Quote:

The Rangers, seeking a corner outfielder, are among the clubs interested in free agent Michael Conforto, who also is on the radar of the Mets, Astros and, according to the New York Post, the Marlins.
Conforto, who turns 30 on March 1, did not play at all last season because of a shoulder injury that required surgery. Boras, his agent, told reporters at Brandon Nimmo's news conference Thursday that the outfielder is seeking a deal that is, "short-term, probably a couple of years with an opt-out."
The Astros, as first reported by USA Today, explored a trade for Diamondbacks' Daulton Varsho, but believe the price is too high. The return of Michael Brantley remains possible.

1) 2B Altuve

3) LF Yordan

6) 3B Bregman
7) DH JD
8) CF Chas
9) C Maldonado
On what planet should Bregman bat 6th while Pena is 2nd?

I literally googled "Astros 2023 projected lineup", copied and pasted and changed the DH (I believe Hensley for JD). The post was about what an exciting lineup it would be with one more nice pickup, and that's all.

Bregman is my guy. I have been sticking up for him for years as clowns around here called him mediocre, and you know that.

You've clearly turned your back on Breggy.

I think we're going to have a bunch of very disappointed posters when Pena is more like 2022 Regular Season and not like the 2x postseason MVP.

What's wrong with that?

22 regular season Pena was just fine and I expect an uptick after getting his rookie season under his belt.

He was very average. That's fine for a rookie. I think he'll take a step forward. Improve his OBP and AVG slightly.

But when you have a stacked lineup he should be ahead of Bregman, Alvarez, Tucker, Brantley, & Abreu.

No way. Careless mistake and that's all!

I do think Dusty will keep Peña 2nd. I agree with whoever said Breggy needs to hit 3rd or 4th.

He "should" get more favorable calls from umps although that's not a given with the inherent bias against the Astros but he got hosed quite a bit last year.

I'm also curious to see how his batting improves because he eliminated the high leg kick in September and his numbers really took off after that one small change. Who knows, but it's definitely something to watch.

There's also the year 1 to year 2 jump that many guys take. I'm not expecting postseason MVP numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if they took a nice uptick from his rookie regular season.

With a few weeks left in the regular season, someone on here posted the Astros record when Pena hit second.
It was insane, something like 50-16, or thereabouts. I think Abreau hits 6th, between Tucker and Brantley. Bregman is a really solid pick me up 4 hole hitter when he's going to right center and a really good rally starter if Yordan clears things up before he hits.

What if I told you Peña's production in the early part of the lineup was very similar to his production in the latter part of the lineup. The improvement in pitches he saw was technically better, but only by the tiniest amounts.

Did we win more because of him or is it just random correlation?

Why does everyone want Abreu 6th? He's a 9 year vet who's batted in the 3/4 hole 99% of his career. He's achieved more offensively than Pena likely ever will. That's not a knock on Pena, Abreu has just been that kind of dude.

All this talk about a LH OF. What about Dominic Smith? He's not great defensively, but he can play left and 1B.

To quote that famous philosopher John Candy - ' hey, if something works for me, I stick with it.' I also like Bregman leading off the second 3 in the lineup. He takes walks and sets up Tucker and Abreau. I would like to see Pena greatly increase his walk percentage, however.

My daughter said the most beautiful thing in the world to me tonight when we were talking about taking a little get-away trip together later this year.

"Maybe we can go see the Astros play in another city."

For the right price would not mind JD Martinez.

I see the Mets are interested in him so probably gonna be too expensive

Yep, you would think at least one pitcher from the best pen in baseball last season would sneak on to the list somewhere. I guess they can argue that the Astros pen is made up with a bunch of very good with no weak links instead of a true standout.
yeah but that one guy had a trumpet player, so there's that

That list can't be taken seriously. Five outta the ten made the playoffs and only one on the list made the LCS. Gimme a break.

I'm not a big fan of Dominic Smith but that type of utility player may be the road we go down to fill the remaining 3-4 spots left on the opening day roster. I prefer paying a little more for a Profar type that could be a mostly everyday player for us. Combine that with a Hampson or Brian Anderson on the bench and our depth is looking pretty decent.

Of all the dumbassery we comment on during the off-season, this was your tipping point?

I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Asking a question about how a few are posting doesn't really seem like a "tipping point" to me.

On another note, my youngest asks for the Astros 101 book every time we put him down. Take that little blue truck!

Heyman's consistently wrong and a mouthpiece for Boras . Pretty sure he tweeted that the Mets were in on Correa about an hour before he signed with the Giants. I think everyone knows about Brantley, but I doubt we'll get Confroto, and I don't know why we would go after Profar.

After posting tweets about Arson Judge and Coke Hamels, maybe he meant to tweet he's listening to some old Michael Bolton, Toni Braxton, and Jackson 5 albums while studying astrology.

Is it just me, or does that seem short / low for him? $25.3M AAV, 7 years. Seems like the Braves could have done that, right?

The braves did some financially smart moves locking in the young guys long term, but it's super risky to do that with so many early in their careers. It will be interesting to see how it pans out.
