I like the pick a lot but he will be 22 before next season, so he needs to start putting it together rather quickly.
I think his insane production the past 2 years in high level college baseball shows he has it together. I bet we see him by the end of 2025.

So will almost every college player taken in this draft? You have to either be 21 by the draft or be in school three years. The kid is built like a linebacker and either the best or second best hitter in this draft, and one of the best we've seen.

Langford is clutch too, don't ignore that. Went off in the CWS

The worst pitcher in the league the last 2 or 3 years pitches 7 strong against an all star lineup.

A guy who had hit 2 HRs all year hits 4 in one series.

I mean, this **** is just ****in' ridiculous right now.

Is this real life?
It's baseball.

Agree. Proven and will be here quickly. Smart pick

Does anyone else feel like Dollander will follow down the same path and end up like Leiter? I just get the sense that he's got similar stuff, but also a similar problem in locating his fastball. His windup seems like it needs real work as well.

Langford was always the no-brainer for me if they had their pick of the 3 OF's slotted behind Crews and Skenes. But I thought he'd go by 3, so really happy with how this worked out

As far as Dollander goes, i'm not that impressed either. Took a big step backward this season. I don't think he has quite the control issue that Leiter had/has, but he got touched up a fair amount this year. Not efficient, didn't really pitch deep into games.

Langford :

Top 25 overall MLB. Both Keith Law and Kiley McDaniel had Max Clark slotting in at 29 overall, and they both had Langford clearly ahead of Clark.

Actually…..

Langford is the #9 prospect in all of baseball, according to Kiley McDaniel. Just looked it up.

For comparison, Crews slots in at #10 and Skenes is at #13

Vandy coach quotes that he's the closest thing to Mike Trout… I'm good with that.

Just a few observations from last night:
  • I am beyond happy that Wyatt Langford fell to the Rangers. I think he was the one player out of the top three that reasonably could have fallen to us, that checked all of our boxes. He's a ++ hitter with serious juice; an underrated athlete that can go up and get it better than people think; and someone who won't need a ton of time in the minor leagues because he's that advanced physically and at the plate. I would be shocked if he didn't begin next year at Frisco and was with Round Rock threatening a call up by the end of the 2024 season.
  • One reason the Rangers need to either go big in the trade market or really start to call-up/hit on some minor leaguers is because this is the second draft in a row that they haven't had a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Now, in baseball it's not the end of the world, especially when you do well in the international market (HELLO SEBASTIAN WALCOTT), but we can't keep doing it. We cannot keep spending astronomical money in free agency, not only because our cap hit is already high, but because we can't keep punting on 2nd and 3rd round picks when we now won't be drafting in the top 5 anymore.
  • It was slightly depressing when they threw up the previously drafted players for the Rangers. We just have not hit at a high enough rate over the past 10 years on first round picks, and pitchers in particular (Colin Wiles, Alex Gonzalez, Luis Ortiz, Dillon Tate, Cole Ragans, Cole Winn, and Jack Leiter). None of them above helped or I believe will help the Rangers in a significant way.

Overall though I am very happy with what we got in Wyatt Langford and the direction of the franchise. We are going to be just fine in the position player category for the foreseeable future.

Sebastian Wolcott may be as untouchable as any player in the Rangers system. He could be a generational player.

I'm not saying he's going to turn out like them, but he's absolutely cut from the same physical specimen cloth as Elly De La Cruz, ONeill Cruz, Ronald Acuña etc. I hope he's on the Evan Carter untouchable list as well, because he's got a real chance.

For those of us that want to look him up... you've gotta spell his name correctly.

Good catch re: the spelling of his last name, my bad.

FWIW, Scott Lucas I find to be generally one of the most pessimistic, negative voices on Ranger's prospects - he seems overly committed to, as our former AD said, managing expectations. He was ho-hum on Jung, ho-hum on Tavares, etc.

Well, he is effusive in his praise for Walcott. Dominating at the levels he's been thus far exposed to, and unlike a lot of foreign players, doesn't have the language barriers to deal with (from the Bahamas where they speak English). 17 yr old SS who is currently 6'4" and around 200 with room to grow, but apparently athletic enough to stay in the middle. He could be an Alex Rodriguez-type SS.

He's got an above-ground pool -- he's completely committed to managing expectations.

a somewhat conservative evaluation of Walcott:

Quote:

The Bahamas is an emerging source of baseball talent and some evaluators believe Walcott could become the best player ever from the islands. The Rangers signed him in January for $3.2 million, the sixth-highest bonus in the 2023 international class. It's easy to dream on him because of his athletic, projectable 6-foot-4 frame and bevy of tools.
With his bat speed, future strength and the leverage in his right-handed swing, Walcott could grow into plus-plus raw power and deliver 30 or more homers per season. He already can produce 110 mph exit velocities at age 16. While he'll need to develop some polish at the plate, he has good hand-eye coordination and a relatively mature approach.
Walcott has plus straight-line speed but projects as more of an average-to-solid runner once he fills out. Though he may slow down and is taller than a typical shortstop, he has good infield actions and well-above-average arm strength. He may be able to stick at short, and if he can't, he could be a plus defender at third base or right field.
This season he has split between the Dominican Summer League and Rookie ball. He's hitting .297 with 5 2B, 3 3B, 5 HR and 6 SB. 12 walks to 21 Ks in just under 100 ABs. And just 17 yrs old.

You were the one who put my onto the DiamondPod and the guys on the show. You are spot on with Lucas's view of Ranger's prospects, and although I do think he can be too close to the situation at times, his view is an accurate one to view our prospects through generally. All of the guys on the show are really great mouthpieces for relaying how our prospects are doing, their future outlook, etc. They are all junkies for minor league baseball, and quite literally watch it and go to games everyday. They are one of the reasons that I am completely out on Jack Leiter now, and agree that we need to cut bait and get whatever value we can in return as soon as possible.

Managing prospects is something the Rangers have never seemed to do well. They've had glimpses, like when Harrison, Holland, and CJ Wilson were all up about the same time. Pudge, Juan-Do, Sierra, et al, had a nice run.

But, we've never put both SP and Hitting together. It is something that teams like Tampa does that makes them sustain success.

We're in a good place where I hope we figure it out.

How guys like Duran, Otto, and Bradford are handled will help determine where we are.

Cole starting pitcher for AL in ASG. Would've loved to see Nathan get the nod as he is deserving, but also want him to only throw like 10 pitches lol - if a relief role somehow does that, so be it.

Well, good thing for Cole is he doesn't have to face the Rangers line up. They hit him pretty well last time.

Wondering if this was just taking a flyer, opening up Pool money for a later draft if available, or the Rangers see something others don't.

Had nice success in the Cape Cod League where he threw (checks notes) a big 10 innings.

Seriously, wtf on this dude. Walks people like crazy. Gets hit. Yikes. Are we sure this is the right Alejandro Rosario?

He was a starter for the Canes. Maybe we see the stuff as bullpen stuff and he can figure it out there.
