I'm assuming he wants a 10 year deal.

So at 10 years it's not enough per year and he doesn't want anything less than 10 years.

Lot of assumptions on my part but I'm just thinking it's gonna take a 10 year deal.

Giving him a 10 year deal seems monumentally dumb… I hope the Yankees do it

How often do players have the kind of early success Bellinger had, then completely fall off a cliff for multiple years, and THEN regain their success?

I do not want a player like him, and as always, he can EAD
When its injury-related, it can happen. He's also only 27. The most similar player statistically in history at the same age is Reggie Jackson. All those things make it worth the lottery ticket for the right team. If you're Oakland or Detroit, why not?

That said, most likely outcome is that he's never again what he was, and Dodgers certainly think that. Of course the Dodgers also thought Yordan was worth a bucket of balls, so…

So, it's apparent we all sold our Aggie football souls for the WS ring the year.
No regrets.

None whatsoever. I'd shutter the program for another couple World Series.

Absolutely. I think someone will.

And maybe I'm wrong but I just feel like he has so much leverage he'll be able to get it.

As the Astros thread expert on Tucker vs. Realmuto, what are your thoughts post-WS?

Not asking in any sort of "trash talk" way. Genuinely curious.
I was thinking a lot about that during the series.

Obviously Tuckers future is brighter and from here forward you want Tucker all day long. The only way it was even a consideration to get in the DeLorean and make the trade is if we never win a title with Tucker…wondering if all of the very close calls in the WS might have gone a different way with Realmuto at catcher.

Now that we have won one with Tucker, its a moot point IMO.

Do you agree?

Got Hinched because we never played Tucker.

Reddout got the playing time

I still say that series could have gone differently had we started Tucker, I was his biggest fanboy at the time and a huge portion of posters here wanted to trade him
I 100% wanted to trade him.

But I have been a Framber guy since day 1. Even when Farmer and the advanced stats were against me.

My takes are fire every time 60% of the time.

OK enough Aggie loathing about how we would sacrifice that program for the Stros, we get it. Just baseball talk please, thank you.

Tucker was mentioned in trade rumors for Chris Sale, JT Realemunto, Thor, and others. A lot of people wanted JT.
Love King Tuck, but trading for JT still might have been the correct move if it was possible. No complaints with how things have worked out though, obviously.

Curious your thinking. We won the WS. How was keeping Tucker not the correct move?
I don't think that's a crazy thing to say. Theres a chance that with Realmuto we'd have 4 rings.

You've got to think that the upgrade of Realmuto over our catchers would be greater than the downgrade in RF. I mean in 2022 Realmuto + Chas > Tucker + Maldy. Insert whoever we'd have picked up to replace Tucker and that formula is true - especially early on when Tuck wasn't the stud he is now.

But there's also a chance we wouldn't have won a single one after 2017 and Tucker from here forward is almost a lock to be more valuable.

How do you win 4 rings in 2 seasons tho?

Your man just had a sub 600 OPS in his only WS.
Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He would have re-signed. Just like he did in PHI. I didn't say he would have 4 rings. I said we (the Astros) would.

Realmuto had a bad WS…but Tucker's world Series OPS was .325 after game 1, which of course we lost. So lets not act like he won it for us.

We would have won this year with either guy.

And I love Tucker so don't make it about defending him - you don't have to, he's one of the best in the game. He also made contributions beyond going 1 for 16 games 2-6 and like I said, I would not go back in time and make the trade. I'm damn glad we have him.

I'm just saying it's not crazy to think it might (or might not) have been a good trade for us.

So let's play hypothetical with WS 2019 and 2021 with this trade

2019: our pitching failed us games 1, 2 and 6. We would have lost even if we had Realmuto. Also from the catcher position we got 2 HR that series.

2021: Maldonado actually had a good WS driving in key runs but we just ran out of pitching. We lose that series as well with Realmuto

So IMO. Would have still have 2 rings so give me Tucker under team control through 2025 all day

Theres really just no way to know what would have happened. Maybe Realmuto goes off one game & and we win.

Doesn't matter. Bottom line is we won this year and Tucker is a far better value (if not player) moving forward.

Also no way to know if Relamuto would have still been on the team in 2022.

I'd have loved that trade too, but seems to have worked out fine without it.

What makes you think he would have signed? We didn't show any interest when he was a FA. We didn't ink Morton, Cole, Greinke, Springer, or Correa. Odds are JT would have been gone too.

Right we won't know what would have happened in the playoffs but we have an idea of the regular season. It would have been 6 WAR over 2 years (one shortened) vs 6 plus (one partial, one shortened) of an estimated 28 WAR (conservatively guessing ~5 WAR per over the next 3)

I don't think we would have traded Tucker for him and not tried to keep him.

I think he would have stayed as long as we made a good offer. The guys above arent good comps. Their best baseball was all behind them. The org has kept players in their prime who were reasonable with their demands.

$23M is a very reasonable salary for the best catcher in baseball.

2022: gold glove, silver slugger, 7th in MVP race, 6.5 WAR

We could go back and forth all day. You're not going to change my mind and vice versa. I love Tuck and I'm not big on Realmuto for any other reason that he would have improved us so much at our worst position.

As you like to say, for me it's just a math problem…whereas I think you have Eros love for Tucker.

I'm curious, how much does a player's personality factor into you deciding if you want a player to join the Astros? And I'm not talking about how you think he might fit into the clubhouse, just whether or not you like him. For me, I don't think I could make myself cheer for Bellinger in an Astros uniform.

Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If anything, I think the trade probably wasn't that close to actually happening because it goes against the org. MO to trade good young players for short-term rentals.

If they did make the trade, it would have been with a plan to keep Realmuto like the Phillies did.

Yup, a simple math problem

Tucker will end up with a WAR close to 30 for 40 M.

JT will have a WAR slightly higher and cost 130 M.

The difference in money allowed us to resign Brantley & JV.

Tucker, Brantley, & JV > JT

We paid an injured JV more than Realmuto for 2 years and got literally nothing in return. Mikes salary was reasonable enough that we would have signed him anyway. I mean we still had money to blow on stiffs like Odorizzi, right?

I agree with some of your points, but JV didn't do isht for us in 20 or 21.

Very good chance that the Astros would not have signed him in 20/21 if they knew he would only give them 6 innings

Almost certain in fact

  • I was confused because the video makes it look like the pitcher hits the runner and Cabrera is a SS
  • Pretty good left hook for a right-hander
  • Would love to know what the umps are discussing at the end
  • I thought pimping home runs was OK there and came from Latin American baseball

Yes obviously jokester, but that's not the point.

The point is don't tell me not trading for Realmuto allowed us to sign JV which made us better…When JV didn't give us squat for 2 years.

I'd seriously rather become a Rangers fan, move back in with my Mom and buy a 3 Series BMW than watch Cody Bellinger play for the team I've watched for over 35 years.

I was there watching JV blow Tuckers epic game 1.

Of course I agree with you after the way things have played out. And its pretty dumb to argue about a trade that probably wasn't even close to happening and then speculating about what if alternate universe scenarios after that imaginary trade.

Mostly its just nice to imagine what this team would be like with a catcher that can hit.
