Im not saying this was the strategy, but we knew we were limited on bonus pool money coming into the draft, so maybe they are just reaching on guys they think might have some upside just from a stuff perspective.

My only thought is that Langford was considered a signing issue who wants above slot.which is why he dropped to us, and we're picking guys higher than expected after getting agreement that we'll sign them well below slot.

This is what I assume is happening

It's one of the issues of spending a ton in free agency. You not only lose picks but you lose bonus pool money, which makes signing players more of an issue.

Are there signability concerns with Langford? Is he a RS Soph or a junior?

I would say if there were concerns, we shouldn't be now, based on the players we have drafted today haha.

I know that is the Conventional wisdom, because many teams will draft a 2nd Rd guy that might have been a 3rd or 4th.

The reality is, where would these players go otherwise. Indy ball? Sure, it'd look terrible for the Rangers to not have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Rder...but we don't have to sign a 2nd and 3rd and shouldn't have to worry about the Pool money.

If you tell Langford, "This is slot, take it or go back to the Gators," he'll have some serious consideration.

If he goes Independent, there is signficant risk to that, as well. It worked for Rocker Kumar, I suppose, and with Langford not being a P means less risk for him.

But, I'm just not good with the idea of sandbagging picks.

Florida's website says that he's a junior, but he didn't play almost at all as a freshman, so I'm not sure where that is coming from. I just think he wants money that fits what his slot likely was (3), and that we didn't have a ton of money to spend in general. It was always going to be a thin draft for us from the get go.

That may be the case.. and honestly it might not even really be a concern.. because if he's a junior and goes back to UF, his money would potentially drop pretty significantly, especially if something freak happens like an unexpected injury. So there's a fine line if he's a junior. However, if he's a RS Soph, then he's got about all of the leverage in the world because he'd be draft eligible again next year.

I'm guessing he could likely get another year.

He has been at Fl for 3 years, played minimally his 1st year and using that as leverage.

I get what you're saying a little, but your bonus pool money and picks are linked. So when you lose your 2nd and 3rd, you lose whatever slot value was attached to those picks picks, which was #4 overall in each round. Essentially it doesn't really matter that we don't have to worry about picking guys in the 2nd or 3rd, we lose that money regardless, but are in a very awkward spot because we have such a high pick with such a high single slot value with minimal cash to go around. There's a good chance that Langford has and will take up close to 80-85% of our cap, leaving us only maybe 1.5 million for the entire rest of the draft.

I think I'm done, here.

It really comes to Slot. If you pay one player more than slot, that money has to come from other players.

I get it... having a 2nd and 3rd pick gives us more player to rip off and pay less than slot. You get a 10th Rd 5th Yr Sr to to sign for $200K and spent the rest of the $1.8M slot difference elsewhere.

10th Rd player gets double what he thought he'd get, gets to brag he was a 2nd Rder and buys a Ferrari that he wraps around a pole on his way to one of the Big5 where he'll make $100K as a consultant.

Drafted the ULaLa catcher. You know he can handle the bat being on that team. Guys on the TV said they though the could have gone in the 3rd or 4th round.
