All this talk of combined no-hitters I decided to look up how many have been thrown and we lead the pack with 3 of them followed by the Angels and Orioles with 2 a piece (Baltimore does get dinged because they lost one of the no-hitters lol).

The first combined no-hitter, what a classic with the Babe included but never retiring a batter:
It's probably the most famous opening to any no-hitter. Ruth, in his fourth season as an ace pitcher for Boston, got himself ejected for arguing balls and strikes after walking leadoff man Ray Morgan. Morgan was caught stealing after Shore's very first pitch, and the righty retired the next 26 batters he faced for a most improbable no-hitter.

It really is a shame that Shore isn't credited for a perfect game, but what can you do?

The Babe in involved in so many great baseball stories that they seem endless. How many people know he made the final out of a World Series by being caught stealing?

We actually have 4

2022 WS vs PHI (Javier, Abreu, Montero, Pressly)
2022 vs NYY (Javier, Neris, Pressly)
2019 vs SEA (Sanchez, Harris Biagini, Devo)
2003 vs NYY ( Oswalt, Munro, Saarloos, Lidge, Dotel, Wagner)

If Wiki is correct, there have only been 18 combined no-hitters. Technically, it is rarer than a single pitcher no-no.

Edit: I think we're tied with the Cubs for No hitter differential at 10. We've thrown 15 and only been no hit 5x. Cubs are 17-7.

We were at the 2003 no-no. What an awesome night. That was the only game they won on the Astros first road swing through New York and Boston… we went two of the three games in each city.

Here is a fun stat for those who don't think too highly of CC.

Keep in mind WAR is a counting stat so CC is hurt when he's hurt.

Would one of your Springer's be orange and a size medium, and would you be willing to sell it?

You bet!

If you have one you're serious about selling I am definitely interested. I've been looking for a size medium orange Springer jersey for a while. Year/patches?

I'll chime in.

A no-hitter is a no-hitter whether it's 1 pitcher or 9 pitchers. However, a single pitcher throwing a no-hitter is a fantastic individual accomplishment. I am not poopooing a team when it's combined, but I am also not elevating Javier like I would Verlander when it's 6 vs 9.

As for the Gibson '68 season, if you teleport him in 2023 and he throws as he did in '68 now, he probably wouldn't have a single CG because he'd get hit. With the changes to scouting, video, data, training, blah blah blah it's not the same game. I don't think it's fair to compare across eras.

I actually think a combined no hitter may be harder to pull off. You need everyone to have their best stuff.

We're developing a nice stockpile of teenage talent. German Ramirez (16, SS, Dominican) looks nice, but the headliner of our 2023 international crop appears to be Camilo Diaz (17, SS, Dominican).

Astros are also expected to sign Esmil Valencia (17, OF, Domincan) and Ruben Menes (20, P, Cuba). The four prospects listed thus far are expected to eat most of our ~$5mm pool.

A couple of our 2022 international youngsters are off to good starts in their pro careers as well. Luis Baez (19, OF) and Kenni Gomez (17, OF). A few of the young Dominican pitchers I posted about yesterday are super talented (Santa, Tamarez and Ullola). Throw in Ryan Clifford as well, a 2022 draftee who's only 19.

This is a big year coming up for our farm system. The top of our prospect list is looking a little bare outside of Brown and Gilbert. That's understandable given we didn't have our first or second rounders in 2020 or 2021. But there's some guys at the lower levels who could make some nice moves this year. By the end of 2024, I think we'll be back in the top half of MLB prospect rankings. Just in time to start replacing some FA departees.

Can't believe I missed the 2019 one...I guess it just doesn't leap out to me although I remember it vividly.

I also think it was the only good inning Biagini pitched for us his entire short stint with the club. He was really funny until he started getting shelled on the regular...it's only colorful if you're winning.

No-hitters are cool, but all you really need to know is that Mike Fiers & Homer Bailey are tied for 7th all time with 2 each and Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens had none.

It might not be fair but at least with baseball you can do it. Imagine trying to compare stats of a current NFL player to one in the 60s. To me the worst thing about the steroid era is how badly it distorted statistics for one small time period.

My favorite piece of useless but mind blowing baseball trivia...

Nolan had 7 no nos and 0 Cy Youngs
Roger had 0 no nos and 7 Cy Youngs

Pretty much. Maybe that's why we meet in the WS so often. Iron sharpens iron.

33% of the Grapefruit League is NL East, 33% AL East, and the last 33% is us, Tigers, Twins, Cards, & Pirates.

Kind of funny we hardly see any AL East (minus BOS) or Pirates, Tigers, & Twins.

A combined no-hitter is rarer than a single pitcher no-hitter, because you used to leave the pitcher in until they gave up a hit or completed the no-hitter. Now with pitch counts, they're pulling pitchers in the middle of no-hitters. That used to be almost unheard of. Going forward there will likely be more combined no-hitters than single pitcher no hitters.
