Honestly if you are going to have a losing record at least go for the #1 pick

Seattle up 1-0 in the 2nd

Sweet. Gotta keep losing, if we're going to get a good pick.

Thanks for the heads up.

So the question is... are we going to lose 1-0, 5-4, or 9-8? Regardless, I am pretty sure it'll be by one run.
I was going to throw out there... how do we lose by 1 Run, today?!

I think we go Extra Innings. 1st guy up Sac Bunts the runner from 2nd to 3rd. Then, our RP balks in the winning run.

It looks and feels like this team knows it's another chalked season.

if so, then we need to get rid of a few of the aging vets (Culberson/Calhoun/Millet/etc) and bring up more young blood and see what they can do.

I'd like to see Thompson and Ragans, maybe some others? I don't think Winn or Leiter are close enough to being ready, so leave them be in the minors until 2023.

You run the risk of the Young guys being hungry and doing well and spoiling your tank.

Problem is... 2023 draft will be set by a Lottery like the NBA:

Just bring in Brett Martin, no lead is safe with him lately

Winn has easily been the most disappointing player this year, perhaps in the entire organization. He's having a dreadful year in triple A. I was convinced he was going go kill it and then be up with the big boys by the all-star break. Woof, was that wrong.

His numbers are pretty disappointing.

Having said that... if you take out the two bad starts that he gave up 8ER in each... his other GS are a 4.50 ERA. And someone mentioned that league has elevated ERAs based on the ballparks.

So, maybe he is having a better season than feared.

Worst 3 teams get equal entry... so it doesn't matter.

If it's the worst three, Oakland, KC, Wash, and Cincy are the runaway leaders at this point. It would take some serious tanking to pass up two out of that group, to get into the final group of 3.

DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Worst 3 teams combine for a 50% chance at the #1 pick.

Current stats after Rangers Loss.

Nats <- Lost today
A's <- Won today
Reds
------
Tigers: 1.5 GB <- Won
Royals: 1.0 GB <- Lost
Pirates: 2.0 GB
Cubs: 2.5 GB
Angels: 4.0 GB <- Won beat Rockies
Rockies: 6.0 GB <- Lost to Angels
Rangers: 6.0 GB <- Lost

Easy Peasy...

If Nats dump Soto and Reds dump any or all 3 SPs... it is really about the A's.

I'd take a top 5-8 pick.

What do we have to dump?

FAs:
Perez needs his start after next in a different uniform.
Matt Moore: 34 G, 1.74 ERA

Burke (Serf3 in 2023): 32 G, 1.27 ERA, 49.2 IP, 52 SO
Bush (A3 in 2023): 38 G, 3.12 ERA

I know... you are probably thinking Burke needs to stay. I disagree. RP is fickle and our least important position is RP. 25 yo Lefty.

If Perez wants to pitch here in 2023, send him out for some return and resign him as a FA. We also get to see him in high leverage GS... playoff GS and that will benefit long-term.

At a minimum, let's get some prospects A/A+ that will be at AA next season that we can parlay into trade deadline returns.

Totally unrealistic take. Perez won't bring anything of long-term value, and history suggests the odds of getting a player to come back as a FA so soon after trading him are somewhere between slim and none.

I feel like Perez would have been traded by now. He's not going anywhere. He'll probably sign something like a 3 year deal with the Rangers
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
We still have a week. He had a bumpy couple of GS before the ASB.

Not sure if he gets traded, but I don't think the fact he hasn't been traded by now is any indication. It is still early and I think the Rangers weren't sure they were sellers. They should know for sure, now!

The Rangers would be incredibly stupid to trade Perez. There is no player they would get in return that would be of any value to the organization moving forward.

I agree. At some point, we have to start keeping proven starting pitchers.....especially those that want to be Rangers.

I disagree with actively tanking this year. Think there's something to be said for continuity between seasons and us at least staying semi-competitive gets our young guys some meaningful ABs/innings under their belts. Plus you give yourself a shot at some momentum heading into next year. If there's a good deal to be made for a controllable starter or bat, pull the trigger but if not, sit tight.

Granted, hard to tell the difference between tanking and how we look right now lol.
Tksymm7
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
This is exactly where I'm at. Try and be competitive the entire season. Try and carry some positivity and momentum into the offseason. Like you said, if you could get a controllable pitcher or hitter for a fair price, do it, but if not sit tight. There's also a chance that, if you are visibly trying to win and putting your best foot forward, then come the offseason you could attract a few more free agents.
AgBQ-00

Glad to be done with that series. Seattle is just smoking hot right now.

What I want to see the rest of the season is for the team to continue to compete. Don't want to tank, want to see them try and build some momentum into the offseason.
rbtexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
S
Unless you're one of the 3 or 4 worst teams in baseball, tanking makes no sense whatsoever. This isn't the NFL where having the #1 pick will make your team immediately better. The 1st two picks in this year's draft likely are 3-5 years from being in the majors.

We knew this wasn't going to be a playoff season. All we had a reasonable right to expect was better baseball and a more competitive team, and we've gotten that. Now is absolutely not the time to make a bunch of stupid knee-jerk trades.

That's what I've been sayin. Let's GO!
Proposition Joe
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm typically on the side of "gain whatever competitive advantage you can get" (read: tank), but with the current make up of the team, attempts to win the fan base back and most importantly attempts to lure players in free agency -- looking like a team close to competing based on their record rather than a team close to competing based on their draft status -- seems like a better plan.

And Soto ain't happening. We're just not in a position to do it from a farm system standpoint for what will amount to 1 useful season out of him.
Mr Gigem
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
When I say go all in on Soto, that also includes do what it takes to extend him. There is a need for a corner OF, and there won't be a FA this offseason that even comes close. If you want to jump in and make a run at the playoffs, then do it. Put your money where you mouth is
Proposition Joe
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Soto is going to test free agency. There's zero reason for him to commit long-term to a team that is 6+ years removed from a playoff appearance without hearing other offers.
rbtexan
How long do you want to ignore this user?
S
So here's another consideration. If the Rangers were to acquire/sign Soto, they would have 3 $100 million players on the roster. That's a hell of a lot of money tied up in 3 players for any team not named the Yankees.

My concern is that while it looks good, it will hamstring the team in being able to acquire the complementary pieces needed to win a championship.

* I don't think we get Soto regardless. I think some team will offer up a "wow" package of prospects that I just don't see the Rangers choosing to try to equal or better. If he does wind up somewhere else, it doesn't mean that the Rangers didn't try to get him though....they will have just determined that the price is just too steep.
