JV is not signing with the Rangers.
If they offer 3/120 fully guaranteed while Houston, LA, etc offer 2/75 M with the 2nd year being a vesting player option, why wouldn't he sign with them? They're going to have to come over the top, but they might if they can't land deGrom, Rodon, and maybe Bassit/Eovaldi.
My gut tells me Crane wont let that happen. He would get ripped if he let JV go to the Rangers as it would be viewed as Nolan all over again.

He would be an idiot to pay JV 120 M for years 40, 41, and 42, especially with our pitching staff. That would also eat into our 2025 payroll when we need to pay Bregman & Altuve.

I dont disagree. I just think he knows how bad the optics would be and he cant let that happen.

Rock, meet hard place.

There would be no bad optics if JV walked for an absurd deal like that.

Totally agree. And what world series was rogers watching where JV "dominated"??

"Rogers: Dodgers, two years, $83 million. I really wanted to pick the Rangers but Verlander will end up where the playoffs are a sure thing. Houston has so much pitching, they'll pass on tying up that kind of money even if it's just for two years. Los Angeles, on the other hand, needs to assure itself of October success. Verlander can help with that, finally having proved he can dominate in the World Series. It seems like a perfect fit."

When you say "offensive WAR" do you just mean WAR for position players? That covers a lot that isn't offense.
Just going with the heading on baseball reference. According to them that means "everything but fielding."

On Fangraphs, the headings are Bat WAR, Pit WAR, Total War. I just sorted highest to lowest on Bat WAR. They don't have a definition, but I also assume it's "everything but fielding."
Getting caught up on this thread....but my understanding is WAR takes into consideration the position played, correct? So looking at offensive (Bat) WAR, a RF with the exact same stat line would have a higher WAR than a DH. Right?

This is where I think the WAR arguments falls apart comparing Ohtani to Judge. Yes, you can add Ohtani's pitching WAR to his hitting WAR. But you're still never accounting for his value in being a pitcher that can hit. He's not your standard liability in the field so taking a DH spot that WAR accounts for. He's actually opening up an extra roster spot (and $$$).

No issues with Judge winning. But, if I were voting, it would have been Ohtani.

Y'all act like Gallo is the worst player in baseball. I don't care if you strike out 65% of the time if those other 35% of the time your walking and hitting bombs.

From 2017 to 2021 Gallo has a 117 OPS+ with 2020 as the only "bad" season - 87 OPS+. A few tweaks and he could be that guy again.

I hope we resign our pitchers including JV and can keep Brantly and Yuli and add another bat hopefully at 1st, gonna need a catcher also.. this may take a while as these players shop around to get their value

I would think whoever is on the playoff rosters. I would assume the 507k is only for those on the DS, CS, and WS rosters.

I agree that we probably won't. We'll role with Machete, Lee/Diaz, and then likely seek another catch at trade deadline if neither are cutting it.

Below is the full breakdown of postseason shares for all 12 of this year's participants. Each team's number of full shares is listed in parentheses:
Astros: $516,347 (59)
Phillies: $296,255 (72)
Padres: $152,709 (70)
Yankees: $145,820 (72)
Guardians: $45,795 (60)
Braves: $44,878 (60)
Mariners: $42,221 (69)
Dodgers: $36,148 (82)
Cardinals: $10,351 (63)
Blue Jays: $10,007 (68)
Mets: $9,480 (68)
Rays: $8,387 (79)

edit, info from wiki:
the division of the team's share of the pool is voted upon by the players who have been on the team during the entire regular season, in a meeting chaired by their union representative. This meeting follows the trade deadline on July 31. Players who have been with the team for the full season automatically receive a full share. At the meeting, the full-season players vote on whether anyone elseincluding players who have not been with the team for the full season, coaches, and trainersis to be granted a full share, less than a full share, a cash award, or no share. After the World Series, the pool of money is split according to the shares determined in the vote. There is no limit to the number of shares that may be granted, but a greater number of shares dilutes the value of each share, and consequently the amount each player is awarded.

Probably correct .. go with the catchers we have and get 1 more bat .. we really need to resign all these pitchers though .. they were our key to winning this time around, our bats need a little help but not much.. I'd prefer the pitching and keep who we have in the field .. a first baseman would be nice, but we just need someone to relieve Yuli assuming we can keep his bat

I get it - I really do. I don't think he's really a mesh with our team which is generally low-strikeout / high-contact.

I just am curious if the shift has made him MORE of a three-outcome guy than he would be otherwise. Is he more likely to get the ball in play if he knows there's not a deep second baseman over there taking away all of his prime real estate?

Over the last 5 seasons, he's hit the ball 189 times with LA >-10 and <20 for an out. I am fairly confident this would result in quite a few more hits.

Over the last 5 years Gallo has a BA of .199. If 10% of these are hits, his BA jumps 10 points. so .209... who cares, right? but this also jumps his OBP to about .336. A .336 OBP would put him ahead of 2022 Tucker, McCormick, Pena (by a lot), etc.

He's flawed, but he's not useless.
