I never said I thought it wasn't the right pick. I just said the responses where they stumble around on the type of surgery and Boras/Rocker say they aren't gonna talk about it was strange and at least raised some questions. The fact he's pitching again and throwing hard is huge for me. I think it's worth the risk.

Last post for this morning.

I thought I read where Porter was touting $6M needed to sign him. That's Top6 money.

Holliday and Jones were the Top 2, then you had a big group of solid talent. MANY of the top prospects were pedigrees and Porter was likely not getting as much attention.

Even Kumar Rocker's dad was an NFL DT, if I read that right. I didn't realize that.

1. Holliday - MLB son (HS)
2. Jones - MLB son (HS)
3. Rocker - NFL son
4. Tremarr - ? (HS)
5. Green - NFL TE (#1 pick?) (HS)
6. Berry - father played minors for Houston

The 5th HS player picked was Jett Williams at #14. A SS.

First HS P taken was at 1.15 - Dylan Lesko (Slot $.4.08M).

I said this earlier I think Boras was trying to get someone to bite on a Top 5 for Porter, knowing that once he got the Rangers to commit to Rocker, he'd have a fall back plan to get Porter the $4M of a mid-1st Rder.

Ok. One more post, then I gotta jump on a conf call. ROFL.

Sounds like you took my post a little more defensively than it was meant.

I read your as far more alarming than I probably should have and was relieved.

We just can't forget this organization once spent a 1st round pick on a pitcher with no UCL that they didn't realize. And the issue was so obvious that the team doctor then initially noticed it in a magazine cover picture. Different regime, but I have a long memory

Is Soto a serious option and consideration?

So far I've seen one article saying we could land him. IMO the only realistic shot we have is to throw all the money we've got at him when he hits free agency. Our farm system isn't terrible but I just don't feel like we'd have a realistic package that would be intriguing to the Nats

Oh, we've got the prospects. We'd just have to send so many of them to the Nats that it would potentially gut the farm system for years. Big gamble if for some reason acquiring Soto doesn't pan out (or if we were unable to sign him to an extension).

I've only seen the one article with Rangers in on Soto. Others I've read don't even mention us in top 10.

The way I see it the fact that we'd have to gut the farm system proves that we don't have the proper ammo.

Either way I agree it's a big risk. I assume the team that traded for him would in their minds think they're signing him long term. I still feel like the smartest move would be to just see if he hits the FA market unless you are 1000 percent certain you can sign him long term. It still blows my mind that he's 23.

The articles I've seen are expecting it to take four top 100 prospects. That'll pretty much gut anybody's farm system. Of course, the only comparable trade that's anywhere close to recent was Miggy and in the end the Tigers came out firmly on the winning end based on what the prospects ended up doing. I'm not particularly for the trade, but it's definitely something to consider that not all these guys are going to pan out.

The more I think about it, the most logical thing to do is to wait until Soto hits FA. It really doesn't make sense to trade for him right now.

You absolutely, 1000% have to have an agreement in place to extend his contract BEFORE you make a trade for him. Getting a 2 year rental for the price it will take to get him just isn't worth it.

The way I see it, is Soto is a generational talent. How often do you get a chance to have that? If it takes 4 top 100 prospects, so be it. The Rangers can't seem to develop talent anyways. When is the last all-star they've even developed through their own farm system? That could change with CY running things now, but give me the known in Soto 10 times out of 10.

Alex Rodriguez on line one.

I'll pass on a generational talent if we don't have enough around him to win.

You're trading for 2 years of Soto and an exclusive window to convince him Texas is where he wants to be.

That's it.

He just turned down $440 million. He's not going to get locked into anything long-term from the Rangers now or in free agency. It will be a contract structured with multiple opt-outs.

When some of the pitching arrives over the next couple seasons this line up has plenty of firepower to win. A line up with Seager, Semien, Soto, Garcia, Garver, Heim, Lowe, Taveras is pretty damn salty. You don't spend a half a billion on Seager and Semien just to call it good.
Quincey P. Morris

I have to think getting this deal done would take some of that pitching that's supposed to be arriving. I don't think anyone thinks we're good with what we have now, but if you trade away those prospects and then resign Soto, I think there's a valid concern with how you're going to upgrade your pitching.

Priority 1, IMO, is getting Perez extended. If you don't extend him for '23 and '24 getting Soto is meaningless.

If you get Soto... taking Corbin would be huge in reducing the asking price. It also gives you a #4/5 Innings guy who could benefit from a change-of-scenery.

That makes your OF: Soto-Tavera-Adolis for next 2 yrs with Calhoun (Opt for '23)
Seager and Semien locked down makes almost every SS and 2B prospect available.

Rangers Top Prospects:
#16 Leiter (RHP-22-AA, '23)
#30 Jung (3B-24-AAA, '22)
#56 Duran (IF-23-AAA, '23)
#61 Foscue (2B-23-AA, '23)

#79 Winn (RHP-22-AAA, '22)
#94 Owen White (RHP-22-AA, '23)

@7 Dustin Harris (LF-22-AA, '23)
@8 Josh Smith (SS/3B-24, MLB)

That makes Duran and Foscue open for discussion.

If you have:
Perez, Gray, Dunning, Corbin for next 2 years.

Slot in Leiter/Rocker/Other

Open up one of Ragans/Winn/White/Otto/others

It won't happen, but if you did... you'd enter your playoff potential this season and when you lose Soto after '24, you should still have plenty of talent on the way.

In unrelated news, I'd like to ask a huge favor of everyone here...

My wife is a middle school band director, and with school starting back up soon, she is looking for donations that would help get the school year off to a great start for her kiddos. She is very passionate about music education, and middle school is such a crucial time for the development of young students, so it is very important that she be able to provide the best possible experience.

If you do feel obliged to help out, the link to her Amazon wish list is below. And if you do decide to purchase something, please comment or send me a direct message so I can personally thank you!

Seriously?! You want me to take that list seriously for a Band Director when the only music related item is stickers with musical notes?!

Having said that... items ordered.

Music related items are expensive and generally in the program budget. These are other little things are typically on the teacher's dime

Pretty painful to watch Jose Trevino in the ASG mic'd up and getting ask why he took off in NY.

Might have wasted some trade value but I'll still take Heim over Trevino because of his bat. Plus he has an extra year of team control. Still irks me to see so many former Rangers on their team though, I agree.

Soto.... put together a small package like Jung or Smith, add in Foscue... then give them a cheap replacement in Adolis. Keep in mind there are a bunch of teams arent even going to try after the $440 turn down....thats not much to give up for 2+ yrs of Soto. If they get a better offer so be it!
hawk1689
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I think you guys are way undervaluing the package for Soto. They have 2+ years of team control. They don't need to move him. If we could pull it off, it might be something like Jack Leiter, Jung, Winn, Duran, and Nate Lowe.

You're overvaluing it; if that's what they demand they're going to get nothing for him when he walks.

I didn't want to get involved until I heard Corbin was being moved with him. We should be able to put together a worthy package that will not set us back from competing soon.
Mr Gigem
How long do you want to ignore this user?

I don't like the idea of moving Adolis. We'd be going after Soto to fill the last OF spot. Giving up Adolis would be counterproductive
