But the bad result was more a result of bad luck...soft contact finding an empty hole vs a bad decision (had he roped one in the gap somewhere)

What the "damn the luck" comments ignore are that JV gave up 3 hits in a row. They just gave up 2nd base after the second single.

He also couldn't put him away with 2 strikes. He fouled off pitches until he put something in play.

yes, you let the veteran try to finish the inning without bringing in a guy to clean up the mess. If it's Arighetti, you pull him...at some point, you have to see if the HOFer is going to have "IT" for the playoffs this year, because as of now, he's not on my playoff roster.

A mental letdown was almost inevitable today. 18th day in a row of games...just finished the 4-game sweep...day off tomorrow. I know they are pros, but also human. I'm guessing we bounce back and take the series (although for some reason, the Reds have had our number in recent years...where's Berkman and Oswalt when we need 'em?)
