That is correct. They trade a Player To Be Named Later that is the draft pick or some other players equivalent to the pick as insurance against catastrophic injury.

Doesn't work like that with players you just drafted. They can't be included in a trade until after the WS. Including as a PTBNL

Pretty sure Langford can't be traded. Even if he could, that would be colossally stupid to trade your most recent 1st round draft pick that plays at a major position of need and *should* be ready to contribute to the MLB club in 2024
They can do a PTBNL. I don't think the position really matters. They're not counting on him to be the opening day starter next season. A lot can change before that guy gets to the show.
You used to be able to take up to 6 months for a PTBNL. It was the work around for new draft picks who couldn't be traded inside a year. So, at the 6 month time, they'd be able.

With the new CBA, new drafts can be traded after the WS, I believe, but can't be a PTBNL like they used.
