It's not recency bias. MVP, sustained playoff success, 3 homers in a playoff game, walkoffs, he's done it all. And not done.

Keep in mind nostalgia is a thing too. We sometimes romanticize Biggio.

I'm afraid I have to agree. As much as I respect Biggio and Bagwell it's a fact that their post-season stats are a stain on their careers. Last year we saw Altuve go into a post- season slump as bad as either of them but by the end of the ALCS he shook it off and helped the Astros win. Those two guys could never seem to do that.

Altuve May literally be the all time postseason Hr leader in a few years

Ridiculous

Hardest hit ball I've ever witnessed was hit by Bob Watson off David Clyde in the dome. Low turnout, so we moved behind home plate. Watson crushed a low hooking, knuckling line drive that went between SS Toby Harrah's legs on the fly and ended up as a double is the gap. Harrah's face lost all color. Probably had to change pants. Late exhibition game right before the opener, circa '73 or '74.

Pinder > Dubon, btw
Wow, that had to be a viscous line drive. I still feel bad for David Clyde, I don't know what else the Rangers could have done to scuttle any chance he had of a good career.

Proud Westchester Wildcat here.
Went to the old stadium in Arlington to watch him pitch in his first game - the first sellout for the Rangers there.

On Pinder:. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/03/reds-release-chad-pinder.html

Unfortunately, the 2022 season was one of the least-productive of his six-year big league career (.235/.263/.385 in 379 plate appearances). Spring training with his new club didn't go any better, as Pinder was just 4-for-39 with nine strikeouts in 42 plate appearances over 15 games. Overall, he slashed just .103/.167/.154 in this spring's small sample of at-bats.

We aren't signing him. If you can't cut it for the reds you are washed up.

The fact that someone even has to post this is crazy.

The olds holding on and promoting Bigg/Bag on the level of Altuve sound like Rangers fans in their delusion

And that's exactly why they rushed him into the majors.

I think Altuve's greatness goes beyond his personal stats. It's about his leadership as well. Bagwell and Biggio were the leaders of their teams. Think about that sign they hung "Work hard or go home". If they played tight in the playoffs is it any wonder that their teammates reflected that?

Even during Altuve's oh for twenty something to begin post season last year he was still being himself, keeping the team keep loose, helping them win.

Brooks Raley was traded for by Houston after getting DFA'd by the Reds… never say never

Recency bias. Thank you. I racked my brain trying to come up with that and couldn't.

And while I get what you're saying. Craig and he didn't play on the same teams so it's hard to judge but until they both have their plaque in Cooperstown Jose is second at best

For me

Because they didn't have an additional team and lights out arms to carry the team while they struggled.

You can't give Jose credit for coming around in the second round without pointing out that he didn't do anything to help the team get there.

OK, I guess you completely reject my argument about what Altuve's leadership means to the team. That's fine, just an honest disagreement. I wonder what his teammates would say about it though.

I'm an old. Love the killer Bs. TBH will probably always love them more than this generation of Stros just because of nostalgia…

But they were absolute playoff chokers and if they had been even a remote semblance of themselves in the playoffs they would have a couple of rings as well.

If they had played well and just didn't have the supporting cast, I'd feel differently, but they did have great teams around them and just failed to get it done. There's no comparison between them and Altuve in my opinion.

I'm old too and feel the same way. 1998 was the killer. After the trade for Randy Johnson they really did have the team to win it all. But couldn't get it done.

I think it's different a little

This generation of Astros is better than their opposition in most of these playoff series

The Killer B generation was very much more evenly matched and on occasion underdogs in the playoffs...it took a while for them to find success, but that was reflective of their inability to breakthrough as underdogs
Harry Dunne

Yep. That was a great squad. No fault of the big unit either. He gave them a couple of great postseason starts and got zero support.

I'd like to see the evidence on that, but even if it's true it's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. You tend to be the underdog when your best two players hit like Niko Goodrum in the playoffs and everyone knows it.

If Biggio performed in the postseason like Altuve has then it wouldn't be a debate.

Altuve is the greatest Astro of all time due to his accolades but also his postseason numbers. Biggio was largely a non-factor in about half of his playoff games.

I guess my biggest factor is the longevity numbers for Craig.

When Altuve retires and we're talking overall numbers, if he's at 3000 and the playoff stats yes it's not a competition at that point.

More based on regular season wins

1998 the exception, but even that year featured 3 100 win NL teams

I grew up in the 90s with Bagwell as a hero and Biggio a close second.

With that said, Altuve is not only the best player in franchise history but also my favorite player by far.

Lots of nostalgia for the Killer B's but Altuve is so much more fun to watch and root for.

He's more fun, and funnier too. Remember during the playoffs last year when the camera caught him in the dugout sitting next to the water cooler, unstacking the paper cups on the cooler, then restacking them like he wanted. Like a child might do.

I have a nephew who played baseball for Brazoswood one year they won state. Had a teammate that made it to the show. Don't know his name, but here's the story. He reached second base against the Astros and took the chance to tell Biggio he was his childhood baseball idol. Biggio ignored him. Then after the game found the young player and explained that he wasn't trying to be unfriendly, he just didn't want anything to distract him. Altuve? Probably would have hugged the guy and been his best friend that minute. Two difficult approaches, both worked in their own way.

Biggio played in 40 playoff games. He hit 2 homers.

Altuve hit 3 in his 7th game.

Biggio hung on much longer than he should have because he knew 3000 was automatic admission. Longevity is nice but rings are nicer.
