Isn't the press box at a weird location in Oakland? It's like at the 50 yard line for football, which is down the left field line for baseball?

Hard to know at this point. The bullpen has been a strength and we've had too many injuries to really judge the rotation and line up. I still think the biggest moves will be just getting guys back healthy (Eovaldi, Bradford, Scherzer, Mahle, deGrom, Jung, Langford).
Wish they gave weekly injury updates on all these guys. Seems like we don't get enough news about something that is literally the biggest story of our season and will determine how far we will go.

I know this isn't the weekly update you wanted but I was interested as well. Here are the most recent updates I found on Rotowire and MLB Trade Rumors for our guys.
  • Eovaldi (estimated return: 5/18/24)
  • MON, MAY 6, 7:27 PMManager Bruce Bochy stated Monday that Eovaldi isn't dealing with a sports hernia and should be cleared to return after serving the 15-day minimum on the injured list, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.Spin: The Rangers initially believed that Eovaldi wouldn't be forced to miss more than the required 15 days, and this report was confirmed after the right-hander visited a specialist Monday. The 34-year-old will tentatively be cleared to return sometime during his club's upcoming series against the Angels, which runs from May 17 through May 19.
  • Bradford (estimated return: 5/24/24)
  • FRI, APR 26, 4:16 PMBradford (back) was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his rib Friday and is expected to be sidelined for about a month, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.Spin: The left-hander wasn't progressing as expected in his recovery after landing on the shelf April 14 with lower-back soreness, and a rib stress fracture is the apparent culprit. Bradford will now be sidelined through at least late May, and a more specific timeline should come into focus as he ramps up his rehab work.
  • Scherzer (estimated return: 5/13/24)
  • RotowireSUN, MAY 5, 12:16 PMScherzer (back) is still in a holding pattern while waiting for the soreness in his right thumb to subside, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.Spin: Texas manager Bruce Bochy said the thumb improves every day, but Scherzer is not yet at the point where he can play catch. The right-hander threw 52 pitches in his first rehab start but experienced thumb soreness afterward. His following rehab start, originally scheduled for April 30, was pushed backMLB Trade Rumors 5/1/24Right-hander Max Scherzer has made one rehab start already and was slated for a second one but will be delayed a few days after experiencing some soreness in his right thumb, GM Chris Young told the Rangers beat last night (X link via Kennedi Landry of MLB.com). They're hopeful he can make his next start this week. The 39-year-old Scherzer has spent the entire season to date on the 15-day injured list while he mends from offseason back surgery. He was excellent in eight starts down the stretch last year, pitching to a 3.20 ERA with a 29.9% strikeout rate and 8.5% walk rate following the trade that sent him from the Mets to Texas. The original thought was that Scherzer would be sidelined into June, but the Rangers held off on placing the three-time Cy Young winner on the 60-day injured list with his recovery ahead of schedule. There's no indication that his back is providing any problems, so assuming the thumb injury proves minor, a mid-May return still feels viable.
  • Langford (estimated return: 5/30/24)
  • MON, MAY 6, 2:16 PMThe Rangers placed Langford (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Monday.Spin: Just as manager Bruce Bochy said would be the case following Sunday's 3-2 win over the Royals, Langford was deactivated due to a right hamstring strain that's expected to sideline the rookie for around 3-to-4 weeks. Texas called up infielder Jonathan Ornelas from Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.
  • Jung (estimated return: 5/28/24)
  • TUE, APR 23, 3:23 PMJung will have his fractured right wrist examined Friday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.Spin: Progress on Jung's healing will be evaluated, and the hope is that he will get a better idea during the exam as to what a potential timeline for a return could look like. Jung had surgery on the wrist in early April, and the rough timetable provided at the time was 8-to-10 weeks.
  • deGrom (estimated return: 8/1/24)
  • MON, APR 8, 4:42 PMDeGrom (elbow) has extended his flat-ground throwing to 90 feet, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.Spin: It's the next step in deGrom's throwing progression as he continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Everything seems to have gone as expected to this point with deGrom, who hopes to rejoin the Rangers' rotation at some point late in the season.
  • Mahle (estimated return: 8/1/24)
  • MLBTR 5/1/24Mahle is pitching off a mound and will join his teammates on their upcoming road trip. Mahle and Rocker aren't yet to the point where they're facing live hitters, but each is progressing well through the rehab process.

