*LONG THREAD ALERT*
— Robert Ford (@raford3) December 10, 2022
So, 10 years ago today, I visited Houston for the first time; the Houston Astros flew me in for the day to interview for their radio play-by-play broadcaster position.
In early December, I got a phone call from Larry Stokes, then the VP of Astros HR. He told me they wanted to bring me in for an interview. Even after our conversation, I still didn’t quite believe this was really happening. Then, a Southwest Airlines ticket appeared in my inbox.

The night before my interview, I was calling Nebraska Omaha’s game at Iowa State. After the game, word broke that the Royals were trading for James Shields & Wade Davis from the Rays, which signaled the Royals were done rebuilding, & in win-now mode.

Woke up early the next morning, 12/10/2012, for my flight to Houston. I didn’t even tell my parents, & can count on one hand the number of people I told about my interview with the Astros. It was the first time I interviewed with an MLB team, & I didn’t want to get my hopes up.

I had no feel for how my interview with the Astros went, & I kept mostly to myself about it. On MLK Day 2013, I was home with my toddler daughter when George Postolos called. He told me 1) the Astros were still interested & 2) Jim Crane would be calling me shortly.
— Robert Ford (@raford3) December 10, 2022
That was Monday. By Friday, I hadn’t heard from the Astros. Meanwhile, I’d gotten a new boss in KC, & he was ready to book travel for me for Royals spring training. Somehow, I held him off. Meanwhile, I left a voicemail for Postolos asking for clarity, & explaining my situation.

A couple of weeks later, I signed a contract with the Astros. Shortly after that, I was headed to spring training. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Yordan Alvarez earned the 2nd most of the new CBA “Bonus Pool” in 2022.
— Michael Schwab (@michaelschwab13) December 10, 2022
According to @Feinsand, Alvarez received a bonus of $2,381,143 because of his finish in year-end award voting and a new “joint WAR” figure.
Including Yordan’s base salary, he made $3,145,743 in 2022.

Most will disagree, I think, but I really don't like that "See ya later" home run call. It seems forced.
I was a little lukewarm on it until the game against the Red Sox back in May when the 'Stros hit 5 homeruns in the top of the second against Eovaldi.Jet Black said:

Some of you are messed up. Ford and Sparky are great to listen to. Even more so in Game 6 of a WS during a Yordonger.
He did a radio segment back in the day, I want to say it was with Granato & Zierlein…he talked about how in the low minors he used to "date" a fat waitress at the Golden Corral so that he and his teammates could get free food. It was probably the hardest I have ever laughed listening to the radio.AgSportsFan89 said:Big Al 1992 said:

Cueto would be a decent signing, with JV leaving that's 28 starts you need to fill and I think the 6 man rotation was ultimately beneficial for starters and bullpen alike.

I think what makes Ford and Sparky and in the same sense Bummer and TK and Julia great is that Depp down they're fans.
