And guess what will happen to the umpire... not a flipping thing.

I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Yep.

And this series was a microcosm of the season so far.

Friday JV comes out and puts the team on his back going 6 in a strong outing while the offense scores early and lines up the bullpen like we had planned all along. Things were looking up.

Then Saturday happens and the back end blows up losing a late lead and falling in extras again.

Then Sunday comes around and the hapless offense shows up and gets shut down by a guy making his 2nd ML start all while our starter coughs up 3 in the first.

So yeah...One step forward 2 steps back
This was the killer. If Press does his job it takes a lot of the sting out of Sunday. Was hoping to stack series wins heading to the Mexico series against the Rockies.
I know Press is the one who blew it, but Abreu goes out there and puts 2 on with no outs and has to wiggle out of it. Just no one in the back end is holding up their end of the bargain. Montero has been the best bullpen arm so far this season and no one would have expected that development.

Yeah - that's a bad one. Those are situations where the ump should have to issue an apology and pay a fine.

I wouldn't mind for all ejections of someone in the dugout to be reviewed during the game and corrections made if the wrong person was thrown out.

Yep Abreu has had one clean inning all season against Atlanta. He's assumed the role of Heart Attack Hector

I've spent a good time considering the bullpen's woes recently and I've finally pieced it altogether. It's a been of a tale, so be patient.

Rafael Montero somehow acquired the technology to perform a Face/Off heist with Bryan Abreu during the off-season.

It's the only explanation for why Abreu had a 1.72 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP last year while Montero was at 5.08 and 1.53. This year, Montero is at 1.64 and 0.91 while Abreu is at 4.91 and 1.818.

Montero started freaking out in the off-season and while the option to "try harder" and "pitch better" was out there, he decided to use Uncle Crane's dump truck of money to recruit a team to abduct Abreu, knock him out, have the surgery done, and take his body. By the time Abreu recovered it's already been a month and he's having to try to make pitches with Montero's arm and it sucks.

One night, he finally can't take it anymore and tells Ryan Pressly about it, because he's the only guy he trusts.

Pressly, much like Joan Allen, is skeptical, but a DNA/blood test proves it.

Pressly goes to Dana Brown and Jim Crane with the proof and they listen and smile politely, but the minute he's gone they agree he's freaked out and is now a liability to the team.

Three days later, we sign Josh Hader as the new closer.

Astros fans should give J. Abreu the Trea Turner treatment with a standing ovation next time he bats at MMP.

Young 5 tool player still in his prime going through a slump vs "37" year old who has the back of a 60 year old and can't catch up to a 90 MPH fastball

Man, I will never understand why so many of you guys hate our own players. I get being frustrated- I am too. That's an understatement. But when you would rather boo than show support for a player who is clearly lost… that's something I expect in the Bronx. Not Houston.

If it was an effort thing I would be fine with booing. But the guy works his ass off. I genuinely feel bad for him and hate that it's getting close to the end of the leash. I wish it turned out better.

I took some time away from this thread because it was just getting too toxic. Came back and this was the first thing I see. Guess I'll log back off for a while.

To each their own- I'm not trying to be the thread police and I'm not saying what you guys can and can't post. It's just not for me.

Hopefully we get a win streak going soon.

Can we boo Espada for keeping him in the lineup? Brown for not calling up Loperfido? There's got to be somebody that we can boo.

one thing about Pressly that may have been overlooked...

his ERA last year was 3.58

that's not bad, but it's not great or elite

here's the trend:

2021 --> 2.25 ERA
2022 --> 2.98
2023 --> 3.58

an ERA of 4.00 this season would be on trend

Ok so it's a bit of an apple/oranges comparison if you factor in all those things.

I just think it would be cool to see Astros fans do something like that with how much negativity there has been lately. Myself certainly included.

If this is the result of Jose Abreu working his ass off, I shudder to think what will happen when he stops trying.

Hunter Brown might and I say might be a decent 1-2 inning relief guy at best, that dude sucks as a starter.. as do most of the others we are trotting out their right now … gotta get some arms back soon or we will be a bottom feeder this year

The defensive things feel like effort to me (missing pop-ups, missing balls thrown to him). I get he works hard, but the results are consistently not showing any improvement. He's hurting the team on both sides of the ball. If he was getting paid less than $5M per year he'd already be gone. I think there's still a lot of animosity as well from last year from a lot of fans (me included) when he was clearly injured for large chunks of the year, knew he was injured, and refused to admit it and take a break, even while his lack of production was hurting the team. That's selfish, and it wouldn't surprise me if that's happening again.

I feel like we've reached the point where it no longer matters how hard he works or how nice a guy he is. He simply can't get it done in games anymore. Either they need to hide him on the IL or just cut bait and eat the contract. If he's on the bench, there will be a temptation to use him, which will largely be to the detriment of the organization.
MaxPower

I don't think the defense is effort. He was never particularly good so it's natural progression to bad. He doesn't have the quick hand eye coordination anymore to adjust to hot shots and the fly ball would have been routine if he was a little quicker.
