I wanted Carlos to stay, and I feel bad that he's getting screwed over now, but good lord this couldn't have worked out any better for the Astros.

This date in Astro history was one of the last steps in the total demolition of the '86 Astros. The team tried to keep the band together for a few years after the near miss in 86, but fell to 75-87 in 1987, rebounded to 82-80 in 1988 and 86-76 i 1989, but the wheels fell off the wagon for good in 1990 (another 75-87) and it was obvious it was time to close up shop.
They traded their only established offensive commodity in Glenn Davis to the Orioles for Pete Harnisch, Curt Schilling, and Steve Finley on January 10, 1991. Harnsich was a great competitor and our best starter for a few years, the other two unfortunately had legendary careers that were not in Houston for the most part, although Finley did live on the same street as my grandmother for a few years.

The road to this spot included:

In 1987 they traded away Phil Garner and released Senor Smoke (RIP). At the end of 1987, they released Jose Cruz, to my never-ending rage.

In 1988, they traded away fan-favorite Denny Walling for Bob Forsch

At the end of 1988, they famously lost Nolan Ryan to the Rangers.

In May 1989, they released Alan Ashby right before he got on the bus after a game. Total dick move.
Did the same thing to Bob Knepper in late July of 1989. Total dick move.

In August of that year they traded Billy Hatcher for Glenn Wilson, the man with the golden gun.

At the end of the '89 season, they opted not to resign Kevin Bass.

In April 1990, they traded Charlie Kerfeld to the Braves.
In August 1990 on the same day, they traded Larry Andersen to the Rex Sox for some scrawny third baseman, which made no sense because we already had a third baseman. On the same day, Bill Doran was traded to the Reds.

After the season, Juan Agosto, Terry Puhl, and Danny Darwin were all granted free agency.

The only player from the 1986 team that was on the opening-day roster in 1991 was MIke Scott, who started opening day and gave up 5 runs in 4 innings, then was the losing pitcher in a 16-2 loss to the Giants 5 days later. He decided to hang it up after that, the last mand standing from the '86 team.

I was a fan until BOB made the worst trade in the history of the NFL. After that, it was extremely difficult to follow, especially with all of the virtue signaling in the NFL. Haven't really looked back and makes my weekends that much more enjoyable.

I tried to be a fan but it never really happened. I love football and until all the dumbass virtue signaling I always watched simply because I loved watching football played at the highest level. Growing up in BCS in the 80's I could cheer for the Cowboys and the Oilers and pray for an all-Texas Super Bowl that never came.

Then the Oilers left and that went to hell. I enjoyed watching the Texans when they played well but there's never been any emotional attachment. And the Texans have done zero in the last 20 years to generate anything like that. They've been the most bland, milquetoast organization possible. They've managed to hit pretty well on 1st round picks but they've just been a terribly run organization for their entire existence. They're pretty much impossible to really care about.

Not only do we not win one but we don't even make another one.

The reasoning for the Dodgers to win in 2023 is great.

They fell short with titanic teams, but now they've undergone a lot of changes this offseason and yeah you gotta think they win another eventually.

They could very well win it but the reasoning is comical.

I'm shocked an Orioles fan clinging to his east coast bias has the Braves making one World Series in the next decade and the Astros none despite ruling the AL with an iron fist for years now. Just ignore that they're arguably the top two franchises in MLB.

It's going to be fun to win a hundo and cruise through the AL playoffs again next year

It is worth noting that I did this exercise two years ago and absolutely did not get either of the last two years right.

I am so sick and tired of east coast media bias and arrogance. ( not just in sports, btw)

I loved Kevin Bass. He was Derek Bell without the attitude!

If you could choose what will happen to Correa, what would your ideal ending to this fiasco be...and then what do you think will actually?

I'd like him to go back to the Twins, stay healthy, have a great year and then stick with them out of loyalty and newfound humility.

I think he will probably end up with the Mets on a lesser deal, the team will eventually implode and he will either eventually get traded or demand a trade.

I don't think he's going to be injured any more than the usual.

Alas, Bagwell's "titgrab" at home plate has been outdone.

Wow

Seems like a great deal for MIN. Actually worked out pretty nice for them.

Now I can't wait for that awkward press conference.

What a saga. His wife wanted them big city lights of NYC so badly and now they're stuck in MN for 7 years. What a weird, strange saga. Have to wonder if they don't have major #ragrets

So he's going to MIN for $1.33M more AAV than we offered.

So at the end of the day how much did this fiasco cost him?

What was the Giants initial offer?

Wasn't the Astros offer 5/$160?

And this is 6/200 plus vesting?

And that vesting option is if something that has not happened more often that it has in his physical prime somehow magically happens six years from now when he's hitting his mid 30s?

So lets just call it 6/200.

Yes, but he played for 35 M last year. The reports was 4 vesting years. Now it's 2. Guess we'll have to wait.
Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah I guess it is fair to consider what he made last year if we are comparing what he would have had here.

But it seems like what he's ending up getting isn't so far away that he couldn't have negotiated it here. instead of a sad cold place where postseason dreams go to die.

Wow! The Correa contract makes me happy and sad. Happy for CC. Sad because at the point the Astros were looking to resign him, there was a report he was offered 6/210.

I'm happy with Pena, but damn -- I miss CC's arm at SS.
cc10106

Astros just keep looking smarter every day which is nothing new.

Good for CC. Atleast he gets to rake in the ****ty AL Central.
Farmer1906

I don't think that was a valid offer. Randy Mcllvoy reported it but I think he was just speculating because no one else picked it up.

I kinda wish CC would have signed with an NL East or NL West team for that deal just to be a thorn in the Giants and Mets side.
