should be a playoff team.

CY could become a very special GM.

Rob Drake is a like a one man walking advertisement for the ABS system.

There's no CBT for non-players and Davis is not cheap, despite what this thread has tried to make him out to be. I would bet CY has been renewed right in line with his market value. There is no reason to give him a hometown discount or any reason for him to accept it.

2 k's for DeGrom in his first inning back. Gave up an infield single because Lowe can't pull in a pretty routine one hop throw to first.

Heaney, Leiter and Gray as possibilities.

He doesn't need to worry about a 2nd gold glove this year. I don't track fielding stats, but he seems to have more than his share of errors this season for a 1B.

Garcia has regressed so bad. 3-1 count and gets 2 middle middle fastballs and can't connect

I wasn't implying Davis was cheap.

Some owners are willing to spend ridiculously stupid money for what they want.

I also didn't say he took a home-town discount.

Both statements could be true.

Heaney is a FA.

Opinion: Gray and Dunning will be gone.

I was asking myself. Why not bring in Yates to pitch to Rodriguez since we haven't been able to get him out all night?

Pretty good read from Evan on CY and overall state of the team. He has been mentioning the CBT in articles off an on for a while now, so I expect the Rangers to start the season under the CBT threshold, in hopes of resetting the CBT tax (that increases each year you are over). Rocker/Leiter/Bradford will make that more doable.

Not a bad thing if they do IMO. If that's the route they choose to go, however, we need to reign in our expectations regarding big FA signings, because that likely won't be happening. Any notable additions would likely have to come via a trade.

I haven't expected them to make any big FA signings this offseason. Not even sure where you would do that other than pitching.

If they can re-sign Eovaldi and Yates, that would be good on the FA front for me.

And then get under the CBT with the other contracts falling off and, if I'm CY, I trade Lowe. I like the guy and he's a good player, but he's not worth the $11-12MM he'll get in the offseason. And Taveras isn't worth $5MM or whatever he gets, but need to see if Carter is healthy before doing anything there.

Agreed. I don't think anyone here has had high hopes to add a big FA. Having said that... Sasaki was mentioned in the article above. He's an International Pool signing for someone if Posted.

With 4.0 IP on Tuesday, Eovaldi's vOpt is reached for $20M in '25. He will be 35 before the season starts and I suspect he'll leverage that Option for a 3+/- yr deal either with Texas or someone else.

Love the idea of Yates. I think he'll be out of our market, as is. I expect us to make a ton of off-season moves.

Lowe has 2 more Arbs. I agree he likely projects to $11M and agree that's not where I'd want to spend $11M. Now, they can come to an agreement of any number.

Taveras has 3 more Arbs. He is worth less than he made in '24... but you are probably right where he will be. We have some options even without Carter. Adolis is in a contract year, so he should put up huge numbers (I hope).

If we are in on Sasaki, I could see Lowe and/or Taveras returning Int'l Pool money.

Agreed about CBT.

I like that article and it covers most of what we've talked about all year.

Resetting the CBT would be good. There are punitive issues that comes with going over. Not a fan of blowing out the payroll, even if you can. Personally, I want the Rangers at or near the CBT. Sucked not adding something at the deadline, but the bigger picture of keeping prospects was important long-term.

The article addresses some of the comments Grant made in previous articles (July) about moving money and players. CBT.

I think in 2024, CY focused TOO much on the SP side and the result was an O that never really clicked. Much of the same offense from 2023, we never had the depth in '24 to address resting/slumping/injured players. We had the depth on the P, which allowed the SP to absorb the injuries. I think Duran, Smith, Carter, and Langford were anticipated to fill-in sufficiently. The O just never seemed to adjust.

Love that CY focuses on P and agree filling the roles of Hitting are easier and cheaper, unless you spend TOO much on P. Mahle was the big issue for me. He was cheap on Payroll hit in '24, but came with a big CBT hit. That sealed the lack of O additions.

Sasaki will be the one to watch. He was talked about here during last off-season when it looked like he might get posted. This article is relatively recent and goes into details:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/08/latest-on-roki-sasakis-potential-posting.html

We could add him for Int'l Pool money. Here are the 2025 numbers that go into effect Jan 15. The article mentions CY going to Japan so I'm sure aside from watching him pitch... he is wining and dining with team execs.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2025-international-signing-bonus-pools-for-each-mlb-team/

Top Pool is $7.6M (8 teams) and the Rangers are in the $6.3M Pool level. The article implies an $11M Max. Whether Lowe (2 Arbs), Taveras (3 Arbs), Gray ($13M/14M-CBT), or Dunning (2yrs Arb)... Rangers could have some moving pieces. Then, you'd have 6 yrs (I believe) of team control of Sasaki. Rangers should know the fate of Eovaldi's option prior to Jan 15, 2025.

2025? : deGrom, Eovaldi ($20M), Sasaki ($750K), Mahle ($16.5/11-CBT)
Serfs: Bradford, Rocker, Leiter

Now would be the time to get Sasaki (if it's possible). A few more years in Japan and he'll no longer be subject to the International Pool $ and will go to the highest bidder.

Mets called up Luisangel Acuna, yesterday. Went 2-4.

Offensively, his minor league season looks like Taveras...Good for him getting the call.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It will be almost completely up to his Nippon team - Chiba Lotte Marines.

Quote:

Yamamoto's $325MM deal came with a windfall for his former team, the Orix Buffaloes. The Dodgers paid the Buffaloes $50.625MM to release him from his contract. If the Marines were to let Sasaki walk this winter, they'd get a small fraction of that amount because of the bonus restrictions. A $10MM bonus for Sasaki would come with a $2MM posting fee for the Marines. That's meager compensation for parting ways with their 23-year-old ace.
If they post him in January for the 2025 period... they'll get about $2M +/-. If they wait for 2 years after the 2026 season (he'll be 25 then)... likely January of 2027, they could see upwards of $50M. The would also lose their best SP and one of the best SPs in the league.

The downside to keeping him for 2 years is the bad press they'll receive for not honoring his request and the impact that would have on other players not wanting to go there because of it.

Part of my conversation with them would be the possibility of selling Lotte confections in GLF.

Going to the game next Sunday for the replica WS ring (first 29k). Doors open at noon but was curious what time y'all recommend I should get there to stand in line? Fingers crossed I get a Seager ring.

With this rotation Seattle has no reason not to make a deep run. This weekend felt like we were getting strangled by the '90's Braves.
