Players DGAF about taxes

This isn't breaking news. It's been this way forever.

The whole tax debate is a myth created by fans to justify why their team is the better option and convince themselves that the player will be worse off after he signs elsewhere.

Carlos having breakfast at Tiny's #5 just now. I guess when you sign a deal like his you don't care that they don't have prices on their menus!

For those keeping track - same place last year that Hinch tried to convince him to be a Tiger.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

Tax guy here...states are different but typically, if you are a resident of a state, that home state taxes ALL your income subject to credits for whatever other state income taxes you pay. So, for example if California's rate is 10% and you pay 6% to Arizona for games played in Phoenix, California will want the other 4%. Or playing in Texas and paying nothing, California will want all 10%.

I don't know for sure how California does it, but that is the way a lot of states do. And I guess they could try to get around that by claiming non-residency status (i.e. claim residency in a no state income tax state and only pay each state for the games played there).

We are just in such a weird phase of contracts. It's like teams are just doing whatever they can to sign guys for the next 2-3, and ignoring the 7-8 years after that of remaining financial shackles.
Or they're trying to keep AAVs down so they can stay under the tax.

Option A - 5/200 M
The player takes up 15-17% of the "cap space" during those 5 years.

Option B - 10/275 M
The player takes up 8-12% of the "cap space" during those 10 years.

Plus most of the GMs in place now won't be at the end of these deals. And if they are, then they likely won a title.

half will be in SF, and another good chunk in LA and SD. That's a lot of Cali tax.

I understand that, but if you base just the amount of time and the cost of living in SF compared to Houston, especially with CC and his wife's lifestyle, it will likely be pretty damn close.
um no. Rental house for 7/8 months and california taxes for 90ish games aint gunna matter when you're talking that much money.

You want to know why we haven't been more aggressive with these rumored trades for a few different outfielders?

Go back and watch the complete 2021 WS highlights. Yes McCullers wasn't there but, we are so gung ho on Framber and Javier as we should be but, Urquidy is the only one that pitched worth a damn that entire series.

Framber, Javier and Garcia got lit up pretty good so while I'll love our staff and where it's at right now, I love our staff even more without having to give up even Urquidy. Hell in the last 2 years each one of them has looked great at times and rocked a few times in big moments.

So, imho, until we know exactly what Hunter is going to look like halfway through the year, I'm not giving up Jose or Garcia when I believe Brantley will be fine. Dude works harder than anyone in the game to get his body right and back.
yes, but father time has never lost a battle. I think Brantley will play about 80ish games a season here on out. Astros need Benintendi.
I guess man. Sure have seen JV, Pujols, Miggy and quite a few others kick father times ass lately. This isn't the 80's anymore. Surgery, recovery and nutrition aren't what they used to be.

Sure take Benintendi, but at what costs? Does it dip into Framber, Valdez, tucker or Bregman money somehow. If so, hard pass right now. We're still back in the ALCS this year with our staff and no major injuries.

Miggy did what now? Since 2017 his WAR is -2.1 with his best year as 0.2. Pujols was just as bad until he (-1.8 between 17 & 21) then he "magically" got better for a stretch. 99.9% believe funny business was going on with pharmaceuticals and/or balls.

I think most would love Brantley back, but it's okay to identify that as a risk with his age and injury history. It's not wrong to want another option too.
Thank you Farmer. Came to post the same response.

In regards to your last statement you might wanna calm that thinking down. Baseball is a crazy game and we aren't guaranteed anything even without any injuries.
Not necessarily doing that. I'm simply looking at Crane's motive to build a 20 year competing dynasty without having to lose one of our core guys coming up in free agency. Baseball is a crazy game and we're playing the odds to spend wisely while staying competitive for a least another 4-5 years while giving your farm system a chance to rebuild.

Well it's a lot more if your wife leaves you and takes half because she doesn't want to live in Minnesota. Chump change compared to family court thievery and alimony/child support....I mean child extortion.

Bingo Farmer. Hence why we're in no rush to hire the wrong GM that wouldn't be here in 7 years to blame for ****ing this current ride up.

Wow, just looked up Nolan Ryan's career earnings…..$25.7M! That's about $70M today. And he averaged about 130 pitches a game.

These young players have it pretty good.
Yup, time moves on. Hell for decades baseball players had second jobs but things evolve.

Well, unless you're the handful of teacher's I know who try to educate some often time badass kids in Austin while the teacher lives in their car.

Everything else evolves and you'd take the money too if you could still play at that level.

That would be odd.
They have prices on their online menus, and nothing is over $20 for breakfast (and their most expensive steak for dinner is $52), so it's not like this is an expensive place.

He was the best AAA starter in baseball last year and then when he got his chance, he gave up 2 runs in 9 games between the regular season and post. Only 2 we're starts. His stuff is good enough. That will translate from the minors. There is plenty of reason to expect he can be way more than a #5.

I do agree it will come with ups and downs. That's just how baseball is regardless if you're a rookie.
I agree with you. I'm not comparing pitchers to everyday players but for the love of God, if Pena can do what he did last year I'm pretty damn sure is gonna do just fine, up's and down's included. Dusty knows this and that's why he fights so hard for Maldy. Maldy knows what the hell he's doing with his staff and it's a pretty invaluable quality to have right now with our staff.

It's a California team so he will have to claim residency in California for tax purposes if I understand it correctly (California law). And as mentioned previously, whatever tax is owed to the other states due to the "Jock Tax", California as a state will take the remainder. There is actually a tax law website that is up to date that factors this in for NHL teams.

At the end of the day, whether CC lives there or not, he will pay just over 52.44% in taxes.

That does not include the 5% Scott Boras Agency fee.

I'm assuming the Central only gets the their champ in. No WC team.

That means LAD, SF, SD, NYM, Philly and ATL are playing for 5 spots. Two champs and 3 WC spots.

Someone ain't making it. And that's a lot of $$ playing golf in Oct.

And if someone in the Central catches a flyer then 2 big boys are out. Look out.

SF is the odd man out right now. Their roster needs the most help.

ATL will probably win the East, Mets could challenge, obviously. I think the Phillies are still a step or two below over 162.

I could see LA or SD win the West.

I would put both East & West winners over the Central so the byes go to them. STL should be the favorites in the Central, but I could see MIL challenging.

I don't see much else in the NL to really mix things up. Cubs aren't there. DBacks are trending the right way, but still a ways away. Marlins only have pitching. Reds, Buck-Os, Nats, & Rockies are all trash.

I know that there are other pressing needs like LF, catcher, and a left handed bat, but it would have been nice to have a veteran like that on this staff. In this off-season, that contract is very reasonable.

I agree man. I coached for over 13 years and now I help for the most part D2 to Juco student athletes and families find the right college fit. Mainly basketball recruiting and have to go over transcripts all day long and get the info to the coaches with current openings that fit the athlete.

I don't take pictures of any athletes, just weird for me after the age of 11 since I played college bball just feels weird doing that to people. Different strokes I guess man.
