A lot of money tied up in players that can't beat the Astros. I'll allow it.

The Yankees better hope they kept a bug surplus of those special balls.

Does the contract come with Goldilocks baseballs?

Remember when we didn't want to give Verlander 40 million over one or two years. Now the Yankees will do it for the next nine years.

I bet the "accidental" Heyman tweets yesterday were orchestrated with his agent to scare Yankee management/fans and force concession.

Those will be some expensive playoff strikeouts...well, assuming they make the postseason.

LOL at the Yankees

You'd think the Stanton contract would've taught them a lesson

So based on Morosi's report from yesterday Judge ended up with identical offers from SFG and NYY for 360/9

Honestly surprised given that choice that he went with the Yanks, who's own fans booed him. He could have gone home and been a hero, they'd have built a team around him and he could have etched a legend. Instead he's going to get sent home by the Astros year after year and in 30 years will be a fun trivia question. Weird.

The amount of additional money judge made by betting on himself is about what the Blue Jays paid springer.

Surprised?

I'm surprised anyone really thought he was going to sign somewhere else.

Thinking about the Yankees and Verlander...they are really the only team he consistently pitched really well against in the post-season.

Too bad Justin won't get to face them except in the unlikely event of a Subway World Series.

Again, another competitor spending a fortune on a bat when the daddy Astros will choke them out when it counts with pitching

So between Judge, Cole and Stanton they have $110MM a year tied up. Roughly a third of the ML clubs wont spend that on their entire roster.

And all 3 were on the team that won exactly 0 games in the ALCS.

Also, adding Judge puts the Yankees just $7m away from hitting the third tier of the CBT. If they go over their tax hit will be $25m/year. Signing him means no Rodon, no Correa, probably no anybody else. And really they're not in a great position moving forward.

They'll get some wiggle room after this season when they likely decline the mutual option with Donaldson ($21m in 2023) but they're still quite tied up.

They're paying Cole $36m through 2028.

They've got Stanton on the books for $32m until 2026, after which he drops to $29m in '27 and $25m in '28 with a $25m club option in '29. It looks like he is only a $22m cap hit, though fwiw.

They've got Rizzo for $17m for at least the next two years.

They're paying LaMahieu $15m through 2026. Hicks (lol) $10m for the next three seasons. One or both of those guys they're going to have to move if they want some breathing room.

Could be basing it on field dimensions and juiced balls. He can get to 500 HRs going oppo in Yankee Stadium with the Goldilocks balls over the next 9 years. Harder to hit bombs in SF with a real ball.

Or maybe Manfred said he would release the real Yankee letter if Judge left his team?

Think Ken Rosenthal/the writers at The Athletic will write up an article about how this is also a horrible contract and ask WTF are the Yankees thinking? Or, is that just for non-Yankee teams?

I mean why would Judge not re-sign? MLB covers for their cheating. Manfraud feeds Judge juiced balls. The media runs interference for anything negative.

You disagree? They let JV walk with no fight and have done nothing this off season to show they want to get better.

Nice attempt at trolling.
I will admit it was pretty weak, but it is the off season. Glad I could net you 25 stars though

Why would $25 mil in tax cost even slow down the Yankees? That's nothing for them.

Yankee fans were already booing Judge this season. It's going to be glorious watching Judge get booed every game on the back half of his contract.

It's not 25 M. It's 20% on overages the first time, 30% for the second, and 50% for the third. It resets if you go under. Then if you exceed by 20, 40, or 60 M then there surcharges tacked on 12%, 42.5% to 45%, & 60%.

Right now NYY is at 227 M which is 6 M under. They'll likely go over without a trade unless they stand pat, but it'll be 20% of a few million bucks. Then in 2024 they cut Donaldson, Sevy, Bader, IKF, Wandy, & Montas. That'll free up 53 M so they'll be back to go back under and reset.

Unpopular take - I think NY will be good next year. Not 116 wins good, but win the AL East and be better positioned at the end of the year than they were in 2022.

And I think they're in a position to stay good for 2-4 years if young guys coming up (Volpe & Peraza) to go along with more "cap space" after 2023.

I think they'll be good too, but I think their offense needs to change. Station to station isn't going to get it done in my opinion.

it's a terrible contract no doubt about it, this is just a general aside:

I'm not sure if the salary inflation can possibly continue, but one thing I think people underestimate on these long contracts is that $40M nine years from now won't be as big of a deal if things continue to trend in this direction.

Nine years ago A-Rod's $28 million was the highest salary in baseball. That's not even 65% of Max Scherzer's salary this year.

I can't imagine any universe in which a near 40 year old Judge is going to be worth 65% of the max, but that's another topic.

For sure they're going to be good. And when these contracts become bad ones they will just spend more money.

If Ohtani has another year this year like his past two years, his contract will be insane.

I am of the opinion the Yankees should have let Judge walk to San Fran, took the beating from fans for a year, and signed Ohtani next year.

Two birds with one stone for them. And Ohtani with that short porch…
