Bet this guy gets signed pretty quick
Struck out 26 times in 53 at-bats for the Angels last year and he'll be 27 on May 3.

At all levels since age 18, he's struck out 37% of the time.

Cabbage may have some power, but his whiff rate looks like a rotten tomato, and I just feel like you'd be in a real pickle signing him if you want my honest onion.

No. Our next FA is coming in the next offseason.

I'd love Soler but if we don't make another move I think we're okay.

Bench bat rental might be needed at deadline though depending on how healthy our lineup is

If he turns out good, this is a great deal for them. Even if he's just above average. It looks like it maxes out at 9/64 M.

If he turns out to be really good he will probably hate that he signed this around the third year of arbitration (6-7 years from now). But I'm trying to imagine my 22 year old self turning this down.

What does Soler provide that we don't already have? This is not meant to be a snarky question, b/c I don't know much about him

He's a pretty good hitter. He was elite in 2019 and really good last year. He's a righty though, and terrible baserunning and fielding

Insane power. He'd be the guy you put in against a lefty for Meyers in the 8th or 9th if you need a run.

Plus given our injury history with certain guys (Yordan) he's a great depth bat that most pitchers would be uneasy pitching to at the Crawford boxes

Except Jake is really good against lefties. And why is Soler on the bench? Hes going to be making 15 M per year for multiple years. That's not a regular on the bench.

I'd rather him be the DH with Yordan in left, Chas in CF but it's come out that Yordan will be DH a lot

Right so either way Soler would start most games. You sacrifice D in LF and CF and still have a hole vs RHP. It's very likely still a clear upgrade overall, but it seems inefficient to me. Just add a cheaper lefty who plays part time.

The fact that he bats RH is what made me ask the question. He probably is an upgrade at the plate over Meyers, even against righties. Weighing that against defense is always a good debate.

I think if you were to look to the future and ask this thread in October would you rather have a solid OF defensive option (Jake) or a 30-40 HR bat in the ALCS…. I think we'd all say take the bat and put Yordan in left.

Also let's not act like Meyers is a gold glover out there.

I might be wrong but I think this combo

RF - Tucker
CF - McCormick
LF - Alvarez
DH - Soler

Is better than the current combo below when it comes to trying to win a title

RF - Tucker
CF - Meyers
LF - McCormick
DH - Yordan

Soler is entering year 11 and he's topped 30 HR twice. His 3 year zips projection doesn't showing him topping 30 HR. Hes a 7.4 WAR player for his career and topped 2 WAR only once in a season. I think your projection is on the high end.

While Jake hasn't won a gold glove, he is an elite defender in CF. He's better than Tucker or Dubon who've actually won gold gloves.

My argument isn't that Jake is better than Soler. It's that he is an inefficient way to spend 40-50 M.

That is what it's going to boil down to. If you can get him at good value, he probably is going to be a better performer than Meyers.

If not, Meyers in the 9 hole is acceptable.

One last thought about a guy like Soler, though. If you don't think Pena is going to hit a little better than last year, how comfortable are you with two average to below average hitters back to back in 8-9 spots?

Assuming decent health and meeting reasonable expectations for everyone else, then it's fine. We should have a top 4-5 offense with both in the lineup. Both play high level defense at key positions. Plus, I think Jake is going to somewhat of a platoon player.
redline248
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I think Pena's defense is more critical than Meyers's, so I mostly meant if he's not gonna hit I'd prefer an upgrade for Meyers.

In terms of platoon, Jake rotating in and out with Chas...and Yordan in LF on occasion? Or are you factoring in some other player in a Julks role (with way fewer starts than last year)?
Beat40
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think Jake getting more regular playing time and used correctly, he's going to produce fairly nicely. As long as he and Chas can combine for 25+ HR from the CF position, we're good. I think that will happen with both getting more regular playing time and not worrying about if they'll be treated fairly or not.

He's a redundancy for the 25-40 games Yordan is going to miss injured.

Are we still discussing a platoon of Chas and Jake in center? We've had that for 3 seasons now and it's become very clear Chas is way better.

I'd even put Dubon over Jake in CF

Chas will play a lot of LF when Yordan is DHing. Jake will play CF in that scenario quite a bit.

I think Yordan is going to play full time with a 75/25 DH/LF split.

I think Chas is going to play full time with a 75/25 LF/CF split.

I think Jake plays 75% in CF and 25% on the bench. Of that 75%, it's going to vs LHP as much as possibly. Of that 25%, it's going to when a RHP starts as much as possibly.

That leaves 25% at DH for guys to rest and play match ups.

Not a true platoon, but used in a way that puts Jake in a position to succeed.

Just FYI I used simple quarters in this discussion. Idk what it will or should be.

Another X-factor to keep in mind is that Maldonado started an obscene number of games in recent years.

I would not be surprised if Yainer only catches 65-70% of games and DHs the majority of the others.

While Caritini may not be a strong bat, it can also give you a chance to get Caritini in against RHP to gain another lefty in the lineup while loading up Meyers starts with a LHP on the mound.

I am thinking Meyers starts are closer to 50% than 75%.

And I still wouldn't mind a Duvall signing if it is cheaper. Unlike Soler that is another DH/sub-par LF, Duvall can play a legit LF while Chas plays CF. Meyers can start against LHP and take Duvall back out. Duvall off the bench is also helpful because he is platoon neutral.

In last year's regular season, starts in CF were Meyers 87 games (54%), Chaz 51 games (31%), and Dubon 24 games (15%).

In the 11 playoff games, it was Dubon 6 games (55%) and Chaz 5 games (45%).

That's insane. I'll never get over letting a guy with a 133 wRC+ ride the pine. He could have put up a 5 WAR season if he's the everyday CF.
