Would Forrest Whitley and Pedro Leon get the deal done for Josh Bell?

Is that a fair trade; or what would it take to get it done? I don't hate the trade, especially if we could sign him to a longer deal

That seems too much for a rental

Agreed. Entirely too much.

We shouldn't have to worry about moving Lee, Diaz, Brown, or Leon for Bell or even Contreras.

I have always been a Chas guy. I think he has enough of a body of work at this point that we know what he is, and he's got his prime coming up.

He's very underrated defensively because he's not flashy, but he's 85th percentile in OOA & 94th in OF Jump.

You give that guy 150 starts and he's going to be a 30 HR guy who continues to OPS .750-.800 and plays excellent CF defense. His numbers might drop a bit if he's out of a platoon and sees more RHP, but 70%+ of his career ABs have been against RHP, and that's about in line with the total percentage of RHP in baseball. Dusty hasn't played him to his strenghts. Shocking.

I'll leave you with this: Chas' OPS would put him 9th among MLB CF if he had enough PA to qualify. He makes $700K. He's under team control through 2026.

Chas was severely disadvantaged this year being platooned with Siri as much as he was. Dusty just kept trying to make Siri work and it never let Chas get into a rhythm. Since Brantley's injury this is the most consistent playing time McCormick has gotten all season, and he's thriving.

I think someone already said this but the haul it would take to get Bell AND Contreras combined is likely less than what it would take to get Castillo alone... if that tells you anything.

Anyone have ESPN+ and read the article about Contreras/MLB trade rumors?

Quote:

Willson Contreras
The question about the Chicago Cubs catcher isn't whether he's going to be traded -- that's an inevitability. It's whether his new team keeps him at the position where he has played more than 90% of his games.

Multiple teams, sources said, worry about Contreras -- who is not known for his game-calling acumen -- meshing with a new pitching staff on the fly. The number of teams with World Series aspirations that could use a catching upgrade isn't huge, but the New York Mets and Houston Astros have been in contact with the Cubs about the 30-year-old free agent-to-be, sources said, and the San Francisco Giants are poking around on catching options, too. Other teams could seek Contreras more as a bat with the ability to play catcher rather than acquiring him as a primary backstop.

Regardless if we trade for Bell, he seems like a great option to sign in the offseason. Big impact bat for the next 3/4 years. Plays a position where we don't have anyone ready in the minors. His defense looks to be getting better each year. I think it'd be an ideal fit. On the flip side, Contreras would be a pure 100% rental. We have Lee and Diaz ready to get their shot.

I do wonder if Conteras would be a rental though - doesn't Maldy have a team option next year? Maybe I'm misremembering.

$5mil team option for 2023, since he will play in 90 or more games this season.

Absolutely. I don't think it's Crane's m.o. to really do rentals, he just doesn't have a lot of other options this year in the areas this team needs upgrades. It's going to depend a lot on who we have to give up as part of trade packages because Matijevic is right there, and while personally I think he needs more time to develop before being plugged in full time next year, the FO seems to lean that way.

Taylor Jones and Yanier Diaz are both also in AAA and play into this as well. I know Diaz is primarily seen as a catcher, but he's played 30 games at 1st this season between AA and AAA.

Lots of moving pieces.

You're taking what I said out of context and you know it.

If you won a WS, especially if you didn't give up the future to do it, then you can't rip on one trade that ended up bad long-term without considering the other trades.

Because we wouldn't have won the WS but not for some of the great trades and you can't have ALL great trades.
I really didnt intend to...especially the way some dig their feet in on here. But you did say:

But I look at trades a different way. All I care about is:

1. Did we win the World Series? Yes
2. Did we trade away our future to do it? Obviously not

Dude you're trying so hard to be "right"

We're obviously not arguing about whether giving up a borderline all-star OF for a few innings of RP is a good deal. On its own, it was a terrible deal. We agree on that.

What I'm saying is that in order to make great trades you've got to risk making bad trades and if in the big picture you won a WS without giving up the farm, then your "process" was good even if you had a few like this one.

My biggest need at the trade deadline is another SP/MR so when we get rid of Odo we dont see a drop off, and maybe another pen arm or a decent Bat.

I said I didn't intend to take you out of context I just read what you wrote and quoted the portions I was replying to...

and why do you keep editing your replies? The first one seemed just fine, I read it before you changed it, granted it was just agreeing with me mostly and not calling someone out for "trying so hard"

Well since there are only 2 and not the same then both are unlike the other.

I would say Gilbert fits right in with Astro greats like Bregman, Altuve, Biggio, Wagner, & Wynn.

speaking of Kris Bryant...oh, the Rockies...

gave this guy a 7-year $180 MM deal --- played in 36 games so far this season.

it's amazing how much money all the ex-Cubs have made from their 2016 championship

If I'm Trout, I wouldn't be in any rush to return. He needs to sit out the rest of the year, get healthy, and demand a trade.

This is why I would super hesitant in ANY sport to pay a huge contract to someone because most of the time it seems like as soon as they get paid, they get hurt and want to sit out.

He actually has a no-trade clause. If the Angels want to blow it up, then they have to have him agree to any deal. That could limit suiters for him.

True, but I don't think it makes any sense for them to keep him and waste his prime on a last place squad. I'm guessing a team on his list could come up with a package good enough to speed up their rebuild.

But all that is assuming the Angels are making decisions based on winning baseball games. If their main objective is to sell tickets, then they should Trout and the rest of the AL West should be thankful to be in the same division as them.