I think it is rooted in the the fact he may have never played much baseball. I think broadcasting baseball was likely opportunistic and not necessarily an expectation or intentional path.

Let's chat talent and improvements. We're 36G (22%) on the way through the season. 40 puts you at about 25%.

Starting Pitching
Last year, I think it came apparent that SP injuries among the leading teams were going to be an issue. Having Eovaldi-Monty seemed as good a 1-2 as anyone and we were able to ride them to a Championship. 2024, IMO, will be more traditional with the need for a 1-2-2 rotation Teams will need a #1 and two #2s.

The Rangers have a 3.49 ERA for SP which puts them 10th in MLB and 7th in the AL.
Tigers and Yankees are at 3.46, so not far off.

I mentioned we have 4 SPs Qualified.

9. Jon Gray: 7GS, 2.50, 39.2, 42 SO, 8G
10. Eovaldi: 7GS, 2.61, 41.1, 44 SO
32. Dunning: 7GS, 4.10, 37.1, 43 SO
38. AHeaney: 7GS, 4.50, 36.0, 31 SO

Gray and Heaney got off to slow starts and seem settled in.
Gray:
G1: 3.2 IP, 5ER, 7H, 3 BB, 2 SO
G2-7: 36.0 IP, 1.50 ERA, 6ER (Total), 8BB, 40 SO.

Bradford: 3GS, 1.40
Lorenzen: 4GS, 3.52

Ordered based on return mentioned above:
Scherzer (5/13), Bradford (5/24), Mahle (8/1), deGrom (8/1), we have 10 legit SP options for the playoffs. Getting to carry 13 P adds flexibility, and we'll discuss RP separately.

Eovaldi is your #1. Proven.
At this point, Gray could be a #2. He rose to the occasion in 2024 and seemed like he wants more.

Any one of the other 5 are good odds to hit just one more, IMO.

Dunning, Heaney, and Lorenzen could be BP options or 4th SPs in a BP game, if necessary.

For me, I want to get cute. I'd like to maximize our talent and think trading off a SP like Heaney or Lorenzen could get a nice haul back. CY and Bochy don't seem like the types that likes to get cute... but we are certainly in a good place and think it is highly unlikely we add anything.

In July leading up to the trade deadline, I'll likely look at the other rotations and talk matchups. Seattle for instance.

I'm a little sceptical that we will see Max back before Bradford and Eovaldi. But, for the sake of conversation, let's say they all come back in May. That makes for some interesting decisions right around the corner. If you have (from the post above):

9. Jon Gray: 7GS, 2.50, 39.2, 42 SO, 8G
10. Eovaldi: 7GS, 2.61, 41.1, 44 SO
32. Dunning: 7GS, 4.10, 37.1, 43 SO
38. AHeaney: 7GS, 4.50, 36.0, 31 SO (with Heaney looking MUCH improved lately)
Lorenzen: 4GS, 3.52
Bradford: 3GS, 1.40
Scherzer

And the bullpen looking fairly stout, that is 7 guys for 5 spots. How do you handle the roster? I could see Urena going and Bradford, Dunning, or Heaney becoming the long relief guy. But that still leaves you with 6 SP's. Does Yerry go and 2 of the 3 become bullpen guys and you use them whenever a starter struggles in the first 3 innings?
DallasAg 94

So, let's continue.

