I wonder if we make a move to get a guy nobody expected us to get. Seems like we never end up getting the guys we expect to trade for. Nobody saw JV, Greinke, Cole, Graveman coming. I wonder who that could be this year. Bryan Reynolds maybe.
Just remembered this post that I posted about a week ago.

Right we should trade based on 2022 performance and compare that to the guys we already have (Chas / Meyers).

I'm just not sure if the upgrade is going to be that meaningful.

But for an elite hitting catcher? Certainly

Any catcher they trade for is going to be a backup. I know you guys really value offense over everything, but maldy is not giving up the starter role.

This narrative seems so false to me

If you get an elite catcher, he's your starter, Maldy is the backup

That is, Urquidy would be overpaying for a rental.

I think the pitching staff would riot if they tried to replace maldy. It's just not going to happen.

I really don't want to go 2 more pages of this today, but if it were me...let them f-cking riot, I don't give a ***** Cry about it, or be an adult getting paid a bunch of money to not give up runs regardless of who is catching.

Wonder what player the Astros are in on whose name hasn't been rumored?
I still wonder why Happ hasn't been more connected to the Astros. He's basically Marwin in terms of his versatility except he OPS .800+ without needing a trash can and he mashes lefties. Signed through next year.

Like I said yesterday, I'd be open to Urquidy, Siri/Jake, Yuli salary and some prospects for Happ, Contreras and a Click relief pitcher project.

Happ lives in Austin in the offseason. I bet he'd be pretty interested in staying post 2023.

Are there any realistic ways we can offload Odorizzi? His salary is prohibitive, so we would probably have to send money along with him. Not sure what kind of return we could get, but I'm sure our front office nerds could find some low level prospect(s) that might have long term value. If we get away with not trading Hunter Brown, you could still trade another starter and call him up to get back to a 5-man rotation until Lance is ready.

If we deal Urquidy, I think we need to keep Odo to help eat innings the rest of the year.

If we keep Urquidy, then I think it's possible we could move Odo to a SP deprived contender for a mid tier set of prospects.

I don't think they would. Our pitchers aren't going to throw shade at Maldy for generally being awful at the plate, so they say nice things about his intangibles and leadership.

But they will also do what's best for the team. If we get Contreras there's no reason why he and Maldy can't work together to instill the same cooperation with our pitchers.

People act like this is going to be a clubhouse nightmare and it really isn't. I like Maldy, but he's generally a black hole in the lineup and defensively he's not elite either.

Are his intangibles somehow reducing an extra 1 ERA to our pitchers above and beyond any catcher in the league? No. It's just that nobody wants to say anything bad about Maldy despite the objectively bad stats

Hey fellas, long time no post...

I am at Jamaica Beach and would like to attempt to take my family of 4 to a game tonight or tomorrow night, but not looking to drop $300 and also not looking to set in the upper deck.

Anyone got any recommendations? I've checked stubhub and tickpick.

I think it really says something that I have heard multiple times that Contreras is looked down on for his game calling...That is not an Astros catcher. If he is traded for I just dont see it being for significant time behind the plate.

Quick Scan of Stubhub shows 134 row 19 on the aisle for $30/each before fees so probably closer to $140 or so

Should be cheaper/easier to get tickets for tonight vs. tomorrow

Gattis was brought to the Astros as a DH in 2015. He played in 153 games that year. 0 at catcher and only 11 in LF. He caught 55 and 49 games respectively in 2016 and 2017.

I think you can't compare the two when it comes to trading for Contreras.

Gattis was what he was a backup catcher (sometimes) and mainly a DH. We don't need a DH.

2015- 0 games at catcher, 11 OF, 136 DH
2016- 55-Catcher, 71 DH
2017- 49 Catcher, 29 DH
2018- 2 Catcher, 110 DH

Brian McCann
2017- 95 Catcher
2018- 62 Catcher

Are you ok with getting more runs from one batter if it lowers your starting/relief ERA ranking by 5-10 spots? You're trying to gain runs by sacrificing runs to the other team. Can't do that against teams like the Yankees.

I can't prove a hypothetical. I am confident in the fact that maldy will start more postseason games than whatever catcher may back him up (batting injury). If I'm wrong, I'll make a donation to Jimbo's charity and post it here.

I'll stop since everyone else is tired of seeing this discussed

Haha, not sure I'd go that far. I wonder if there's a way to automate swing/check calls. Like some sort of censor in the front edge of home plate that can detect whether or not a bat crossed it.

Anything we can automate and take out of umpire hands is great imo.

Agreed. 100% want Odo done if we don't move any starters. Not that I have anything against him but he's be out 7th starter and I don't like him over the back end of our bullpen (Abreu & Seth). Get something for him. Anything.

Not knowing what can happen injury wise it's hard to trade a starter without blustering that in return.

Remember there was a 1 month, maybe a little longer, period that Fiers was the best starter in 2017 and he ate a lot of innings.

I think because the focus on someone who can play "everyday" at 1st or C with some versatility to play LF potentially.

Happ can probably pick up first, but that may be tricky to take over midseason. He's another avg sized player. It helps to have a longer stretch and wingspan over at first.

And he's a 1.5 year guy so the cost is going to be higher than Bell or Contreras most likely.
Farmer1906

True but if you count Brown we have 7 guys to fill a rotation without Odo. And if JV and Framber go down then having Odo won't save our ass in the playoffs.
