Not only was Sho clearly betting on baseball he was wearing a buzzer while doing it.

Isn't that how this is supposed to work?

Anthony Rendon's niece confirmed it.

I'm hoping Bregman takes a similar deal to them. 3-4 years at 30M per with an opt out would be perfect

I wonder if the league owners got together and decided Boras had gotten over on them long enough.

My mom's side of the family had a enormous family reunion this weekend, the first once since 1983 to have her and her four sisters, along with all 10 of their kids (me and 9 cousins) - in 41 years. The last time we were all together, the capper of that weekend was a Astros game on July 31, 1983 (one of my aunt's brought original photos with the dates on the back so we were able to piece together what game it was).

Highlights from that day's game:

Astros 9, Reds 2
  • Despite there being 11 runs and 17 hits, the game lasted 2 hours and 17 minutes.
  • Reds' starting lineup: Eddie Milner CF, Dave Concepcion SS, Gary Redus LF, Dan Driessen 1B, Cesar Cedeno RF, Nick Esasky 3B, Ron Oester 2B, Dann Bilaredello C, Bruce Bereyni P.
  • Johnny Bench came in as a defensive replacement late in the game.
  • Astros' starting lineup: Omar Moreno CF, Terry Puhl RF, Dickie Thon SS, Phil Garner 3B, Jose Cruz LF, Ray Knight 1B, Alan Ashy C, Bill Doran 2B, Joe Niekro P.
  • Puhl, Thon, Cruz, and Knight were all hitting over .300.
  • Cruz and Thon both had triples.
  • Niekron went the distance with 9 strikeouts
  • It was 2-1 Astros going to the last of the 7th, then the good guys blew it open with a 2-out, 7-run rally tht went: groundout, walk, sacrifice, double, error, HBP, single, triple, single, double, single.

I think it's more of owners seeing that none of these 10 year deals are working out and they are all hurting franchises from years 6-10 usually. Also I think the idea of the "super team" has been a fail given the Mets and Dodgers postseason success or lack thereof

Yankees pulled it off turn of century. Haven't got the results since.

I think we'll still see the mega deals to the top of the top. Guys like Snell, Monty, Belli, Chapman, Bregman, etc aren't those guys. Tucker just may be tho.

The Mets and Padres might have really helped. Had either of them won a title then all the big market teams would be loading up on those 10 year 400 deals. Thankfully they sucked and none of those moves paid off

SIAP... ESPN power rankings and playoff chances prior to Opening Day:

1. Atlanta Braves
2. Los Angeles Dodgers

3. Houston Astros
  • Projected record: 97-65 (92% playoff odds | 12.4% World Series odds)
  • What has changed most since we saw them last? Did the Astros need to sign the best closer on the free agent market to contend for a World Series spot? The answer is no. They already boasted Ryan Pressly and Bryan Abreu at the back end of their bullpen. But having Josh Hader slinging fastballs in the ninth inning -- with Pressley and Abreu partnering as setup men -- should shorten games for Houston. That is significant for a club that is so unsure about its rotation that it reportedly pursued Blake Snell two weekends before Opening Day. -- Castillo
  • Most likely 2024 award winner: Here are the AL pitchers who have accumulated more bWAR over the past two seasons than Framber Valdez: Shohei Ohtani (now in NL), Gerrit Cole (out for a couple of months), Dylan Case (now NL), Sonny Gray (now NL), Shane McClanahan (out for season) and Justin Verlander (starting season on IL). You can toss Baltimore's Corbin Burnes into the Cy Young mix as well as a new junior circuit member. Still, after Framber's two seasons with just shy of 400 innings and a 128 ERA+, the Cy Young doors are swinging wide open for him as the season dawns. -- Doolittle
  • How they can join the top two: The Astros' starting pitching depth eroded enough this spring that they reportedly considered a late run at Snell, an indication that -- regardless of how menacing their lineup is and how potent their bullpen looks -- there's frailty in their rotation. If Verlander (shoulder discomfort) and Jose Urquidy (forearm strain) are healthy enough to join Valdez, Cristian Javier and Hunter Brown relatively soon, the Astros will once again be an absolute force. If not, their remarkable run of seven consecutive trips to the American League Championship Series will be in serious jeopardy. -- Gonzalez
  • One (realistic) bold prediction: Only five position players have had at least 5.0 bWAR each of the past three seasons, and Kyle Tucker is one of them. This year, Tucker adds to that with his best season yet by posting a career-high 6.8 WAR, going 30/30 for the first time and improving upon last year's fifth-place finish in AL MVP voting. -- Schoenfield

4. Baltimore Orioles
5. Philadelphia Phillies
6. Texas Rangers
7. NY Yankees
8. Tampa Bay Rays

10. Seattle Mariners
24. Los Angeles Angels
30. Oakland A's

If Tucker puts together seasons like '21-'23 or even improves slightly on those numbers over the next two years, he absolutely will be in the mega deal market unless something in the industry majorly changes.

I think the days of giving somebody 30 or older the mega deal are done. Guys like Tucker, Soto and anybody under 26/27 will be the ones that could get them.

What would Alfonso Soriano's big contract be if he played today?

He got 8/$130M at I believe age 30 after he had his 4th 30/30 season which was actually a 40/40 year in 2006.

King Tuck wants what 8/$210M and still hasn't had a 30/30 (although he basically did last year).

The deals guys are getting at age 20/21 for 8 years, $120 suddenly make a lot more sense when you see what the Cabrera and Pujols of the world did to those franchises' payroll in their late 30s

Not even really a press conference. I'm betting he (or more likely his interpreter, agent or lawyer) is going to read a statement.

Yeah, I think teams are starting to take notice about how we and the Braves did it to start where we extended our young guys earlier and then let them walk when they hit free agency. The Braves have obviously done a better job of that but I think about how we extended Bregman and Yordan as examples

How would his interpreter have means and access to steal millions?

That's the big remaining question of HOW did it happen.

That statement pretty much put it all out there. Any lies he may have just told would be pretty easily figured out in due course. He came across as believable and perhaps a little naive and too trusting.

He's pulling a Sammy Sosa. When things went south for Sammy with steroids he basically forgot how to speak English. And that cut off Q&A.
I mean we are talking about his interpreter so his ability to speak English should already be limited

Interpreter is fully under the bus at this point. I see 3 options, ranked from most to least likely:

1a. (45%) Ohtani is a lying scumbag and has now falsely accused someone he counted as a friend 10 minutes ago.
1b. (45%) Interpreter is handsomely rewarded to fall on the sword and face the music.
3. (10%) Ohtani is really innocent and very naive and was played by his friend.

Its really not hard to figure out how the wire was sent and who did it. I'm really starting to believe they don't want anyone to know because its going to look horrible (e.g. Shohei pulled the trigger). Sending wires is kind of a pain, intentionally so.
