the Astros went 15-14 in the month of May

the original plan was to play 5 over in May and 5 over in June to reach .500 -- by the end of June

going to need a new plan now

I thought he was going to be an excellent manager. Now we know why he was passed up for so many other jobs.

LOL. He thinks the Astros are playing really good baseball?? I suppose he's just trying to be nice and not hurt the players' feelings. Is that it? Just seems like a braindead comment (again).

40% of your best offense isn't even starting. Make it make sense.

From what I've read: Dubon is too valuable on the bench, and Loperfido doesn't have the back of the baseball card.

Who cares about winning right now… we want to honor the back of the baseball card and hope guys work it out I guess

Well I'm just now realizing it and it all makes sense now.

No balls to stand up to the players
No balls to push back on Dana and Crane
No balls to even speak out to the media

Everything is unicorns and rainbows.

Dusty was stubborn and dumb but at least he had a pair and would speak up and tell everyone to kick rocks.

The next 10 days or so could be interesting. The Mariners schedule is really soft. They may put together an 8-2 type run. I could easily see us 10 games back come the middle of June.

I had said earlier this week or last week that Espada needed to start calling out players or the Front Office but everybody reminded me he's not that type of coach or has the resume to even do that. And it all makes sense now.

Dorn, er, Bergman only seems to hit when he's batting below the 4 spot. Why is that?

Joe Espada needs to stop *****footing around and get in guy's faces.

Or if he's not that guy then 1)limit their playing time and 2)drop them in the order.

Jose Abreu just joined laundry duty. Y'know?

No rookie manager is that kind of coach. Do you know why? Because they all get fired.

I think the poster, along with me is suggesting more in the terms of Espade just needs to show some more emotion and urgency. He's so stoic and calm 24/7 which for baseball is generally a great quality to have, however this team is barely treading water. Granted it's early and still very much in it, but damn I just once want to see him get fired up and at least ruffle some feathers at least once. To me, it at least gives off the impression that each game matters.

I feel like he knows it's a long season and it doesnt think it's necessary but I wanna see it just to even see if it lights a fire under his ass. I played for several coaches in high school and in college who remind me a lot of espeda. Very calm, and collected. However, during a tight game when a call didn't go there way or when they situation called for it they would at least get off there ass and show some emotion with the umpires. Never full blown Aaron Boone meltdowns but you would at least hear it in there tone and reactions they were pissed.

At the current moment I seen espeda as a guy who think these guys are all seasoned pros who will figure it out and turn it around on there own. They may, but a little kick in the ass or ruffling of feathers never hurts just to remind them what's at stake and who is actually in charge. Hell, I do the same things with my kids. I'll whip there ass from time to time for the smallest of things just so they don't get too comfortable and to remember who's in charge (parents). Joe needs to do his own form of ass whipping just to show the guys he's in charge because the way I see it now he's trying to be the good guy/friend and it isn't working.

Just my two cents. Feel free to flame away and let me know I'm wrong.

They have scored 6 runs in those last 5 games. That is the antithesis of "facing good pitching and getting after it". Somebody needs to explain to he and Dana that the idea behind "coach speak" is to say things that are bland and generally positive, but not actually blatantly false. Saying we "got after" the pitchers in the last five days is provably and blatantly false and damages his credibility to expect us to believe it.

They got after the pitchers alright. Didn't work counts leading to walks. Didn't put any pressure on the pitchers because they just swing at everything and aren't patient.

Getting after them isn't good unless you're a good hitter that can do something about that.

Working counts leads to better perception of pitches and better outcomes for the hitters as time goes on.

Absolute mockery of every player in our minor league system to have a player with a sub .300 OPS starting for us. We probably have a dozen minor league infielders who "aren't ready yet" that could do better than that. Just sad that we are floundering in the standings and still trotting him out there to try to save face for Crane's stupidity.

I don't like it at all, and it hurts me to say this, but if this is the way the team is gonna play the rest of the way, they need to just lose as much as possible to make it obvious they need to sell big at the deadline. That means throwing abreu out there every chance they get and keeping Espada all year. The absolute worst thing that could happen is the team is close enough in the playoff race at the deadline too make Crane and the council of assistants to the regional manager think we should either stand pat or acquire players.

We either need to be leading the division or dogcrap last.
MaxPower

Fair enough. If that's not his personality though then it can come across as fake. That may be part of the downside to having promoted him from within. The guys already know what he's like, so if he deviates from that they will see through it.

I think two things can be true. I'd rather have a guy like Tito but I also don't think Joe is our main issue, in part because I think a manager has to be a total screwup to have that much impact. You just have guys having down years and a lot of pitching injuries. It happens. The Rays are having similar challenges after having won 99 games last year.

I don't know about putting your worst players out there but agree 100% the worst case scenario is not selling and missing the playoffs. You can do that with a young team but not an aging one with a lot of guys approaching free agency. This should be a good time to reflect on the long term vision of the org.

Organization needs to set a deadline. If we're X amount of games by XX date, then write off making the playoffs and start setting up for next year (and the years beyond). Maybe they've done that, who knows.

We have some players that could bring in some decent prospects. We have some young minor league players that we need to evaluate at the MLB level. The only players I'm not up for moving are Altuve, Yordan and Pena. Keep Tucker if the intent is to offer him a realistically competitive offer. If not, he'd bring in a load in a trade.
MaxPower
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Completely agree. I want to see if Joey, Cabbage and Leon are big league players. Those 3 should be taking nearly all ABs in LF and 1B (adding in a righty 1B vs lefties would be preferred). Work backwards from there. Who do you need to move to make that happen?

We also have some redundancy in the farm. Joey, Melton and Cole are very similar players. Think you need to move one to help somewhere else. Kind of surprised we haven't done that already.

Me back on May 7:

"Is what we're seeing why it took so long to hire Espada?"

Almost a month later and we may be seeing the answer to my question.
