It feels like a way to punish smarter teams that know how ineffective some pitchers can be when extended or facing a team for the third time.

Isn't part of the reason is to get pitchers to throttle back and help prevent injuries?

I've also heard they aren't fond of bullpen games.

I don't get who on the players' side would want it. Takes jobs from journeyman relievers and innings-eaters and increases risk of injury to starters.

Faedo pitched the first inning today and Maeda then went into the seventh for the Tigers. Guys are getting their bulk innings no matter what, who cares which innings they are?

Part of me wonders if it has more to do with gamblers wanting to know the pitching matchup.

This rule would turn Blake Snell into an average pitcher. He's a 5.1 IP guy.

Throttle back, get lit up, and the big pitching contracts disappear.

I'll throw out some other ideas.

  • Nobody can try and steal a base until the catcher feels he's properly stretched his arm out.
  • Nobody can bunt if the pitcher weighs more than 215 pounds.
  • All outfielders get one "time out" per game when the batter has to stand still while they run to get the ball.
  • If you're fat and you don't want to run the bases, you can use a ghost runner.
  • Aaron Judge gets 9 strikes before he's out.
  • If Ohtani guesses what the first pitch is, he wins $50,000 on his Bovada account.
  • If the Dodgers go into extra innings, they get a runner on third and are allowed 7 outs to start the inning.
  • Jose Altuve must submit to random buzzer tests every 5 minutes.

Be careful - hopefully Manfred never sees this.

Dying at both of these posts. Touche.

MLB may want to "fix" the dead balls as well.

If you get a chance to take in some games at West Palm, I highly recommend it. We went in 2019, and had a blast.

It's pretty clear what this rule is intending to do - it's to produce more offense. That's it.

MLB has the exact same data as the smart teams.

They fixed it. All the good balls go with the Yankees for Judge and Soto.

This! We went this year for the first time - and it's gonna be a yearly tradition from now on. Already planning next year's vacation.

6 innings/100 pitches/4ER - what's wrong with this?
It will take time to implement, but 100 pitches from a starter should be doable.

You guys forget to read more than headlines?
Love the double hook DH as well.

If you've got a starter who's in the 80s in the 4th because he's had a ton of traffic but avoided damage, and his command is clearly slipping, his manager can't see that and go to the pen until the wheels fall off and he gives up 4 runs. That's absurd.

Team A starts a "starter" for the first inning, then a bulk guy who goes 6, then an 8th inning guy and a closer.
Team B starter goes 6, followed by 3 guys that each go 1 inning.

What's the difference?

That was my point earlier. Tigers literally did this with Faedo and Maeda today. Maeda still got his nearly six innings and 90 pitches. Who cares?

Why is that absurd? Baseball was played that way for 100 years. It's the same for both teams.
Teams/players can adapt. Starters would leave something in the tank if they knew 100 pitches was the minimum.

It is absurd that a team MUST leave a pitcher in when he is having an off night or wavering in the 4th or 5th inning and forcing a team into a deep hole that they may not be able to recover. I'm old school enough that I'd like pitchers to go deeper into games but forcing such by rule is simply farcical.

Heck I don't even mind openers in a limited use as a way to help the back end of a teams starting rotation.

Haha, just saw that. This forum is as close as I get to social media. No X, Facebook, Instagram, or anything else. I do have a LinkedIn, although I don't post anything. Does that count?

But if I did, they would be a good name.
