We were lucky to not get swept the last 2 series. It could've been worse, not that anyone wants to hear that (and rightfully so)..

I have been a big supporter of Chas, bc I believe he's more the hitter from the last 2 years than this year. Pulling him for Cabbage, even though it was a left/right matchup, has got to be a low point. Regardless, if he's going to keep struggling more often than not, someone, ANYONE, has to step up.

With Tucker out, it's a terrible time for him, Dubon and Meyers to all suck. And that's what is happening. Then you stack that on top of Singleton and Pena...

I'm having a hard time being optimistic

White Sox just lost their 20th consecutive game, first team to do so since 1988.

I can't help but think about the game this offense lost against them and their rookie pitcher.

Joey is 1/7 with 3 K's today and yesterday. Don't think he is solving our problems.

Yea the more I objectively look at his AB's, he's got obvious k issues.

Obviously hasnt overcome the coaching he got from Cintron while he was here…

I spent the same amount of money as the astros put forth offensive effort today.

Nothing.

Hard to find a bright side in all this. Gunna have to figure it out soon. Season is in the final lap.

Hoping and praying for other teams in your division to lose is not the recipe I'd follow to make the playoffs. But seems like that's how it's going to have to be for us

And that's why today was such a blown opportunity.

So we are on track for an 83-79 record

If Verlander and Tucker come back in August and provide something of an impact, I'll go with 85. If not, 80 wins maximum. This team is very average, and the least little slip or additional injury will break it.

I'm leaning towards a losing record right now because of the schedule difficulty remaining and complete lack of interest in toning down the stupid plate approach.

I could see that. I think 86-76 but that's optimistic. I do think Seattle will win the division unless we pull off a hot streak. They have the tie breaker over us and an easier remaining schedule. So we better turn it around quick offensively

the Astros are in a really bad spot without Tucker for the month of August

the Orioles, Red Sox, Phillies, and Royals all rank in the top 10 in runs scored...

and the Astros play 17 games vs. those teams -- between now and September 1st

I think we are fooling ourselves if we think Tuck can save this offense ... someone out of Pena, Singleton, Meyers is gonna have to step up too.

This was an interesting tidbit. In a lineup with Altuve, Bregman, Alvarez, and Diaz (and occasionally when Meyers runs into one), the Astros are 27th in homers since Tucker suffered that leg amputation. There is ZERO power in this lineup and it begins and ends with ZERO pitch selection or plate discipline. They swing at everything, so pitchers have no need to pump strikes across the plate.

This is not a lack of overall talent, it's not just bad luck or bad umpiring, and it's not 29 other teams having Cy Young staffs. As evidenced by the team also being 27th in walks drawn, it is 100% on the big fat ZERO known as Alex Cintron and his moronic philosophy of being overly aggressive.

To make the point even more stark, the team is 3rd in fewest Ks. They can hit, and they make constant contact. It's just a bunch of weak contact because they are swinging at trash.

TLDR- Cintron is going to cost some people their jobs. Why it hasn't already been his is a giant mystery.

I do think we should get a different hitting coach because at some point you need a new message. That said, I also don't think this is just his philosophy. Altuve has always been a free swinger. Bregman doesn't walk anymore and I doubt he listens to a damn thing any hitting coach tells him. Peña has always sucked at hitting and laying off sliders. He just isn't very good. Under no circumstance should he be in your 5 hole. Dubon never had power and Big Jon was a scrap heap pickup because your owner was an idiot. Chas is the only one that is a big wtf happened to this guy but his advanced metrics were always below his production. In hindsight he was probably someone you should have sold high on.

I genuinely believe this has nothing to do with Alex Cintron.

It's just a poorly constructed roster with guys who don't really compliment each other… and frankly half the lineup just isn't very good and the ones that are are pressing.

Since Tucker went down:

  • tied in 10th in Runs
  • last in BB%
  • 7th in K% (7th best)
  • 7th in BA
  • 14th in OBP
  • 16th in SLG
  • 15th in wRC+ (103 - basically average)
  • 22th in Hard Hit %
  • 18th in Barrel %
  • 19th in Exit Velo

How are we 10th in runs yet in the middle of the pack in other key metrics? My guess is - 8th in RE24. We may not always get the hit but we've been doing enough of the little things (believe it or not) to make the most of our opportunities.

I think we have quite a few Astros thread members going to Boston this weekend. Roll Call?

I will be there for all three Friday-Sunday. First time at Fenway and can't wait.
