I don't like the idea of moving Adolis. We'd be going after Soto to fill the last OF spot. Giving up Adolis would be counterproductive

I think you guys are way undervaluing the package for Soto. They have 2+ years of team control. They don't need to move him. If we could pull it off, it might be something like Jack Leiter, Jung, Winn, Duran, and Nate Lowe.
Radio guys and some on here believe your package is way undervalued. It is a trap I fall into. I look at it like "Can we find enough talent to get a deal."

Personally, I think they are highly motivated to move him. The team is up for sale and there is certainty about the ability to compete for the next 2 years.

I don't recall the guy on the radio, he was saying SDP and STL are probably ahead of us.

SDP is likely starting with CJ Abrams (21-SS-MLB). In 42 G hitting .237, 2HRs. He was hitting .314, 7HR, 10 SB in 30G @ AAA this season. OBP of .364.

STL is likely starting with Jordan Walker (20-3B-AA). In 72 G, hitting .304, 8 HR, 15 SB, .392 OBP

Both are Top10 prospects that are position players and both considered likely All-Star type players.

Jung is 24 and (in their words) is viewed as a MLB 3B... but certainly no All-Star.

You're overvaluing it; if that's what they demand they're going to get nothing for him when he walks.

I didn't want to get involved until I heard Corbin was being moved with him. We should be able to put together a worthy package that will not set us back from competing soon.
There is another possibility and this would require a HUGE commitment from the Rangers.

Instead of Corbin... Taking Strasburg. Remaining 4yr @$35M per... PER. Repeat... PER.

He has been shutdown for the 2022 season and there is some rumblings he may continue to have issues. He has 8 GS in the past 3 seasons, so taking him is a 4yr/$35M anchor of no value.

Couple the $25M or so Soto gets next year (Arb3) and $30M+ in 2024 (Arb4) and you are adding $60-65M to add Soto. And then you still have 2 more years of Strasburg.

The Rangers would have a ridiculous $111M in Seager, Semien, Gray, and Strasburg. Add whatever it is Soto makes in 2023 AND 2024.

Strasburg has a full No-Trade Clause, so I'm not sure what is in it for him, other than maybe Income Tax. The Rangers have experience with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, so we have that.

If you're saying that we may not have enough, I agree with you. I probably would add Taveras to my original proposal. That still might not be enough. This is a Miguel Cabrera type deal with more team control.

I think we "have enough." The question is... do we have a guy the Nats would really be seeking as a headliner.

The trap I fall into is, we can offer a number of MLB level players: All of these guys are likely MLB contributors and will fill a role. Are any of these players other teams would be like, "You've gotta include that guy to get a deal done!"

When I think "Pick one of Jung/Duran/Smith" and add one of "Winn/White/Ragans" then I'm looking at diluted talent.

Are any of these more than Just-Another-Guy that likely plays MLB?!
#2. Jung (3B) - 24
#3. Duran (IF) - 23
#5. Winn (RHP) - 22
#6. O White (RHP) - 22
#7. D Harris (3B) - 23
#8. Smith (IF) - 24

Sam Huff
Taveras

Which of those guys are you looking at going "You can't trade that guy, we'll regret it."

Leiter is the only one I'd say, "Don't trade." Anyone else... pick what and as much as you want.

While we're at it... let's do a little dumpster diving.

I've said Priority 1 is extending Perez.

If we are working towards playoffs this year, we need another SP before adding anything else. So, here we go:

Starting with the Top 9 SPs and where they are relative to potential trades
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/07/the-market-for-rental-starters-is-on-shaky-ground.html

4. Luis Castillo (29-Cin): 13GS, 2.77, 78.0 IP <Arb3 next year>
5. Frankie Montas (29-Oak): 17GS, 3.26, 96.2 IP <Arb3 next year>
6. Tyler Mahle (27-Cin): 17GS, 4.48, 92.1 IP <Arb3 next yeear>
-
7. Quintana (33-Pit): 18GS, 3.99, 90.1 IP <on a 1yr $2M deal>
12. Perez <on a 1yr $4M deal>
17. Chad Kuhl (29-Col): 17GS, 4.11, 92.0 IP <on a 1yr $3M deal>
-
18. Lyles (29-Col) Not interested
21. Syndergaard (29-LAA): 14GS, 4.00, 74.1 IP <on a 1yr $21M>
38. Clevinger (31-SDP): 9GS, 3.50, 46.1 IP

My how some of these guys have fallen.

