For the longest time, I talked up how baseball was still the same sport "today" as it was when I was a kid; just better athletes. It was one of the reasons I still enjoyed the game.

Manfred has changed that. Look no further than the ludicrous extra inning rules. Add in more continued micromanagement and how MLB handled the sign stealing stuff and I don't give two ****s about MLB; just the Astros.

I'm the same way with college sports now, too. I only watch and follow A&M games.

So let me get this straight...

MLB implemented a pitch clock which takes it toll on pitchers conditioning and ability to go deep
MLB has seen a large rash of arm injuries to pitchers
MLB now wants to implement a rule requiring starters go 6 IP with a required IL stint if a pitcher is pulled for injury.

In what world does that make any fckn sense?

Imagine this rule last night.

Blanco left at 6 IP. He was well under 100 pitches, no runs allowed and left because he put his hand in front of a ball. He will not need an IL stint.

Litell left after 5 IP. Was under 100 pitches, 1 run allowed. Wasn't injured. He gave up 1 freaking hit. And somehow Manfred would outlaw that.

Dumb.

No stats to support my thoughts, but Altuve seems to me to be at his best when he is okay with hitting the ball the other way & not trying to pull everything.

Maybe a rule that a SP that starts an inning before throwing 6 has to face 3 batters in the inning before being pulled (to minimize managers running the SP out with the intent to face 1 batter).

I don't know. At some point (and it feels that point has been passed)
the tinkering is just mindless

There is already a rule that a pitcher has to pitch to 3 batters minimum.

I believe that rule applies to a relief pitchers. I was referring to applying that rule to the starting pitcher on a per inning basis until they've thrown 6. I don't think it's a good rule just riffing on what I understood to be the new proposal

If you are going to put an inning minimum, then it has to be tied to pitch count. 6 innings or 100 pitches, whichever comes first type of thing.

M's 4 back in the loss column!

Need to capitalize this weekend against the White Sox and make the M's believe it's time to pack it up for the season

nobody does it like the Mariners

Castillo, Kirby, Gilbert, and Miller are on pace to start 30 games apiece this season

and Seattle is still probably going to miss the playoffs

Servais might get canned if they miss the postseason again.

Since June 18, Seattle is 19-27.

They have come back to earth in 1 run and ManfredBall games. 3-8 in 1 run and 3-4 in ManfredBall. They were 18-10 in 1 run games before that.

By contrast we are 13-19 in 1 run games. And 6-3 in them since June 18.

June 18 was our horrific loss to the White Sox. It was a nexus date.

Man if we had played .500 ball in April we'd be up almost double digit games in the division right now

Hoping we can lock it up either in Seattle at the end of the season or maybe even right before

Just about the best possible outcome. Bryce Miller gets a dominant 7 inning, 9 K outing, and the Mariners still lose.

I hope not. They might be really good with a competent skipper. Their pitching is stupid good

Solid start for Montero in Sugar Land so far:

no runs allowed in 3 innings/games
allowed 3 hits
6 Ks

I seem to recall a rangerette season that was similar except the entire year they had a ridiculous record in 1 run and extra inning games.

I recall MLB discouraging teams from using "openers". Maybe this is their (over-reactive) way of ending it.

In a vast sea of dumb things in this world, a 6 inning minimum certainly rises to the top of that dumb.

Will be great the first time some guy throws 280 pitches and gives up 27 earned runs in 6 innings of a game that takes 9 hours t ofinish.

You can yank them after 4 ERs, 100 pitches, 6 innings, or they are injured under the current trial balloon floating around.

At first blush, it might sound ridiculous because of the possibility that a pitcher could carry an excessively heavy workload in early innings, got completely shelled or fall injured. In any of those cases, shouldn't a team be allowed to remove the starting pitcher?
Sure enough, the report indicates that the exceptions to the proposed six-inning minimum could include:
  • Throwing 100 pitches
  • Giving up four or more earned runs
  • Getting injured (with a required injured list stint to avoid manipulation)

What "problem" would the 6 inning rule solve?

I'm not opposed to the idea, but I don't know what anyone thinks this is trying to solve...... I'd have to assume it would be to speed up the game, but I'm not certain a "starter" lengthens the game much.

Monday's game neither starting pitcher went 6 and the game ended in 2:29.
Tuesday Kukuchi went 5.2, and the game ended in 2:32
Wednesday game Tampa's guy was pulled after 5, game went to extras, and it was over in 2:48.
An average MLB game is ~2:36

Unless this is a "let's throw something at the wall to see what sticks", I'm not sure what this is.
