I hear spending too much time on F16 can do that to you....

Ragans expected to make his MLB debut tomorrow night against the White Sox

I like it. Lets see how he does and if he may be ready to contribute at the MLB level in 2023.
Like many, I'm anxious to see how some of these guys do.

I'm hoping we can extend Perez for around 3yr/$15-20M per...

I'm curious if keeping Matt Moore might open up extending him. Had a great season in the BP, but he was a lifelong SP. It'd be interesting to see if there is mutual interest to stretch him back out.

Who do we dump? Sborz or Richards?!

Yes to both

I would hope that we can find upgrades for both this off-season. Sborz has always struck me as someone who topped out at AAA, but maybe he will figure it out someday at the MLB level. He did have some impressive AAA stats they flashed on the screen when he came in last night, remains to be seen if it will ever translate into MLB success.

His biggest problem IMO is consistency. He'll come in one day and dominate. Comes in a couple of days later and gives up 3-4 runs. You just never know which Sborz is going to show up.

Definitely going to tune in to see Ragans tomorrow. Excited to see how one of our "young core" pitchers does. The experience should be good for him one way or another

For as vocal as Martin Perez was about staying with the Rangers, am I the only one who thinks that desire will fade the closer he gets to being a FA? He is 31 and likely wants 3-4 yrs.

9 weeks.

It's hard to judge guys coming off of TJ. I don't know if it's really fair to be too critical until next season unfortunately.

Option for next year, IIRC. I think I posted about him, earlier today.

He didn't help himself.

Not positive (I've assigned that task to DallasAg 94 to verify for us ), but probably still another year or two of team control. I wouldn't worry about him or J. Hernandez, they are both just back from arm surgery, they just get some innings in and look towards being ready for a full season in 2023.

LeClerc feels like he's likely on his way out the door, either by trade or let go. He's been dreadful sense his return.

$6M Team Option, $750k Buyout

I'm guessing he gets $750k and the Rangers sign him to a cheap deal. I think he'd want to rehab with the Rangers and there is no reason the Rangers wouldn't just assume keep him for pennies.

Season sweep by the Orioles
First time the Rangers are winless in the season series against an AL opponent in franchise history.

Bullpen is shot. This is why you can't afford to baby starting pitchers. There have been many games this season where the starter was pulled after 80-90 pitches, 5 or 6 innings. When did 90 pitches be the target? It was just a couple of seasons ago starters would regularly through 100-120 or so.

And if that's the way Woodward is going to manage (and the way the organization wants him to baby pitchers), then JD/CY need to re-evaluate the way they prioritize bullpen arms. Can't afford to just throw a bunch of guys out there and hope somebody steps up because they don't want to spend any money on the bullpen.

100 PC became the ceiling a year or two ago. It is across MLB, not just the Rangers.

If a SP is at 85-90 ending an inning, they often get pulled.

I think MLB is trying to figure out the TJ issue.

Speaking of TJ... I believe he lives in Ft Worth, now. Too bad he didn't trademark "Tommy John Surgery."

No idea if it makes sense or not, but I wonder if it has anything to do with the quest for higher spin rates. I know sticky stuff was part of that, but they've got to be doing stuff mechanically as well I'd think. It's just odd that they already don't pitch as much as they used to, but are getting hurt at a higher clip.

This could definitely be apart of it. I think the quest for velocity and high spin rates have ruined a huge part of the game.

I was wondering about velocity as well. I know they take the readings from a different spot, but there are a whole lot more "power pitchers" than there were before.

Of course, even if you determine that's the issue, what can you even do about it? I'd imagine it ends up being chalked up to the cost of doing business in the end. Especially given how much better surgical techniques have gotten. I mean, Verlander's 39 and came back throwing at least as hard as he had been.

In regards to what you can do about it as a hitter, not much. Shorten up, get tight with your swing and just make contact. But I think we're headed towards a place where the MLB experiments with moving the rubber back 12" or something like that.

LOL. This franchise. When Seattle and Baltimore send you to the showers you know your rudder is broken.

It definitely sucks, however, Seattle is a much better team these days and have invested significantly in their team. Plus they have some home grown studs. The Orioles are more disappointing to lose too, as their team still doesn't scream ".500 or better," even though they too now have some good homegrown talent getting involved.

Foscue cranks grand slam on 3-hit night (July 31)
Amid a slugfest between Double-A Frisco and Springfield, fourth-ranked Rangers prospect Justin Foscue clubbed a grand slam as part of a three-hit game in the RoughRiders' 14-12 win on the road.
MLB's No. 59 overall prospect lined an RBI single to center in the third before stepping to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth. Frisco was clinging to a two-run lead until Foscue jumped on a pitch on the outside half of the plate and deposited it over the fence in left for his second grand slam of the season. He added another base knock up the middle in the ninth to complete his day. It's the 23-year-old's fourth three-hit performance of the season and his second with five RBIs.
The 14th overall pick of the 2020 Draft, Foscue is batting .279 with a .810 OPS, six homers, 23 doubles, 31 walks and 45 RBIs in 65 games. -- Stephanie Sheehan

For Foscue in particular, his overall numbers are fine, good maybe? But for a guy with his profile he needs to be slugging a little more, and more home-runs.

MLB pitchers have been being used less and less, and the TJ rates only continue to rise, because hint: youth baseball is the cause. And it will continue to get worse until entities like USA Baseball, Perfect Game, etc. come out and say no tournaments or showcases from the months of August-December. But if they do that they won't get your money, so it will never happen.

I coach high school football and baseball and last year we had two seniors who are both committed to play baseball at small colleges. They would've made great football players, and both like football, but they said they wanted to "focus" on baseball and not get hurt in football. So, what happens? One has an MCL go as he's rounding third base in the second game of the year. The other had TJ in November. They both feared getting hurt in football and they both got hurt in baseball and lost their senior years.

Multiply this by thousands and you have the current state of baseball. Kids getting awful advice led by scam select ball orgs stealing parents' money (there are a small percentage of very solid select ball orgs - don't get me wrong. But it is small.)

Youth sports are actually killing professionals sports because they are getting way too competitive at way too young of an age. Then throw in these shady select leagues.

FWIW - the team didn't put too much money into the bullpen because you can ALWAYS buy bullpen arms. Why waste the money this year since it was still a rebuilding year? Look for a major rebuilding of the bullpen this off season if we intend to compete next year.

My son quit baseball after his sophomore year due to all the elbow issues he had as a pitcher. Focused on football and went to college playing that.

Of course, got a bone in his back broken by a future first round draft choice offensive tackle and had to quit football. But had a lot of fun up until then.
