And comparing Bregman to Jung is just silly.

One was the overall number 2 pick, the other was #8. That is worlds apart in baseball.
To this point, I read an article a while back that I'll try to find again....basically it researched the MLB draft, and examined the hit/miss rate of player drafted by position in the draft.

The drop off after about picks #5 or 6 in the 1st round was pretty dramatic, and it went on to say that in a given year there's usually less than a handful of sure-fire, can't-miss prospects in the draft, and the rest of it is up for grabs.

The MLB draft isn't the NFL or NBA drafts, where there's 30 or so top-tier players who are very projectable. Possibly more than any other sport, baseball depends on player evaluation and development. Regarding the Rangers, I have been critical for years in the way they've evaluated and subsequently prioritized players, particularly as it applies to pitching. Not enough big arms. Their position player emphasis was misguided for quite a while as well IMO, focusing too much on raw athletes and "upside", instead of actual fielding prowess and bat-to-ball skills.

I'm hopeful that the changes I've noticed since CY came on board will continue.

Good lord Cole Winn has fallen off the wagon in a major way. I'm talking OU tipping the Sooner Schooner over, bad.

I think what the Astros did was really bad for baseball as a whole (and it's ultimately led to changes in how the draft operates), but their strategy was completely based around that if you are going to tank for a few years, it better not be for pick #3/4/5 or the like because that is still a pretty decent crapshoot.

Agreed, and I would also argue that if you look at baseball from a historical perspective, having picks in the top of the draft hasn't necessarily been a pathway to the world series. Again, it's not like football, where having the top pick 3 years in a row can completely transform your franchise. Hell, the Orioles have had top picks for years, and they still haven't put it together. Winning teams typically have a blend of home-grown talent and players acquired through trades or free-agency. You can't really draft your way to a championship in baseball, it hasn't ever and likely never will work like that. The Astros were a huge anomaly, and let's be honest....there was some other shady stuff going on there that helped them get over the top.

Dallas Keuchel threw a gem last night in AAA. 7 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 6 K and no runs. His ERA in AAA is 2.31 - I would imagine they'll call him up soon, just to see where he's at. Might be a good 4 or 5 spot guy next season if he can straighten himself out.

Good outing from Otto tonight. The first game in a while that I've watched from start to finish. I think 2010-2011 ruined the Rangers for me, being so close, I just kind of gave up on baseball after that. But I'm liking some of these young guys and I'm hoping they can get me interested in Rangers baseball again. For some of you guys that know more than me, I've got a couple of questions about the future of this team.

1. I like Bubba Thompson's speed and defense, but will his bat produce enough offense to make him a legit full-time outfielder in this lineup?

2. Do we have young outfield power bats that we're expecting to be major league ready in '23-'24?

3. Any ideas of which starting pitchers we should target in free agency this offseason?

Making my annual trip to watch the Rangers on the road this week. I'm in Monument, CO where we'll visit family for a few days and see the Rangers at Coors Field Wednesday afternoon.

I'll post pics - we're right behind the Rangers dugout.

You'll get more than 1 opinion, I'd suspect, so I'll throw mine out.

1. Time will tell. I think at worse he is a PH/PR and late game substitution. If Taveras (CF-23) continues to show his belongs and you take Adolis (RF-29)... that's a pretty good start at a cheap and productive OF. Like Bubba, all 3 are Serfs next year. Adolis becomes Arb in 2024, so he still has 4 years of team control.

With his speed, Bubba likely has a floor as a Utility OF and PR in playoff situations.

2. The Rangers have a stockpile of 2B/LF journeymen that have varying holes in their game. Evan Carter was a 2020 draftee. A guy very few people knew about and I criticized the Rangers for picking him in the 2nd Rd. Dude looks legit and if he continues to develop, I think many are going to wonder how in the world the Rangers got him.

He is 19 at A+ hitting .288, .288 OB, 11 HR, 10 3B, 24 SB. Projected to be at MLB in 2024 at the age of 21 and looks like he could be a 5-Tool guy.

