If '22 Postseason Framber had shown up this year Astros would've coasted to the WS. It's a good bet that he can get back to that form. But it'll take some work, not just on physical rest and recovery, but also mentally.

I'm not sure if I have bad news for you or if that just a really untasteful response.

I think he's saying he'd rather have a corpse than ausmus

Today's Topic - Deals that Didn't Get Made

George Springer
I don't think there was ever any real effort to keep George. He was going to go where the most money was and the Astros had ideas on keeping Verlander, Correa, Altuve, McCullers, & extending some young guys (ended up being Javier and Alvarez. )

Contract: 6 year / 150 M

WAR: 2.5, 4.3, 2.2 = 9.0
wRC+: 140, 133, 104 = 122
Games Played: 78, 133, 154 = 365

8.33 M per 1 WAR
205K per game

Conclusion: After an injury in 2021, George has been relatively healthy. However, his age 33 season saw a sharp decline in his offense (power). With 3 more years at age 34, 35, & 36 I have a very hard time seeing this contract being viewed as a good signing, especially with the relative lack of team success & the lessening likelihood of George ever playing at or near prime levels.

Starling Marte
After losing the 2021 World Series, Crane wanted a splash signing. Click couldn't/wouldn't pull the trigger. I don't think we ever got details on what our offer was, but if memory serves we weren't interested in a 4th year.

Contract: 4 years / 78 M

WAR: 2.9, -0.3 = 2.6
wRC+: 134, 76 = 111
Games Played: 118, 86 = 204

15.0 M per 1 WAR
191K per game

Conclusion: Marte fell off a cliff in 2023, just like the Mets did as a team. His stats across the board have tanked with the exception of arm strength. In 2022 we wanted a CF yet Marte can no longer field the position. We dodged a bullet avoiding this signing.

Carlos Correa
What a strange road Corra has had since leaving Houston. Crane tried to extend him with a public offer of 5/160 M. Some believe privately much more was discussed. He still left with more money even after the SF & NY debacles.

Contract: 3 Years / 105 M (opted out after 1), 6 Uears / 200 M (4 vesting years after)

WAR: 4.4, 1.1 = 5.5
wRC+: 140, 96 = 118
Games Played: 136, 135 = 271

12.4 M per 1 WAR
252 K per game

Conclusion: Similar to Springer and Marte, this past season saw a decline. He's entering his age 29 season so it's more realistic that he has a few more years at prime-level play. However, the health concerns of his past and the failed physicals make this contract a little scary.

These are the 3 that came to mind. I am sure there are more. If anyone is interested, throw some more out there are I will take a look. The common theme is that the Astros have avoided some terrible contracts in the past. The 2022/23 offseason looks to have bucked the trend.

That's baseball, though.....

If it was 2022 playoff Pena we probably coast through as well....or if it was just a fraction of the production as 2023 regular season Tucker....

Why I always find the who do you want to face/are scared to face posts funny. A month ago the Braves were as unstoppable of a team we've ever seen, might as well give them the trophy. A week ago the Phillies were a team of destiny and the ALCS was just a battle to see who gets second place....

With all the talk about the mental makeup of some on this team (Framber and others) maybe we should make an all time crazy Astros team.

At the top of the list have to be:

Derek "Operation Shutdown" Bell
Carl "the dinosaur killer" Everett

Add in Jeffery "don't call me Jeff" Leonard and that's your starting OF.

Yall don't think Espada wasn't involved?

Besides everyone hates still always. Embrace the hate. Be the heel everyone wants us to be.

If Beltran were deemed to the best candidate I'd have no problem with it. I'd surely take him over Ausmus

Blummer is going to be a successful head coach someday if he goes that route. He's an expressed an interest in pursuing that path.

I'm not advocating for him here. I want Espada. Just saying I think Blum has great potential as a head coach on some level. Likely college.

Yeah Blum seems too laid back and content with watching from the booth. I get the sense he enjoys being a fan nowadays.

I could see him eventually being a college coach though. He'd be a helluva a recruiter.

I don't know what he makes. But if it's decent, no way in hell I give up that potential job for life to enter the coaching grind where everyone eventually fails.

Contreras

Willson Contreras
To refresh everyone, James Click has agreed to trade Jose Urqidy for Willson Contreras. Dusty went to Crane and got it vetoed. Later, we ended up going and getting Christian Vazquez, another rental for a lower cost.

Firstly, let's compare the #s.

Contreras: 124 wRC+ (2nd Half), +1 Fielding Run Value (full season - can get a partial here)
Vazquez: 67 wRC+, +1 FRV
Maldonado: 85 wRC+, +2 FRV

Fielding Run Value covers blocking, throwing, and framing for catchers.

Contreras in a landslide. All 3 graded out pretty evenly defensively. I think most believe Contreras to be a step below the others, especially when it comes to handling pitchers. There were rumors that Contreras was calling pitches that his pitcher didn't even throw this season with the Cardinals. Oof!

Since this was a trade offer, this is what we would have given up.

3.5 seasons of Jose Urquidy
2022: 1.0 WAR (assume about 0.4 for the 2nd half), 3.75 ERA
2023: 0.2 WAR, 5.26 ERA
2024+2025: TBD

I love Jose but he's kind of just another guy.

Conclusion: This one is the hardest to peg. Clearly, Contreras would have helped the offense. But as we saw with Vazquez, his time behind the plate would have been minimal with Dusty running the show. That may have been a good thing if Contreras didn't put the time in the learn the pitchers. However, Contreras could have helped fill the DH role with Yordan in LF. The production from Diaz & Mancini was pretty weak in the 2nd half and postseason. 3.5 years of any big leaguer is worth something. Even if Urquidy is just a 5th starter/swing starter he's probably worth more than 0.5 years of a good, not great DH. In the end, we won the WS. Results trump all in this case. I am glad this deal didn't get made, but if we didn't win it all, I think my feelings would be different.

This part is factual. A lot of people who hate the Astros now are just jealous/tired of the success. That will never go away and it's not really worth any concern.
