Interesting..

Hmmm…I'd certainly consider it. Framber is a big reason our season last year was frustrating and I'm not sure if he'll turn it around

He was also our best pitcher by far, an all star, threw a no hitter, had a 4+ WAR, & finished 9th in the Cy Young.

Due to a strong first half

He lost it, especially in the playoffs

Look, he's had a lot of success with the Astros and still has top tier stats overall for his career. I'm not suggesting we get rid of him, but for the right package it should be worth considering. We have decently strong pitching depth.

That is quite the drop by Framber, Javier and JV.

JV is understandable due to age. But we need Framber and Javier to go back to 2022 versions of themselves

This also has some wild picks. Yamamoto at 3 already? Woo & Bello on it? lol Scherzer made it? Glass Glasnow that high?

In the comments he says the 2nd Snell should be Jason Steele. Said it was a typo

Tortured myself by rewatching the ALCS highlights this morning, really for the first time since it happened.

Two months later it's even more frustrating given the amount of opportunities we had to win in games 1 and 2. But it did give me hope because we should be returning a better team this year, and we likely wouldn't have to face Montgomery again who IMO was the difference in the series given how he shut us out game 1.

I think we make the ALCS again in 24 but this time we face Baltimore.

Matt Carpenter is a lefty who can play first base and corner outfield. Gets on base. He's definitely past his prime at 37 but will likely be cheap. Worth a flyer?

He was traded to Atlanta yesterday. You think we'd want trade for him?

Top available free agents and their market value. There's a few under $10M that I'd take

Brandon Belt for a platoon bat to pair with Abreu would be nice for that cheap.

ATL is just looking to flip him. They have done it a few times already. Target someone. Give up peanuts. Take on a bad deal. Move the bad deal away.

As for Carpenter... I wouldn't expect much. He's 38. He hasn't exactly hit righties all that well except for the weird 2022 season where he was an MVP-level hitter in small bursts. He's more of a DH at this point in his career.

Just an FYI, its a little asier to go through Fangraphs FA Tracker than Spotrac.

https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/free-agent-tracker?&sign=unsigned

.

While its not a market value calculation, they do have crowdsourced projections (usually under actual)

I'd love to have him back too but he seems to be at the end of the line. I doubt he'd make it for 80 games.

the Maldy at-bat in the 4th inning of game 1 with the bases loaded...was a killer

it was the key AB in the game for the 'stros

I wouldn't mind Enrique Hernandez. He'd be another Doobie, but would give give more IF/OF flexibility.

On 3 straight fastballs too when everybody in the stadium knew all he'd see were fastballs

Quote:

The Houston Astros don't plan to trade co-ace Framber Valdez, at least not this winter, but they are listening, with more than five teams already checking in on him.

This is what Ohtani passed up on by not waiting. He could have gotten a 300 M dollar deal with an opt out halfway thru only to get a 700 M deal after.

It's just so rare someone so good hits the market at 25.

If Monty goes to a non Arlington team, their pitching rotation is one that's going to put them in a giant hole.

14 M a year. About what you expect for a guy who's usually around 2 WAR. Mildly above Avg bat with sub par defense and base running.

Giants are an interesting comparison for our future. Thats a team that long resisted the monster deal in spite of being a big market club. They somehow won 107 games in 2022 with a bunch of aging stars who were nearing (or past) their primes and a bunch of prospects that were not well regarded stepping up (Yaz, Wade, Webb). Since then they have floundered in mediocrity and are now willing to throw 12 year deals out to free agents. I wonder what Crane will think of resisting a long term deal with Tucker when in 2026 we have a lineup of old Altuve, Yordan and a bunch of slappy Pena types.