From the link:
Quote:

He not only possesses plus speed but Carter also has the instincts to steal bases and chase down balls in center field. His arm strength grades as average to solid, so he's capable at all three outfield positions. The valedictorian of his high school class, he stands out with his intelligence and makeup in addition to his tools.
Dustin Harris could be one to watch, as well.

I don't think the Rangers will go after a LF in FA, but they could.

3. First SP I'd like to see them go after is their own Martin Perez. He is #7 in AL ERA and has had a solid year. Question most have is whether he has turned the corner to be a legit SP. His problem has always been that he starts to get into trouble and then falls apart. This season he has been able to make the minor corrections to get out of jams and it shows in his numbers.

Gray was signed this past off-season and is controlled for 3 more years. He is likely a #3... if he stays healthy.
Dunning is likely a #4/5. Rangers have 4 more years of control for him.

So, if the Rangers sign Perez, they have 3 solid SPs.

Otto has really come on. In his 6 GS since the ASB he is 3.27, 1.273 WHIP, 33.0 IP, 24 SO. He could fill the 5th SP role... or better.

Now it becomes dicey. We have 3-4 guys that are great prospects. Ragans, Leiter, Rocker, White, Winn... could all become legit SPs as soon as 2024.

So, if we go out and sign a big SP for big money, in addition to Perez, we won't have enough Starts for all the arms. Great place to be... IF... big IF... they all develop.

Leiter was projected to have a ceiling of a #1/#2. Rocker equally as talented.

1. Bubba has pleasantly surprised me since his call up. His calling card is speed and defense, but he has put bat to ball better than I thought he would. I am still not sure what his long term projection is, because he does strikeout at a decent rate and he needs to hit for more power. Most of his hits have been singles. Now, power does come with time at the MLB level for most guys, but our outfield in general needs to slug more and drive more runs in. My guess is that Bubba is a solid defense first outfielder who comes off the bench or what you would say is the fourth outfielder. The same can be said for Leody, but I think Leody has considerably more upside as a hitter.

2. Evan Carter is kind of the guy right now. Many scouts and people around prospects believe he is our best guy. Five tool outfielder who is 19 and absolutely killing high A right now. If he continues like he is, we could see him as a September call-up in 2023 or fighting to get on the team in 2024, he's that good. I suspect he'll start with AA Frisco next season.

A few other names to know, in terms of outfielders who profile as hit first, are Aaron Zavala and Alejandro Osuna. Both are corner outfielders who can hit more power. Zavala is 22 or something like that and Osuna is 18 or so, Zavala could be viewed as more of a long shot, whereas Osuna still has plenty of time to develop.

3. As for pitchers we could go after, if Carlos Rodon doesn't utilize his player option for 2023 I would be all in on going after him. He's having a great season this year, but he's also been good the past 4 years or so. Rodon is 29 and I would be totally fine giving him 20-25 for 4 years. We should also sign Perez, but I don't want to give him any more than 15 for 3 years. Noah Syndergaard is another guy we could go after in the same way as Rodon. He's 29 and we maybe could get him for 15-20 because of the year he's had. Id be comfortable giving him 4 years as well. There's plenty of other guys I like too, but It all depends on who uses or doesn't use team/club options. I do believe that we need to go out and spend on another good starting pitcher though.

Potential Rotation for 2022 if we sign a pitcher:

1/2/3: Jon Gray and or Rodon/Syndergaard/Perez
4: Dunning
5: Rookie/Young guy who grabs the spot by the horns.

I think it may be more likely that the Rangers trade for a SP than sign a FA. Firstly because the pool of FA pitchers isn't particularly strong IIRC, and secondly because we have a lot of prospects we probably need to move - either because we have too many (middle infielders) or because they're Rule 5 guys.

That is a good point and something I could definitely see them doing. I wouldn't even be opposed to them trading guys like Ragans, Winn, and White along with the middle infield guys to get a high level pitcher.

Yeah, I thought he was safe and went to do something in the garage. Surprised they changed that to an out. At least I didn't see a view to overturn it. Maybe there was another view I didn't see.
