IMO no other explanation for some of the short leashes the starters have had.
Gray was at 89 pitches through 6IP/3ER, and had just finished an inning of ground out, strike out, strike out. He absolutely could have gone out for another inning but we rolled with Perez and Leclerc (and it worked out).
Heaney was at 81 pitches through 5.1IP/0ER, and had started inning with infield single, strikeout, single. He absolutely could have gone out for another inning (or two) but we leaned on 4 different guys to finish the game.
Dunning was at 74 pitches through 4IP/3ER. Certainly a candidate for an early hook if you have a decent bullpen. Finished the game strikeout, groundout, single (caught stealing). Previous inning he went strikeout, lineout (to pitcher), walk, strikeout... So really just one bad inning (the 2nd). But we went the bullpen route and leaned on 4 different guys (and 2 of them blew it).
Now in all of those scenarios whether the SP went another inning probably didn't impact our bullpen guys blowing the game, but it just doesn't make sense to me to have a quick hook on your starters when your bullpen has proven wholly unreliable.
Someone help me make sense of this. Anyone.

I don't get it at all. The only thing I can think of is he's just trying to make sure guys stay as fresh as possible and not fall off or get injured like Eovaldi. We rode him into an injury, so maybe he's trying to avoid that. I don't get it though.

But Bochy has consistently pulled starters pitching decently or well an inning or two early to lean on a bullpen that has shown it is wholly unreliable.

And with a 5 game lead or so, eh ok... I can see trying to get the bullpen work and feeling confident.
But we're losing these games, and losing the division race... so if doing this has us sitting at home in October with a rested rotation and confident bullpen... who the **** cares?
I know you aren't disagreeing, just frustrating. Scherzer was DEALING. And we lean on Brock Burke. This was the likely outcome, not some freak occurence.
Why in the f did we lift scherzer at only 85 pitches?

I wonder if Bochy has orders from the front office and analytics, because it's absolutely a concerted effort to pull guys before they should right now.
I'm calling yet another loss here in the 7th. This team just doesn't have "it", maybe next year.
