There are rumors he could pitch in late September and the playoffs, but his innings limit would definitely be an issue. He is an "ace" though if he's healthy, and I think he is difference maker.

What do we have in 2023?

Between Commits, Arbs, and Serfs... the 2023 Rangers payroll projects to be $97M.

Coming off the books:
Odor ($8.25M), Andrus ($7.25M)
Perez ($4M), Arihara ($3.1M), Moore ($2.5M), Culberson ($1.75M),

Options: Leclerc and Calhoun (Doubt option is picked up)

Serfs:
Dunning (SP), Otto (SP), Ragans (SP), Howard
Burke (RP), King (RP), Barlow (RP), Sborz, Alexy
Heim (C), Ibanez, Duran, Huff, Mathias, Smith
Garcia (OF), Taveras (OF), Thompson (OF), White

For those I believe will be on the 25 and in lineup, I've placed their role.

We likely have 7 of 14 starters and 10 on the 25 in 2023 that are Serfs. 3B, whether Ibanez, Smith, or Jung... is likely another.

Those being paid?
Seager (SS): $35.5M
Semien (2B): $26.0M
Gray (SP): $15M
Miller (Ut): $4M <- Do we keep him? Unlikely.

That leaves: SP1, 1B (Lowe-Arb1), 3B, DH

I'm pretty critical of JD, but that this is a pretty good place to be.

This can't be said enough.

If Jung is the man at 3rd - well, this looks really good for next year. Plenty of DHs rolling around out there each year. I like Lowe at 1st.

SP1 is a tough one. Here are the top 2023 UFAs ranked by projected market value.

Maybe... maybe not. 14 years, even at age 21 is a huge commit.

2 Serf years @ $700K = $1.4M
3 Arb years
9 FA years.

One site I saw showed 7 years of team control, but I'll stick with the 6.

Arb years are balanced, and who knows what that will be. If he signs at $210M, take out the 2 Serf years @ $1.4M and that is 12yrs and $207.9M. $17.3M. If he is making $400M?! Yikes.

J-Rod (21): 108 G, .269, 20 HR, 23 SB, 123 SO, .328 OBP
Odor (22): 150 G, .271, 33 HR, 14 SB, 135 SO, .296 OBP
Tatis Jr (21): 130 G, .282, 42 HR, 25 SB, 153 SO, .364 OBP <- This guy just positive for PED and will make over $36M/yr from age 30 to 35.

I'm a big fan of buying out a couple Arb years, but to buy out Serf years, IMO, is incredibly risky.

<Adjusted numbers because this is a Serf year and I had calculated like he had 3 more Serf yrs, as opposed to 2 more>

I definitely get the risk involved. But I also respect some of these teams desires to reset the market in a way by paying guys they think are superstars for their prime years, and then either dump or renegotiate for lesser term when they are 32 and 33 years old. The baseball model of player contracts/control is so broken as is by paying 30+ year old guys their first contracts for massive money. Corey Seager should've been able to be a free agent getting a massive contract at 24-25, not 28 years old! I do get the risk no doubt, but I respect these teams trying to do something different.

Man, if you can get Syndergaard for $16m a year I say you absolutely do that. A local kid from Mansfield who went to DBU? Sign me up.

For some reason I thought he signed an extension when he was traded to the Phillies, but good to hear that wasn't the case. My main concern here is he's got a pretty good ERA (3.78) and WHIP (1.23) this year but I wish he could eat more innings than he currently doing. He's averaging 5.5 innings per start, which I guess isn't bad. And has 26 walks through 19 starts.

Am I crazy in thinking that $16mil would be an absolute steal for him? Not to mention he has the name recognition to at least generate some buzz.

Tyler Glasnow (via trade) is a guy I'd be very interested in too. He's coming off of TJ, but he's a stud and Tampa doesn't usually pay their players. I believe they've already made it known that they won't be resigning him as well, or something along those lines.

I guess we can cross Glasnow off the list, he just got an extension, albeit just one additional year (he was going to be a free agent after 2023):

I'd be interested in Syndergaard. Would need the Dr's to get a look at the medicals before going all in through. He's be hurt a decent amount the past few years it seems.

It would cost a boat-load, but lets do it! A legit #1 SP on the open market would draw some crazy offers, especially with a New York team not wanting to lose him (I would assume).

Glasnow looks good for both. $5M and $25M. Two yrs $30M... AAV @ $15M

$15M would be my target for Perez, as well. 3-5 yrs would seem safe and something you can work around.

JRod contract looks pretty complicated.

My concern about signing a big long FA SP contract is how risky they are. The team is going to have to be willing to accept dead money. 5yr SP contract will likely see 1-2 bad seasons.

I'd still like the idea of trading off some prospects for a SP with 2 yrs or so control.

Waiting on some football this morning, so I decided to go to baseball reference and look at some stats for the scorching hot Nathaniel Lowe. From a 10,000-foot view, Nathaniel Lowe's stats are fantastic; his extended slash line is .298/.348/.492/.840/139 (OPS+). I was somewhat surprised that his OPS+ wasn't 150 or more, and that his WAR was only 2.3, but I believe that there are a few statistics that are holding him back or are his bugaboos.

The glaring issue for his total WAR is his defensive WAR. His dWAR is -1.5, while his oWAR is 3.2. Now I fully understand that Lowe is an average first baseman, but a -1.5 WAR on defense? That's tough. I personally don't love the defensive metrics either and how they calculate dWAR. So I understand that Lowe is an average 1st baseman, but I don't believe he is -1.5 WAR bad.

In terms of his OPS+ and oWAR, they are very good, but I believe that his strikeout and base on balls % really hold him back from the next tier. His SO% is 23 and his BB% is 6.7. Although those aren't the worst, they definitely aren't good. If he could bring his SO% to 17 and his BB% to 10, I think his overall numbers would jump into the next level of players! It would be nice if he had more RBI's as well. Having said that, Lowe is still having a fantastic season and it has been incredibly fun to watch this year! Keep doing it!

Nice breakdown! There are definitely some areas where Lowe could improve that would take him into the next tier. I've been very impressed by the improvements he's made this year.

Bubba Thompson is T83 in SBs with 7. OH... in 19 G. Projects to 60 SB.

20 total SB (36 Remain) would put him T-10 iwth Trea Turner who has 124 G.

His .274 average (.328 OBP) should keep him in the lineup... if only against slow delivering SPs.

He fast.

Lowe is having a great season and is a really good hitter. He's not a good 1st baseman, below average actually, and those stats show that. We can live with his defensive shortcomings if he keeps hitting, but let's accept his defense for what it is.

Bubba Thompson is essentially tied for the fastest player in the MLB. His base running is also very very good imo. Just because you're fast doesn't mean you're a good baserunner.
