I don't really want a guy who gets on base a lot with a mediocre average in the meat of our lineup when we have Yordan and Tucker available who make harder contact at a better clip and dont ground into as many DP's.
Nerds figured out the 2 hole is more important than the 3 hole. As well as the 4 hole too. You actually should prefer the on base guy there.
I'm curious as to how they supported that.
Additionally, I wonder if that would change in a more traditional approach where your leadoff and 2-hole guys were typically guys who didn't have the power but were high BA/OBP and base-stealers who would get on base a lot.

I think it has to do with the #2 hitter getting so many more ABs over the course of a season.

To me, and just my personal opinion, the amount of at bats is marginal between batting 2 and 3. I'd rather 2 be a guy more likely to get on base or advance the runner, and 3 be a reliable run producer. The difference in at bats starts more when you get to 4, 5, and 6. You don't want Tucker, Yordan, Altuve, or June-postseason Bregman batting below 4.Ag_07 said:

I haven't delved into it deeply but it seems the last 15 years or so teams have been better hitting on those top 3 to 5 picks than in years past. Presumably it's much easier to scout them with all the select leagues, national showcases, etc.

Maybe Diaz is on the roster as a lucky charm, but Whitcomb needs to be called up and get his shot
