Who's the backup if Abreu isn't ready opening day? I'm guessing Singleton?

-Hensley (10 AAA, 5 MLB at 1B)
-Loperfido (19 A+/AA/AAA at 1B)
-Dubon (2 games at 1B)

Knee soreness. Given his age I wouldn't rule out them taking it very slow

He was running after a popup in foul territory and kinda stepped awkwardly on the bullpen mound.

Spring training has flipped my view on extending Valdez, Bregman, and Tucker.

Do it. Do it now, and do all three.

Squeeze every ounce out of this run, because the next phase will be UGLY. There is not nearly enough talent remaining to reload.

Yeah, most of the talent is in the lower levels of the minors. There's some guys down there who they think very highly of.

As far as AAA talent goes, you're mostly right. I think Loperfido is likely going to be a nice player- but other than that, they lack guys with truly high upside. Will Wagner is a decent player- but his most likely outcome is a utility infielder who will come off the bench. Some in the organization really like Dezenzo and he certainly has potential to be a good player, but he has a ways to go in a few areas. They're also pretty split on Jacob Melton. Some think he has 30/30 potential and others don't see the swing and miss going away. Kennedy Corona is elite defensively- but there's holes in his swing. On the pitching side, you have guys like Arrihgetti who has good stuff but will never be an ace. I see a solid #3 type of guy if things pan out. Gordon and Kouba are other guys who may contribute at some point but I don't see them ever being anything more than an average major leaguer at best.

This is a big reason why the Astros seriously considered moving Bregman over the offseason. I don't know what kind of prospects they could have landed since he only had one year left- but the plan was to move him for near major league ready prospects and sign Matt Chapman to play third this year.

The lower levels have a lot more guys with higher upside. Luiz Baez, Miguel Palma, Kenni Gomez are all kids who truly have superstar type talent.. but when you're talking about 18-21 year olds, there's really such a wide range of outcomes that it's difficult to project.

The lack of high upside guys in the minors is a big reason the Astros drafted the way they did last year. Brice Matthews (1st round pick) is one of the more raw players I can remember coming out of college. He's one of those guys who will either turn out to be an all-star caliber shortstop in the big leagues or never make the big leagues at all. Alonzo Treadwell (2nd round pick) is similar as well. He has all the potential in the world- but he's incredibly raw and there's no outcome that would surprise me. They're very high on a couple of the high school kids they drafted- but again, they're so young and difficult to project.

Not all of these guys will hit- in fact, most won't ever make it to the big leagues at all. But if you can hit on just a couple of them, that changes things in a major way.

Pretty much aligns with my understanding. I wonder if they will look into trading Framber or Tuck this offseason if they can't extend them. Framber specifically may make sense if JV is back and Garcia and LMC prove healthy when they come back.

Yikes for Gerrit. Hopefully noting serious for him personally.

I know I probably feel differently than most of yall on here, but aside from the hat issue after the WS loss, I don't have much ill will toward Gerrit. I think dude is a baller and I'd take him back in a heart beat.

I don't dislike him either. But I actually think this year's Yankee team could be salty … but not if they lose him

SIAP

Astros in ESPN's Top 100 players for 2024 (tied with Atlanta for the most with 8 total):
8. Alvarez
26. Altuve
28. Tucker
49. Bregman
50. Verlander
56. Valdez
61. Hader
88. Pena

Missed the cut but noted by one writer as deserving- Diaz

Seattle has three starters in the top 62, wow.

Others of note:
34. Adolis Garcia- LOL at the recency bias
45. Yamamoto- that's some major league projection
57. Cease- there's still time, Crane!
59. Snell- homeless
63. Montgomery- homeless
78. Correa

My feelings about Cole ... Loved him from 2018-2019 and thought that two year run was so incredible to watch. If Hinch had put him in at the top of the 7th with a 2-0 lead in game 7 then he'd be an absolute Houston legend.

Mad that he went to the Yankees but not mad that he did what was best for him. Hate the Yankees, indifferent now towards Cole.

Still a great pitcher but he's been a bit of a whiny *****. From the spyder tack to the getting into with batters showing him up to dealing with the NY media.

The Yankees won't give 2 ****s about paying Snell and going into the deeper end of the CBT pool.

But what if that were us? Hypothetically, suppose JV was the one getting that MRI and it came up with a torn UCL and another TJ surgery. Would Crane do this and sign Snell? Or would he stay pat and roll out a kid?

I'm guessing he stays with the hand he has and waits until late June to see what happens.

That's a very interesting question.

Some comparable times was when Framber broke his finger & Graveman was done for the year. We signed Odo & Hader, quickly after. Maybe Crane would spend. I kind of like our pitching depth more than theirs. That unloaded some key arms to get Soto.

It wasn't that he left for the Yanks that pissed me off. It was the way he left.

How 30-seconds after we lost game 7 he wouldn't wear an Astros hat for post-game stuff and was basically out the door already and been an ass about it.

We get it, you're pissed that Hinch didn't put you in to close out the game on short-rest. That's fine and acceptable because I think a lot of us wanted that but it was a tactical error and nothing personal towards him. But Cole couldn't take a day or two to commiserate with his Astros teammates or at least until the post-game stuff was over.

And then his whiny behavior since being in NYC has been almost insufferable.

Good question, and I'd be fine with Crane not going and getting Snell.

There are serious concerns wrt Snell, and he absolutely is not the sure-fire top of the rotation guy that deserves to get top-end $$$ IMO. He doesn't go deep in games, he walks a lot of batters, and he has been fairly inconsistent over his career. He is a big gamble for franchises that can't afford to give a massive contract to and have him be a bust.