Top 3 are all Arbs next year.

Most of the rest are on a 1 yr deal. Guys who bet on themselves or had no other alternative.

Quintana has often been rumored over the years as a Rangers target.

What do you think it'll take to sign Perez? 3-4 years for 10-12? I honestly don't know what the market will be
DallasAg 94

I need a pet.

This is why the Rangers need to make some moves:
Rule V Guys:
Bubba Thompson (24)
Cole Ragans (24)
Alex Speas (24)

Guys who will be RuleV in Dec '22 and NOT on the 40.
AAA
Josh Jung
Wendzel
Winn

AA
Dustin Harris
Owen White
Blaine Crim

A+
Englert

Ragans (24), Winn (22), and White (22) will ALL 3 need to be added to the 40. And if you think Leiter and Rocker are in the mix, we might ought to trade some.

Info is best effort. Error-checking welcome.

IMO Crim and Speas should be exposed to the Rule 5, I don't see them as parts of a championship team. I don't even think Speas is still playing.

If y'all haven't listened to JD's interview today on the fan go listen to it. Pretty good stuff. They couldn't name names but it sure as hell sounds like they're looking at Soto and JD says ownership is willing to pay the money. Exciting to hear that at least.

As long as they pay for a couple more pitchers as well.

I feel pretty damn good about our odds of hitting on at least 3 of Leiter, Rocker, Winn, Ragans, White and Porter further down the road. Obviously if we end up trading for someone like Soto or a top of the rotation guy a few of those go away but I think everyone of them has ace potential/ top of the rotation potential. Been awhile since we've been this deep with pitching prospects.

JD has perfected the GM Speak. He talks a bunch, says nothing, and leaves the fan thinking they heard what they wanted to hear.

Admittedly... I'm not a big fan of JD. I used to be, but not much anymore.

What I heard was... expect guys like Dunning and Sam Dyson. Guys with multiple years of control. Role players. Guys most of us are not expecting.

I'm cynical.

Yes, you are being cynical. I was listening to it live and that wasn't my takeaway at all. I've heard many JD speeches, and you're right they have been full of coach speak. But this one felt way different in my opinion.

Thanks.

I saw he was on a special list and subsequently saw he was announced last month as a coach for a BB Academy.

As late as Aug 2021, looked like he was coming back from elbow issues. It seemed like he was trying to avoid TJ and was on a 4 month recovery. I wasn't sure if this was something he was doing while recovering or if he was done.

Either way, he isn't in jeopardy of being taken, so point noted.

There's a lot to potentially not like about Daniels, but the way he speaks?

He's a GM. There's zero upside to showing your hand one way or the other.

There's a reason public facing speeches in big business rarely give any strategy away.

If you're listening to his speeches hoping to get anything of significance regarding strategy, that's on you.

Feels a bit like a make-or-break stretch of the season before the All Star Break.

10 game homestand... Anything worse than 5-5 and you gotta figure the wheels are pretty much off this thing.

4-6 on the homestand... Not a complete death knell, but staring at a 11-game road trip to start the 2nd half pretty much means any moves we make should be geared solely towards 2023 and on, as this year is done as far as playoffs go.

There's like 19 wildcards this year so even a 0.500 team is still in the hunt.

That should have been the case regardless. Going after rentals would have been absurd unless we were somehow magically in first place in the division.

It shifts looking at guys with 1.5 years of control to more or less guys with 2.5+ years of team control.

I think this team finds a way to get to .500. But it will hinge I think on how this opening second half road trip will go. I'm just excited to still be watching baseball this year. It is a fun team to watch at least.

Maybe we're trading Semien for Soto and the Nats wanted to make sure he can still play SS. jk

Bigger question to me is, why not let Smith move to SS and Culberson to 3b, rather than Culberson to 2B?!

Is Smith likely 3B long-term?

Maybe Culberson is on the move and the Rangers want so ABs to showcase?! He is one of like 3 FAs after '22. Perez, Culberson, Matt Moore.

Semien is a better defensive SS than Smith. Also if Smith has a future as a starter on this team it won't be at SS or 2B....so why waste time putting him there when he can be getting reps where he's more likely to have a future

That's my question.

Smith (24) is hitting .220 with no power. I agree on this team he isn't a future MIF, but he could be for another team. I don't see him as a future / long-term 3B for any team.

I think he is a 3B on this team as a matter of convenience/need. He has played well defensively.
