Soto is clearly less interested in $$ than winning, which is admirable in a way. He knows that he's going to get a huge payday, why not get it from a contender as opposed to a struggling team that is up for sale.

Would be great to have him, but I doubt we'll be contenders (for his next contract I mean...I think we'll be a contending team but I doubt he takes that chance)

I wouldn't say he's less interested in money. Scott Boras is his agent after all. The total value is huge, but it's less than $30 mill per year while 15 guys are already making more on a per season basis. And with how salaries are escalating, we're probably not far from $40 mill per season being the new $30. I have a feeling they think they can still get him $400 mill for closer to 10 years.

I think he and Boras both believe he can find a winner AND get more money
He has 2 Arb years left.

Let's say .310, 25HRs You'd be happy if you get 10 yrs of that type production.

For the Rangers, I just don't know if $29M/yr is the best money spent for a LF/RF.

Now consider:
Hearn: 13GS, 5.78 ERA, 67.0 IP, 5IP/GS
Otto: 12GS, 5.50 ERA, 55.2 IP, 4.2IP/GS

Extend Perez.
Sign an upgrade that gets you about - 4.50/6IP
Replace one of those with Winn, Ragans, Leiter, Howard, Other or platoon those guys.

Getting 6IP also reduces your Bullpen usage by 30 Appearances @ 1.0 IP.

Fix those 2 rotation spots with Sub 4.50 Innings guys and we're competing for the Division.

I'm predicting that Woodward won't be the Rangers manager when this team makes the playoffs again. I think he's been a good fit during a teardown/rebuild, but his in-game decisions aren't sound enough to go to the next level IMO.

If this team makes some serious off-season acquisitions and still under-performs, he'll be gone before the end of '23.

Woodward is Bo Porter. He's the steward through the down years. He'll be canned as soon as the team is what management wants it to be.

Leiter perfect in the futures game, pitching a 1,2,3 4th inning. Dustin Harris also had an rbi single.

We need a teacher though. We need someone who can get them to not make stupid ass mistakes and commit a billion errors.

So looks like Soto is hitting the trade market. Would imagine any team trading for him would have to know a long-term deal would be agreed upon? Would love to have him, as he's, in my opinion, one of if not the best young player in the game and we need a corner OF. Wonder what CY and JD think and if they'll throw the Rangers hat in the talks.

I think it's highly likely the Nats will allow him to talk to anyone they agree in principle to before the trade gets done. And I think it will take $500 mill for 15 years or $400 for 10-12.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I saw where Soto isn't an unrestricted FA until '25. If that's true, the Nationals are going to demand a ridiculously steep price for him.

No way I would trade for Soto unless a deal was in place to extend him, because the amount of prospects you'd have to give away to trade for him aren't worth the two years you'd get on the current deal.

Again, I'm basing this on reading where he's arb eligible the next two seasons and a UFA in '25.

Chances that Jones or Holliday slip to 3 in the draft? Highly doubt it but you never know.

According to COTS, he is an Arb3 in 2023 and an Arb4 in 2024.

I think they call that a Super2?!

He is making $17M this year.

You'd have 2.5 years of control at an agreed upon price. A team could just take him and let him go... or trade him after 1.5 years.

We'll see what kind of trade market materializes for him.

When you have the Orioles making decisions... there is always a chance.

Holliday should be based on mocks I've seen. Johnson seems to be a trendy pick for The O's.

I don't see how this would make sense except for a handful of teams. You'd have to trade away a substantial number of prospects, and really good ones, which would set your farm system back. Even if you trade him after 1.5 years, you won't get the same return because (obviously) there's less time left on his contract.

Not saying it doesn't make sense for anybody, but that trade doesn't make sense for the Rangers. Unless they can agree to an extension in advance, we're not ready to make that trade IMO.

I agree. A year and a half of Soto doesn't get you Soto at a point when you're really competing. I'd love to have him, but it would require trading away all your young talent and then not having the ability to replace it through free agency due to having almost $1 billion tied up in three players.

Someone will pay what he's asking, but man, I'd rather go get 3 or 4 really solid players / pitchers with a 5-7 year window then put it all into one player over a longer timeframe. Seems like you'd get better value doing that

Best case scenario for Soto is just throwing all the money you've got at him if he becomes a FA. I feel like most teams probably couldn't afford him because you're leveraging your immediate future plus the next probably 4 years if the asking price is what someone like him would actually demand.

Only makes sense for a team that's got a core of star players under contract for the next couple seasons, and even then you're just making sure the window probably closes when you have to pay the other guys you've got

Agree. Look at Washington right now. Or the Texas Rangers 2001-2003 when ARod could not have been better in hitting .300, bashing 50+ HRs, and playing extremely solid D while the overall team was still bad. Takes the whole cast

The Rangers are paying Seager $3 million more per year in AV than what the Nationals offered Soto. When the dust settles I expect Soto will be a $4-5 million more per year than Seager.

So really not that different.

A team like Tampa or Minn could add Juan Soto.

Tampa has a number of prospects they could offer up. It would make a difference for them this season.

5-12 in their last 17 G.

David Murphy on the radio broadcast was alluding to the idea that the team was "just tired."

I don't buy it. 2-6 in their last 8 G and they were all home games.

If this team is "tired" at the ASB, it doesn't bode well for the rest of the season. We begin the 2nd half with 11 Games on the road. We open @ Miami... and then play the next day in Oakland. That is terrible.

I haven't watched that many games, due to Bally's, but I'm still following and watching about 25%.

We're now poised for the 10th pick in next years draft. We could be in the Top 5 before the Rangers return to Arlington.

Mistake number 1: looking to David Murphy for any actual sports analysis.

I feel less bleak about this season than I do years past but I would be totally fine with another high draft pick for this season. This team is not a playoff team barring a crazy turnaround. They're better but not there yet

The glaring problem with this team is the 4 & 5 starting pitcher positions. We're getting nothing from those two slots, and consequently the bullpen is getting used up. Pretty sure that's what Murphy was alluding to when he said the team was 'tired' - the bullpen is overworked because other than Perez and Gray, we're not getting consistent innings from the starters. Dunning was showing promise but is injured.

Pitching is what this organization needs more than anything. Unfortunately the talent they have isn't MLB ready yet (Leiter, Ragans, White, etc.) If someone doesn't step up and start eating some innings (Howard and Otto, I'm looking at you) this team is going to be in trouble in the back half of the season, because the bullpen can't keep up the workload they're having to bear.