Relief Pitching:
KirbYates: 13G, 0.00, 15.0 IP, 5 BB, 16 SO, 0.53 WHIP (6 for 6 Saves)
Robertson: 16G, 0.96, 18.2 IP, 6 BB, 22 SO, 0.80 WHIP
JoshSborz: 6G, 1.69, 5.1 IP, 1 BB, 5 SO, 1.31 WHIP
Hernandez: 3G, 2.08, 4.1 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO, 0.92 WHIP
JacobLatz: 16G, 2.81, 16.0 IP, 4 BB, 14 SO, 1.00 WHIP

J Leclerc: 13G, 5.14, 14.0 IP, 15 SO, 1.57 WHIP

JoseUrena: 10G, 4.35, 20.2 IP, 9 BB, 16 SO, 1.31 WHIP

Latz is our only Lefty. I don't know if we need another Lefty, but that might be an "ask." Heaney is a Lefty that could be used there. As are Bradford and Burke.

Robertson is the only one whose usage is starting to concern. Yates and Latz are about where I'd want them.

I think there is a certain trust for Sborz and Leclerc based on last year. Still early in the season with Hernandez.

ETA: I like Urena in the role he has and the success he has provided. A 2.0 +/- IP bridge for a SP that runs out of PC has been huge saving our back-end guys.

Right now, the BP looks solid, but 2 weeks from now, I might be ready to get rid of all of them.

I get the feeling it will be early June before we see any one of those guys back. Maybe Eovaldi can get back with it easy enough because it's only a slight groin issue, but even then I don't trust the timelines much.

Mahle will also be back before deGrom imo. DeGrom feels like a late early August comeback (like was said above), whereas Mahle could be late June or early July. If he and Rocker are already throwing off of a mound, it's only a matter of time before they start facing live hitters and stretching themselves out a bit, and then it's a rehab stint in the minors. I could see that happening by the end of June.

The projected timeline for Mahle has been 1+ earlier than deGrom all along, so unless he has a setback you will be correct.

I am not getting my hopes too high for 2024 for Mahle or deGrom, they will likely be on pitch counts and won't be a traditional starter again until 2025 most likely. Since both Dunning and Heaney typically struggle getting deep into games (third time through the lineup for Dunning is usually it), I could see one of Mahle/deGrom getting paired with Heaney and the other getting paired with Dunning. i.e. Let deGrom start and go 45 pitches (or whatever his number is) and then hand it over to Heaney.

I think I agree with you.

At a time when Lorenzen was just coming on board and as Heaney/Gray/Dunning struggled early, losing Eovaldi and Bradford created an urgency for the Rangers to see a willingness for Scherzer (and others) to push his return.

I don't think we live in that urgency, anymore. At least for now. Looks like Urena gets the GS today. What a reward for him. We need a SP for the DH, tomorrow. Could be Leiter?! He last pitched 5/2. Aiden Anderson got the GS today for RR. It is his 5th GS in 128G of minor league ball and 1st for 2024. Could be a sign.

5/13 shows "Open" so, it could be Scherzer, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they delayed his return.

And if either Eovaldi (5/18?) or Scherzer get slow-rolled coming back.. even Bradford... I think that just helps the rotation.

I've always seen Mahle as ahead of deGrom even though listed together, so I agree with you there. Rocker is a mystery. Do we even have the time/spot to waste entertaining him in the BP, even?! Maybe.

I just want to say that having Rocker in our minor league system brings a smile to my face.

If he gets healthy, he is an absolute dude. Who knows if he will succeed in the majors, but he is just about everything I like in a starting pitching prospect.

He's talked about an expected 8-10 game winning streak for weeks now. It just never seems to materialize for this version of the Astros.

I assume it is from the same interview, but there was a popup message on my phone saying Astros GM: "we won't be sellers".

I didn't click to read it. But I assume that means they will be all in for one last run at it. Their minor league talent pool is a mess, so they don't have much to trade. I assume they may be willing to take on salary to add to their roster.

Astros can certainly rattle off 6-8 wins in a row or go 22-8 in a 30 game span. The thing is so can we. The Astros are putting a lot of the blame on injuries yet we have more injuries and have been able to weather the storm so far. The Astros are not the big scary monster they used to be. If I was an Astros fan I would be concerned that the bats have been pretty decent and still finding ways to lose. They are 3rd in average. Just imagine what that team looks like when the bats hit an eventual slump. Meanwhile we should expect our bats to heat up at some point and have better starting pitching. Baseball is a funky game so who knows how this thing will end.
