I don't get the angst of putting him at 1st base immediately to let him get used to it in real time.

1) he's played the position

2) It's not like 1B is super complicated to play like the other infield positions. About 99% of the time the play ends with catching the damn ball. It's just the nature of the position.

3) the decision should compare the relative favorability of our alternative CFs batting vs Singletons, against the value of giving him time to get ready for 1st base. That's an easy decision IMO.

Sounds like what Toronto did with Alek Manoah last year.
Sent him down to their Florida complex where he spent about a month working on everything. Called him back up once he looked better and then he went to AAA to earn his spot back.

Do you think this is the extent of their movement regarding Abreu? I assume he'll be down at least a couple weeks to a month, but I wonder how much his timeline is based on the major league success in the meantime.

The real question is will Abreu actually be able to perform again, ever? The dude is probably going to face dudes throwing just as hard if not harder - given the recent trend in younger pitchers - than the MLB. I don't see him catching up to a FB without a time machine or a visit to the best Miami aging clinic (HGH/Steroids) ever again, but hope I am wrong.

Abreu being willing to make the move is really admirable, it shows he definitely wants to still play instead of just draw a check. But reading between the lines it tells me several things.

1) Brown/Espada have told him, you've had a month, it's not happening, we can't keep trotting you out there when we're trying to get back in this race. So if you want to play here again, go fix it.

2) Alternatively they hold him, we're moving on from you at first base and want to trade you somewhere you can play, but nobody want you the way you're hitting right now, so go to the beach and regain something of a stroke and we'll get you traded.

3) If he can't refind the stroke at all, he can retire quietly and not have to do a dog and pony show up here.

I must admit that I have been puzzled by the unwillingness to play Caratini at 1B when he has plenty of experience there and has played well in his limited playing time.

To me, I understand more the reluctance to DH one of your catchers when only carrying two, but you can always move a 1B behind the plate if needed.

And a backup catcher doesn't need the "time off" from playing the field.

Puzzling to me.

Because he isn't taking time away from anyone in Palm Beach and it's not in a locale where the TV cameras will be on him every day. It's a real chance to get away from the big city and see if there is something left in the tank or not. And quite frankly, he'd probably be overmatched by AAA pitching right now, so there's no point in humiliating the guy.

No I'll will towards Abreu the person. Just sucks he's making 19.5 Mil

If he was making under 10 Mil, it wouldn't be as rough.

Compounding the fact that he makes so much money, is beyond putrid this season, we are 10-29, and he was really bad for 2/3 of last season has just made it a perfect storm of suck

Those answers make sense... I thought there might be some roster/contract manipulation involved.

I've been pretty critical of Abreu but he really does seem like a standup guy and I hope he can figure something out and contribute for another team if possible.

Plus if he's in Palm Beach it's work all day everyday and he avoids the travel the AAA team does.

Plus I hear Bagwell prefers West Palm to Sugarland.

Abreu hit .237 with 18HR and 90RBI last year overall. We were disappointed with that at the time, and he did suck for a big stretch, but how would that look now- like manna from above (haha).
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

If he figures it out and Loperfido is good in center, then we can trade Jake or Chas for some prospects and feel good. I would love for Abreu to force our hand, but it's probably not happening.

I'd take that in a heartbeat right now. The most frustrating thing about him last year was his RBI came in bunches. If you go through the game logs, he'd have like 4 in one game… then go 5 or so games with maybe one. So he'd have 5 RBI in 7 games and it would look great on paper.

But that first 3 months was brutal to watch.

Here's an example of a month stretch for him. I cropped so only the RBI total by game is there.

You know I hate on Abreu but from all reports he's a great guy and a clubhouse leader who absolutely knows and owns that he sucks now. Hard not to feel for the guy
