Reading comments from Perez makes me think coming back as a reliever won't be an option. He said something to the effect of "I'm a starter and the Rangers know I'm a starter, but I'll do whatever to help the team." Now that's fine when you're under contract and don't really have an options, but that doesn't at all sound like a guy who wants to come back in a long relief role. Just throwing that out there.
Thanks.

His historical relationship with the org... last year getting married and having a kid, seemed to suggest he would want to stay with Texas. I don't think there is a rotation spot for him, so if he is set to be a SP, he won't be back.

I think he could command a decent contract as a SP. Guys like him get 3-4yrs and $12-15/yr pretty routinely.

I don't blame him.

Texas isn't going to sign Perez to a multi-year bullpen deal.

Perez will get a deal as a starter somewhere. Only way it is in Texas is if we strikeout with Montgomery and don't feel great about our chances of filling out a rotation and bite the bullet on Perez being our #5.
I agree. Only way Perez ends back in Arlington is a RP. No way we take him as a SP. We don't need him for what he can get elsewhere. It isn't a big enough need for Texas to invest long-term in him.

Montgomery would be nice, although, if Heaney decides to stay, how do you shuffle?! I'd trade Gray.

As I noted above... adding some peripheral info:
Scherzer (38): 8GS, 45.0 IP, 3.20 ERA <- 1yr $43M, FA after 2024
Dunning (28): 26GS, 172.2 IP, 3.70 ERA <- 3 yrs of Arb ahead.
Gray (31): 29 GS, 157.1 IP, 4.12 ERA <- 2 more yrs at $13M per
Heaney (32): 28GS, 147.1 IP, 4.15 ERA <- Asssume he takes the Option
Eovaldi (33): 25GS, 144.0 IP, 3.62 ERA <- $17M with vesting (300IP in '23+'24) for 2025. He has 144IP.

Bradford (5.30) is 25 and looks ready to contribute.

For 2024 my 5 are in order:
Scherzer
Eovaldi
Dunning
Gray
Heaney

You are returning 4 guys (Dunning, Gray, Heaney, Eovaldi) who filled 108 GS of 129 possible GSs. Bradford and Scherzer added 16, which comes to about 126GS.

I like the idea of returning Montgomery. More of a Want than a Need. Maybe Heaney doesn't take his Player Option for 2024.

I've always liked the idea of using your #5 as a place for development. Dunning this past year, Bradford\White in 2024. I wouldn't be surprised to see CY sign a couple retreads to minor league deals and watch them through Spring Training. I'm also a fan of keeping your powder dry for trade-deadline addition.

For 2024, we're looking at the 5 returning pieces with these currently on the 40:
Bradford (25)
Owen White (24)
Cole Winn (23) <- Showed nothing this year

We'll have to figure out these Rule V after this season
Dugger (27-AAA): 29G, 4.31, 146.1, 143 SO
Leiter (23): 4.13 ERA in Aug+Sept @AAA

Others (not Rule V until after 2024):
Dane Acker (24-AA): 12GS, 2.74 ERA, 46.0 IP, 51 SO

And then they say stuff like "muh trash cans…." as if the whole cheating scandal happened a century ago and isn't still totally relevant. Lost a lot of respect for Stros fans back then. Do other teams try to steal signs? Yeah sure, but turns out there's a difference between trying to mentally count cards at a blackjack table in Vegas and the alternative of having a systematic Mafia-like approach to counting cards in a casino with dealers on the take, hidden spy cams, etc. The fact that even had to be explained back then and to this day is mind numbing. Yeah, so go have some more postseason success…and no one outside of Houston will care or respect it. You're still Germany status post WWII for another decade or so.

Doesn't TB crush lefties? Although I guess it helps that they're without wander Franco. Hopefully we can keep Paredes and Arozarena in check this series.

Last series we played Tampa, they had been killing LHP...

For September: Info against LHP all pitchers
.375 Harold Ramirez DH (21G 64AB)
.345 Diaz 1B (24G 84 AB)
.318 J Lowe RF (24G 88 AB)
.228 Pinto C (20G 57 AB)
.221 Paredaes 3B (23G 86 AB)
.216 Arozarena LF (23G 88 AB)
.204 Aranda 2B (21G 54 AB)
.158 Basabe SS (15G 38 AB) / .214 Caminero (6G 28 AB)
.347 Margot CF (13G 49 AB) / .258 Siri CF (8G 31 AB)

Remember they lost Wander Franco (SS) to legal issues
Brandon Lowe (2B) is gone due to a patella fracture.
Jose Sire (CF) out with a broken hand
Luke Raley out with a cervical strain. Not sure game availability

Their SP has been through as much as ours has.

ETA: I thought those numbers were just LHP... but it is against al pitchers. At MLB, I can't designate LHP and Sept.

The baylor of mlb fans

With this fanbase their teams success isn't appreciated for much more than a vehicle to taunt another teams fanbase. It's a chance to post T&A pics that arent tolerated on other threads, make up stupid geography references & even more stupid nicknames of other teams, to refer to yourself as "daddy" when talking to a full grown adult, to trash the manager who brought them their only legitimate WSC, etc, etc, etc.

IOW - trash...

MLB needs to outlaw the strike zone graphic on TV networks. Let the umpires call strikes, force hitters to adjust. MLB can show the umpires after the game their performance so they know what pitches were missed.

Increase the width of the plate to protect pitcher arms. Every pitcher in MLB shouldn't be destined for TJ surgery. Pitchers shouldn't be required to throw 99 with a sweeping slider to get batters out.

I'll watch a game and every time a strike gets called on the edge of the zone, the batter turns around and asks the umpire "Is that the edge?"

How are you expecting a wider zone to save a pitcher's arm? Just give them more of those closer calls to save on the number of pitches?

I'd think it would get hitters swinging at more pitches.

Yeah, I guess in theory it could help. But I think you'll just run into the same issues of pitchers trying to nibble the edges.

Honestly what is fueling the high number of TJ is the current emphasis coaches, pitchers, training staff, etc puts on the extremely high velo, max effort every pitch, and the chase for increased spin rate and the torque it produces on the elbows.

Yes, correct. Plenty of runs get scored. Take the game back where 92 is a perfectly acceptable fastball.

MLB should ask itself if Greg Maddux and Mariano Rivera could still be effective in today's baseball. If the answer is no, they should figure out how to make it so.

Bigger strike zone would speed up the game, which could let them eliminate my most hated rule, which is the 3-batter minimum.

Houston is one series away from 7 straight ALCS appearances. NYY never did that nor did anyone else. I'm glad Texas made it in and I hope you guys sweep the Rays and the Orioles and let's play 7 back here in Texas. Let's shift the focus of MLB to the Lone Star state. We will still get the early game unless the LADS and Braves are eliminated in their first round.
