Injuring himself crashing into the centerfield wall...he certainly has that aspect of Springer's game down pat.

Machado is opting out of his 10/300 deal after 5 years (after 2023). He turned down an additional 5 years at 105 M tacked on to the end of his deal. That would be 10/210 for ages 31-40. Bregman will be a FA when he's 31 as well.

WAR/OPS+ Since 2016, 2019, 2022
Bregman: 30.5/137; 16.6/138; 4.5/133
Machado: 34.9/132; 17.6/136; 6.8/159

Similar, but Machado has an edge. Machado is seeking 10/400 M. (lol)

Different position and 1 year younger at FA, but Xander is a decent comp too.

WAR/OPS+ Since 2016, 2019, 2022
Bregman: 30.5/137; 16.6/138; 4.5/133
Bogaerts: 29.5/123; 18.5/133; 5.8/131

Of course, Xander got 11/280 M.

Assume Bregman continues similarly to 2022 and his market value is 10/250 M. What does Crane/Brown have to offer him now in order to keep him? Put on your GM cap, what would feel good offering him?

I love Dana Brown so far. Obviously, it's easy to talk the talk... but so far, I love it.

I am thinking 8 years for 275 and he'd sign now

I never saw a home team discount happening for any of the talent that has left but Bregman is one that I could see taking a team friendly deal.

He seems to really have some roots here in Houston and seems to understand the importance of being able to surround himself with quality players. I feel like if it came to it Bregman would play for free.

I should say I don't expect it but with Bregs I think it's a possibility.

I have been saying this for a while. Team friendly does not mean he will be poor while playing it just means he takes 5-6 million less a year. He will still be a gazillionaire before he is done. Plus he will make up the money through HEB commercials and sales.

I think the opposite. Bregman is going to take the most wherever he can get it.

the problem the Astros have...is that Bregman is already at $30 MM per year in salary.

he's not going to take a pay cut for his age 31 thru 35 seasons

Then don't offer him one. Offer up to year 39 or 40, with decreasing amounts in the 2nd half of the deal. Obviously, I don't know how it impacts the overall payroll, but front load it for him.

how much should Bregman be paid at ages 36, 37, 38, 39, etc..,?

and why do folks think he will defeat father time?

34/year through age 37…..that's not Astros baseball.

Maybe like 8/225 that's still more per year than Xander

the Astros need to wait another year on Bregman and see if he can approach his 2018 & 2019 numbers.

he was a $35 MM player in those seasons

Its more about defeating the luxury tax.

You want Bregman from age 31-35 for 35 M a year. Do you offer him 5/175 or 8/190? One has an AAV of 35 m while the other has 23.75.
Lonestar_Ag09

Bregman is never taking that low.

He's better than Xander and he'd be getting less money for less years.

Tax cap takes average per year not individual seasons
Farmer1906

That wasn't the point. It's just to show AAV differences.

I guess I don't see the point then I guess. Sure I'd rather more years and less money…but what's the point discussing totals that are never in the cards

He is about to be 29. In '23 he will make 28.5
In '24 he will be turning 30 making the same.

If we offered 8/228 it would be the same rate taking him to 38 and I believe he takes it
Farmer1906

The point is 23 is less than 35. Pay him past what you're willing to normally in order to lower the AAV. It's what several teams did last offseason.

It's a fun discussion but based on history the Astros aren't going to do long term deals that end anywhere close to age 40 and we don't want to be above the cap for more than one year. So unless we can do extensions that buy out early free agent years we aren't re-signing Bregman, Tucker or Valdez. Enjoy them while they are here.

In hindsight, I wish Lunhow would have given Bregman a longer extension.

Would you like to make a bet on that?

I'd be willing to bet we resign at least 1 of those plus Altuve.

I agree with you. Plus if we signed Framber and/or Ted buying out arbitration is exactly what we would be doing….

Does this mean switch hitters have to change jersey depending upon who is on the mound?

Seriously, that does make sense.

Yep. And they are really screwing up the Reds mascot patch:

Don't you know? Everyone works where their wife is from. Especially in sports.
