Great win! First stress-free game in a long time. Let's get the sweep tomorrow with Scherzer!

That bat and pure speed will help him progress quickly through the minors. The quick, compact swing was fun to watch in the CWS and the power he's able to generate is incredible

Also, Cole Ragans threw 6 shut out innings with 8 Ks for KC tonight. Hated losing him but Chapman was needed to stabilize the pen

Man, I wish Bochy was 10 years younger. Such a professional manager who seems like a good guy to boot.

Would love to have had him here for a long time as opposed to the 2-3 years we'll get him for

At least he's pitching for a bad team who won't be good again for awhile. Hopefully he can throw 2 gems against the Astros in September for us.

Tampa may be in trouble. Mcclanahan left game early with fore arm tightness today

They should've gotten Perez.

The sad part is, I just don't know if a team like the RedSox can pass them to bump them from the playoffs.

I know it's not our focus because we've been in first place nearly all season long, but the wins against the white Sox have helped us in any possible wild card races because

The Yankees have been playing the rays

The orioles have been playing the jays

Each win we get guarantees we gain ground on 2 of those teams.

We could be a week or two away from starting to track thr "magic number" for Texas, Baltimore, Tampa, and Houston. I think those 4 teams are likely pretty close to being a lock for the playoffs.

It is hard to see how NYY and Boston make the playoffs. While statistically possible... highly unlikely

Mcclanahan might be messed up again. I wouldn't count the rays as safe yet.

I kinda wish we would send Duran down. He just looks lost. I know it sounds crazy because during the first half of the season, I felt like he should've received consideration for an all star spot.

He needs to make some adjustments. Pitchers seemingly throw him nothing but sliders low and away until he gets himself out.

Huff had 3 hits last night. Maybe I was too hard on him after the San Diego series, but he had some ungodly ugly at bats against the padres.

When you look at the standings, it is mathematically possible that they miss the playoffs... but it is highly unlikely.

They have been terrible for awhile and I've posted their pitching perils. McClanahan was out before the ASB with back issues and I think some concern was how he'd compensate or adjust... which is when you get into more catastrophic injuries.

Eflin had an MRI last week on his oft-injured knee. Came back clean. We'll see how he is.

They just went 2-1 @ Houston and then 2-1 @ NYY. 8-10 since the ASB. Remember when the TDS (Team Down South) said our sweep of Tampa was against a weak team?

WC1: Tampa (66-45) <- 51 Games left
WC2: Houston (62-47)
WC3: Toronto (60-49)
1Out: Boston (57-51) <- 54 Games left
2Out: NYY (56-52)

Boston has to win 9 more games than Tampa.

At 8-10 (44.4% Win), if Tampa played at the same level (44% W), they'd go 22-29 and be 88-74.

In order for Boston to match them, they'd have to go 31-23.

TL DR
If Tampa went 22-29, Boston would have to go 31-23 to catch them.

Next up for Tampa: @ Det (3) 48-60, v StL (3) 48-61, v 3 Cle (3) 53-56

Pretty cool graphic illustrating the projected impact to team WAR for the rest of the season based on their respective acquisitions. Rangers are at the top of the list with a projected 2+ increase in WAR.

I think we've already gotten those 2Ws with Heaney & Dunning.

Or was that Seager, last night?!

Still going to be a question about who makes the rotation.

Bochy says Perez is moving to long relief role

I'm good with that move. Don't pitch Heaney less if he is doing well just because we may have to pay him more later. Win games.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agreed.

The idea of the incentive is to reward good performance, not limit your costs.

Perez should not be rewarded to stay in the rotation because he can't be an effective RP.

IP/GS:
6.1 Eovaldi (2.69 ERA)
5.2 Montgomery* (3.42)
5.2 Scherzer (4.01)
5.2 Gray (3.66)
5.2 Dunning (3.43)
5.1 Perez* (4.98)
5.0 Heaney* (4.36)

I think most of the rotation is going to get you 6.0 IP and keep you in the game.

If when Eovaldi returns Dunning and Heaney have continued to perform, I would expect Dunning to get bumped.

You don't see any scenario where we go to a 6 man rotation? Eovaldi obviously needs the rest and Scherzer is 39.

Dunning has earned a spot in this rotation for the rest of the year, IMO.

Definitely think Perez is the one that has to go, but not sure what long-relief really means for him. He's not a bridge-the-gap guy... So he's effectively a mop-up, emergency starter now.

And as another poster has said multiple times -- kudos to the front office for only committing to a 1 year deal with him and not being swayed by the anomaly last season was.

I agree, Dunning has earned his spot as a starter. To me, the team needs to decide if they want his stability in the rotation or in the Pen. I would choose Dunning in the rotation and move Heaney to the pen, mainly because Heaney has history going back and forth.

I could see Perez doing well in a situation where a starter has a rough outing and he needs to come in and get us 3-4 innings. The move may also put a little fire in him to get back to hitting the strike zone more consistently instead of nibbling like he has been.
MrCoachEricTaylor
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Maybe he'll come in in blow outs to save a shorter BP arm. Or he'll get starts in those "Bullpen games" where we would see Bradford.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I wouldn't have a problem with it. I think LAAA has officially gone to one (IIRC, could be someone else I'm thinking). Someone has announced since the ASB.

It just doesn't register with me. I wouldn't mind seeing a 5 man rotation and then Dunning inserted to skip a starter giving each of the 5 a day off.

Counting today, there are 28 days left in August and we have 3 days off. 25 games in 28 days. That's a day off about every 8 days. 2 days off in Sept.

We have in August:
7G and off on the 10th.
6G and day off on 17th
4G and day off on 23rd.

A little extra rest would be great. Dunning is likely a RP in the playoffs. We need a RH RP. I'd want him coming in during game a couple times to adjust.

Scherzer, Eovaldi, and Montgomery are my 1-2-3. Gray the #4 if/when needed.
