Did Ford and Sparky each get a ring in 2017? I seem to remember TK and Blummer getting one. I think they all deserve a second!

They got them for everyone, I would bet they are not as fancy as the players rings, but they are probably still pretty nice. These guys travel and are on the road and just as much apart of the team as everyone else. They will get something.

Even if you hadn't, they're great. Not a huge fan of the inngings Sparky does play by play as he's much better at providing color.

Depends on who you ask. If you ask CC, he is back in Minnesota it gets pretty freezing cold there.

ON a serious note, the one thing that is not being said and I doubt we will never know is that the Astros front office could have had the same issues just not been open about them. Once a team is interested in a a free agent they can request the medicals from a prior team. What's to say that is wasn't those records that did not start this?

Carlos is a great player and it sucks, but I don't feel sorry for him. He will see more money in a 1/3 of a season that most of will see in our lifetime. Just as players can be ruthless when it comes to pay, he learned that owners can be the same way.

Agree. I know Carlos has some loyal fans here but I suspect that loyalty goes one way.

Curious if Carlos would've decided to do the Bauer route and taking short term deals with opt-outs what is overall career earning would've been instead of signing this deal with the Twins.

He/Boras should've realized after the Giants balked with his physical no other team was going to give him a massive 10+ year deal. They should've swallowed their pride and went super short term, high yearly salary IMO. But then again he now has guaranteed money he wouldn't have had by doing the short term deal. It at least would have gotten him out of freaking Minnesota purgatory. He will now rot away and will essentially be forgotten.

Jesus.... sorry I'm not the biggest fan of Robert Ford. Didn't expect to get attacked like that.

Again, I don't dislike him. I just don't love his play-by-play. That's all. I've been a huge Houston fan my entire life and I am not an Arlington troll.

To be fair, I was also in radio/broadcasting for nearly a decade so maybe my ears are trained to listen differently than others do.

By doing that he may get 35-40 M for 2023. Maybe 2024 too. But what happens if he has a down year? What happens when you has a major drop in sprint speed and all the GMs thinks he's about to decline? I think the risk would be incredible high for Correa to attempt that and why it was never an option.

That's the thing I don't understand in all this...Carlos DEFINITELY loves the spotlight. You ain't gettin' that in Minnesota.

Yes, back when they had Kirby, Knoblauch and Morris they were must see TV but that was a long time ago. In this day and age unless you have an unlimited budget or a fantastic farm system/pipeline of Latin American players (like we do) you're just not going to compete year in and year out.

I guess he can start planning some nice trips with Daniella in October. He'll need to cheer her up after spending more time in that hellhole city.

You brought it up and others agreed with your synopsis that it was a bad opinion. You can't hate on people for that.

A short term deal with opt outs is exactly what he had in MIN before he opted out.

I know this entire situation was pretty unforeseen but I think a lot of blame has to fall at the feet of Boras and his camp for not fully understanding the medicals.

I don't know for sure but I can imagine that prior to advising a client to opt out and become a FA (especially one seeking a $300+ 10 year deal) he has his own docs do a physical and comb through it all to find any possible complication. I don't know maybe not. If not then he should.

IMO Boras may not have been able to see this coming but I think it's reasonable to say he should've have had an idea that it's a possibility.

Twins coming out like bandits on this one!

Had him from year to year for $35mm but now have him locked in for 6 years at $33mm.

They played this one pretty well.

I'd like to think that as he watched SF/NY drama unfold over the course of 2 weeks that when the GM of the Twins was told by his secretary "Scott Boras is on line 1 for you" that he let him sit on hold for like 20 minutes.

How old will he be in 6 years? I think the deal includes some options with Minnesota after 6, but assuming he's healthy I bet he can get another 75-100mil deal and will make about the same by the end of his career.

If the giants and Mets are right and his leg falls off then he gets a lot less, but he's a pro athlete with the worlds best medical care so I kind of doubt that.

Billy gets screwed on the HOF vote the way a lot of really good players do because he doesn't check a lot of boxes that a lot of voters demand.

1) Never led the league in saves
2) Never got close to a Cy Young
3) His teams always failed in the playoffs; he played in 8 playoff series and his team only advanced once (06 Mets)
4) Didn't play in a media center or have a vicious personality.

Meanwhile, as those numbers show, he totally deserves to be in. He had one year his entire career with an ERA above 2.85, and that was the bizarre 2000 season when the team moved to Enron Field and our pitching was god awful. He also got hurt that year. He could have pitched 5 more years. his last year in the Majors at age 38 with the Braves in 2010 he was 7-2 with a 1.43 ERA and 37 saves. That might have been the best year of his career! At age 38!

Outside of the above, his biggest problem is he played at the same time as Mariano Rivera, who has 652 saves and is already in the HOF, Trevor Hoffman, who has 601 saves and is already in the HOF, and Francisco Rodriquez, who has 437 saves and is eligible for the first time this year. Wagner has 422 saves which is sixth all-time, but he's way behind the first two guys for total saves and I feel that F-Rod on the ballot this year with comparable numbers to Wagner, but a flashier career that included a World Series title when he was only 20 is going to water down Wagner's votes.

I'm not sure how much I agree on the medicals part. We have know idea what the medicals actually show, and we're just taking two clubs' word for it.

These clubs are signing guys to play until 40ish for big money. How many of them are really going to stay healthy through the end?

The difference with Carlos is they have some history with his ankle and they wanted to use it to pay him less.

San Fran's front office is former Astros management and knew about that injury. I think owner got cold feet over the cost.

I think Cohen completely tried to take advantage of the situation. He knew once the Giants claimed medicals as their reason for hesitancy, he could claim the same and take away Carlos' leverage because no club after that would offer him the long term big money deal. Cohen thought he had the advantage so much that he ended up lowballing Carlos by $46M when compared to the Twins.

The Twins were pretty ok with his medicals.

The Twins were ok with his medicals for the time frame of the shorter contract.

And maybe Boras should've waited a bit before jumping into bed with Cohen and the Mets knowing this medical issue was now out there in the open.

With a lot of things I think the truth is probably somewhere there in the middle. I would bet that there is something in the medicals but probably not as serious as the Mets and Giants are making it out to be. The Twins see it but they're comfortable with the shorter deal with vesting options kicking in late.

And yeah the Twins had this fall into their lap but at the end of the day they got the guy for cheaper and longer than they had him before so they did something right.

Not in the traditional sense, but being gracious and not burning bridges even when things look like they didn't work out is not how every organization handles things. Good for them for taking the high road and parting in a way that made Carlos feel welcome coming back.

you could also flip the coin and say what if he has an incredible year and puts up great #'s? He could then cash in for a huge shorter deal for another team and GTFO of Minnesota. No doubt it would've been a risk, but then again if he thinks his ankle is healthy it could've been one worth taking? Maybe since he already had the shorter deal with the opt-outs he felt like he owed it to Minnesota to not pull the same crap and try to stiff them again by leaving town if it presented itself?

Either way he will now rot away there and be forgotten for the next 6 years.

I also agree with what 07 said. Surely Boras and Correa had a hint that teams could become skeptical about the ankle injury? If not, and I was Correa I'd fire Boras. He screwed Carlos on this one. Crappy market, crappy team, and not the big contract he had hoped for.
W

time will tell how the Twins will fare with Correa's contract...

but it has to be scary to see how many free agent contracts from just a year ago already look like big mistakes.

Story, Bryant, Baez, and possibly Semien.

someone in the national media should write a column about that
